THE ttO&snXG .ORjaONIAN, fMpAX,, FEBRUABY 24, 1905. IS BOOM IN IRON TRADE Orders Are Accumulating and , Prices Advancing, AN INCREASE IN RAIL BUYING Big Merger of Southern Companies Ik Contemplated Small Ton nage of Foreign Steel Is Taken. CLEVELAND, O., Feb. 23. The Iron Trade Review this week says: Conferences of representatives of lour Important South ern companies are being held in New York this week with a view of effecting their consolidation. Sales of basic iron to leading eteel rtcrests during the week aggregated 80, 000 tons. Unfilled orders on the books or the Eastern Furnace Association amount to nearly 350,000 tons. A rittsburg Interest has purchased 22,000 tons of North ern Virginia and Southern foundry iron for Mcond and third quarter deliveries. Ton nage taken at valley furnaces was placed at $15.75 to $15.85 furnace for No. 2. The Southern Iron was placed at $13.50; Birm ingham and Virginia Iron at $14.30 fur nace. An Ohio Valley steel interest pur chased 6000 tons of Bessemer for April and May delivery at $15.50 valley furnace, und the Steel Corporation Is iegotlatlng- for 30.000 tons of Bessemer for prompt ship ment, although delivery on the recent pur chase of 25,000 tons has not been entirely completed. The Southern market has been strength ened by recent sales, and several large fur nace interests have made advances of 25 to 60 cents a ton. Rail orders have been heavy. Wisconsin lines have taken 30,000, Rock Island 50,000, and two Western roads CQ.000 in the steel raarkot. Pressure is be ing brought for larger shipments of billets and bars. In the East a small tonnage of foreign steel has been taken. Steel for prompt shipment Is now held at a premium of $4, while for second-band delivery an advance of $2 is asked. Plates and structural shapes have been advanced $2, restoring the prices prevailing prior to Ibe reductions made last Septem ber. Shafting has been advanced two points and an early advance of $2 on steel bars Is looked for. Iron bars are easier in the West and are offered at a decline of $2 a ton. Advances In blue annealed and galvan ized sheets, wire products and merchant pipe have been made this month, and ad vances in black sheets and tin plate are expected by the trade. PORTLAND MARKETS. (Special.)-Reports .have .gone out that one of the principal hop- growcra of this vicinity, who has been holding for a better price, has sold, and also that the break among the holders will be followed by others selling at the present low prices. Such report Ib certainly not well founded", and the holders here are Just as firm as ever they were. The sale of 50 bales by one holder, out of about 200 bales, was made simply to clear up all obligations and enable the holder to stand off the market indefinitely on the re mainder of the holding. These 50 bales brought 26 cents, or 5 cent less than could have been secured at one time. There are no stronger holders in the Mate than are to be found in this county. None of them Is In condition to be pressed by alarmed creditors and all can afford to hold until July or August without inconvenience It Is safe to ray they will get better prices than' have yet been offered or their hops will not go into beer. Reaction Occurs Later, but Strength of Union Pacific Sustains Active List. NEW YORK. Feb. 23. There was Tlolent speculative activity and excitement in stocks again today and some very feverieh price movements. The surmises to explain the movements were so perplexed as to unsettle the market for a time, but its resisting power was Impressive and the price level was not' much Impaired. This was the case In the railroad list at large, where profit-taking on an enormous scale and uneasiness aroused by the sensational movement in the specialties Induced the selling to outweigh the buying. The Southern Iron group was again the ten- cational feature, and it was during the most lolent ebullitions in those etocks that the general list was most Inclined to sell oft. Another advance in ITnion Pacific was the most effective sustaining influence, but that Ftock also was unfavorably affe'eted at times by the rocket-like flights of the Iron stocks. Union Pacific recovered all on its 2 per cent dividend, -which came oft today, and allowing for that made a new high record. St. Paul was most Immediately In sympathy with It, although the Southwest were helped to some extent. The buoyancy of the Southern iron stocks caused the advance in the Southern railroad group, but was of no .assistance oth erwise to price". Rumors and assertions as to the stage reached In the attempt to effect a merger of the Southern Iron stocks were various and many of them conflicting. The convulsive movements in those stocks, reaching many points between transaction, were of a kind which are usually made only under distress and extreme necessity, such as are caused by a corner with an uncovered short Interest. The extreme advances over Tuesday's prices bown by these stocks during the day will tell the story. In Slosa-Sheffleld Steel this was 16H. Sloss-Sheffleld Sleel preferred 16. Tennessee Coal 11?. Republic Steer 3J4 and Republic Steel preferred 7. An additional fac tor In the Influence which these movements had upon sentiment was ,tha jump of 194 in International Power, a stock which is held In memory on account of a sensational episode on the Stock Exchange a number of years ago. and which is affiliated to the present move ment in th) Southern iron stocks by the iden tity of some of the active factors in the movement. The existence of a syndicate or organization designed to merge the iron properties was the undisputed fact developed out of today's events. As to the achievement of control of the properties affected or as to the terms of fered for securing that object, the reports wern hopelessly confused. The rumors of peace which lifted prices abroad yesterday .during the holiday here helped the early advance, but this Influence shifted to the side of reaction during the day. when the lialance of opinion shitted in favor of the continuance of the war. The failure. to reduce the official discount rate of the Bank of England and a hardening in the private rate for discounts In London were dis appointing. Engagements of gold for South America, although small, are given additional Importance since the current movement is shifting In favor of the Interior. Call money went to 3 per cent late in the day. This Is supposed to be due In part to preparation for the payment of subscriptions to the Southern Pacific bond Issue, which are to be paid in three dally installments of $25,000,000, the first payment to be made on Monday. The rise In call money and reactions in the iron stocks carried prices .off sharply during the final hour to an average Isvel considerably below Tuesday's, but the final rally on cov crlng of shorts substantially repaired the price level. The closing, however, was un settled and Irregular. Jjonas were Irregular. Total sales (par value). $5,156,000. United States 2s ad vanced i and the new 4s per cent oa call CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Or., Feb. 23. (Special.) A strange case of lack of mental balance was brought to public notice yesterday afternoon. A man rlvlnsr his name aa Eu cene Royer was brought here from Glen dale and given an examination by Dr. A. C. Seejey before the County Court for insanity. About six months ago Royer appeared ; at Glendale and took up his abode in a deserted house, and at the approach of any one hid away In the brushjike a wild animal. At no time, was he known to do any work, and his only food was refuse matter thrown from passing- trains. A scanty supply of ragjjed garments con stituted all his clothing, and his unkempt hair and beard shared their greasy and grimy condition. At the examination here the man ex hibited superior educational attainments and astonishing Intelligence on many sub jects, having evidently traveled widely, but refused to reply when questioned as to his relatives, strange mode of life, neglect of person and former abode. As he Is not In the least violent, a vacant stare at frequent Intervals In his con versation is the most noticeable evidence of his mental derangement. About three "months ago Royer was ex amined before Justice Montgomery at Glendale. but his very intelligent conver sation at thaf.tlme gained for him a re lease. A judgment of insanity was en tered at this time, however, and Royer was taken to Salem last eight for treat meat. Promise to SuiJd Big Plant. ASTORIA. Or.. Feb. 23. (Special.) J. R. Clinton and AV.
