155 THE KORlTOfG OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, JULY i8, 190o. 1VHAT DR. J. V.,IJ3E SAYS OF THE j METHODIST CHURCH. It Has Always Been on the Frontier and Has Followed Precepts of Its Founder. Dr. James "Lee. of St- Louis, the leading speaker at the Methodist con gress last night, spoke on the union ot tb,e church and science. He said he noted with pleasure the growing ten dency in the latter days of Methodist ministers to follow the scientific re search of tb time. "It will result," he said, "in the knowledge that the most advanced sci entific researches will conform exactly to the oldest tenets in their beliefs, and from it will grow out an evange listic movement such as the world has never known." Dr Lee, in his formal address, went rather deeply into philosophy to bring out this statement the more clearly. And after finishing his paper he touched on a theme which has been proved to be the keynote of the pres ent congress. "The Methodist Church," he remark ed, "has civilized America. It has been always on the frontier and has followed the precepts of its founder In going into the lives of the simple. It has civilized this country and It has even civilized the theology of It, It has taken the harshness from Calvin Ism and has always led in humanizing movements." Dr. Lee also made a plea for the now rapidly disappearing habit among Methodists to express their feelings by "shouting" in the midst of service. He spoke of It as an inspiring thing and one of the old practices which should be held to. not as a tradition, but as an Inspiration. The meeting last night was entirely given up to Dr. Lee. -The morning was taken up with matters of education, particularly In connection with the Methodist Church. JN . Gillian, of Idaho, was the leading speaker, and a paper by Rev. R. P. Smith, chancellor of the Montana "Wesleyan University, was read by Rev. TV. W..Van Orsdal.
