10 the Morning OREGOFiAy, Tuesday, February 14, 1900. KNIGHTS TO GOME Pythian Day Will Be Celebrated at Exposition. COLONEL NERNEY IN TOWN California Officer of Uniform Rank, Knightspf Pythias, Here to Ar range for Visit of Brigade to the Centennial. To make Pythian day at the Lewis and Clark Centennial one to bo remembered for years to come as the most notable Of fraternal gatherings Is the object of the presence in Portland of Colonel Thomas A. Forney, chief of staff of Brigadier General McGlashan, of the California Brigade, Uniform Rank, Knights of Tythias. Colonel Nerney holds the commission of special envoy of the Uniform Bank of California to arrange for the visit of the California brigade to the Exposition. He arrived in Portland early j-eeterday morn ing and already has become a most en thusiastic prophet of success of the Cen tennial, and before he returns to Cali fornia promises to awaken particular In terest in Portland people of the splendid opportunities presented by encouraging the vlHits of various fraternal orders. In an Interview last night Colonel Ker ncy said: "Our interests in California arc identi cal with those of Oregon In the great Exposition you are planning for. Wo feel that wo are one of you, that your interests are ours, that this Is not a Fair simply of Oregon, but that it Is an Expo sition of the whole Pacific Coast, and that it will bo of untold benefit to California. "Wc want it to bo a success, and when I say that I also want to add that we of California know that it will be. "When I left California," continued Colonel Nerney, "the people from one end of tho etate to the other were talk ing of the Centennial and making ar rangements to come here. Many of them could neither afford the time nor money to visit St. Ixiuls. and knowing .that this Exposition will have the best that was to be s?een there they are all turning eyes to the North. 'The Uniform Rank, Knights of Pythias, in California Is third in number of members of the states of the Union. "With 65 companies forming Ave regiments, we are quite a strong organization, and when you take into consideration tho fact that every member will want to bring his family It means a great many people. "At the session of the Grand Lodge of California, which meets nt San Luis Obispo, Cal., In May, I am to report, and from that report final decision as to our coming will be made. "The 'drills of the Uniform Rank are on the military order and California has several companies that are very anxious to compete at the Exposition for prizes, if the directors should offer such." AT THE THEATERS What the Press Agents Say. The Brandt-Baume Success. The new Brandt-Baume Stock Company at the Empire Theater this week In Clyde Fitch's beautiful play, "Lovers' Lane," is a tremendous success. The performance is pronounced to be one of the really big hits of the season. Louise Brandt and Edgar Baume and the entire company received fine ovations upon their appearance at the Sunday opening. It was indeed a demonstration such as is seldom accorded the players of a stock company. The new stock company did itself proud on its opening, and the performance of "Lovers' Lane" is acknowledged by everybody to be as meritorious as the original New York production. "Lovers' Lane" will run the entire week, with a popular-priced matinee Sat urday. Seats are now selling at the Em pire Theater box office, and you'll have to hurry If you wouhl have choice seats. A Minister's Advice. The Rev. William E. Randall said to his congregation Sunday evening In the Cen tral Baptist Church: Head "Quo Vadls?" again. Observe how the virus of greed, Kraft, oppreslon. dis honor, instilled into every cranny of social life. Note the contamination in every de partment of life pleasure, business, public office, literature. Strike out thedate, and write 1005. Strike out Rome, and wrlto tbc word that has graced the poet's song and historian's story Oregon. There is too much likeness; too little contrast. Our advice is to do better than that go to the Columbia and see "Quo Vadls?" the grandest spectacular production of this wonderful drama that has ever been produced on the Pacific Coast. COMING ATTRACTIONS. Great Violinist Coming. Arrangements have been completed with the Norwegian Singing Society of Port land, whereby the celebrated Norwegian violinist, Herr Rudolph Askeland, and tho well-known tenor, Harry Du Ross, late of the Boston Lyric Opera Company, will give a high-class concert in this city in the near future assisted by tho Norwe gian Singing Society and the leading tal ent of Portland. Herr Askeland Is cred ited by the press and public with being the greatest "violinist visiting this country for some years. Mr. Du Ross is one of the leading tenor sollsts of this country and a concert of a high order will be as sured the music-loving public Advance Sale Tomorrow for Hanford. NEW VAUDEVILLE BILLS The Bijou. The Bijou Stock Company opened its new week with a three-act farce called, for .convenience, "The Brazilian "Widow." and described as "screaming." As a mat ter of fact, the play isa new version of "Charlie's Aunt," which should be suf ficient guarantee that It is funny. The lines- are extremely bright and the situ ations could not well be more hilarious. Charles Marlon as Spettegoo, A. R. Tborne as Colonel Francis, A. C. The new bill is replete with attractive features and was received with many .evidences of appreciation. Baby Mandevllle, midget comedienne, is certainly one of the most remarkable child artists ever seen In Portland. She sings and dances and also does acrobatic work. The Grable Thompson trio appear In an artistio musical novelty and are folowed by ilandford and Hart In a comedy sketch. Learin and Cross, acrobats and bal ancers, have an entertaining act. Others who contribute to the entertainment of the patrons are: Zorraotta, Egyp tian knife-thrower; John W. Wood, il lustrated songs, and Holmes and Holmes, sketoh team. The performance concludes with new moving pictures. Grand. The new bill at the Grand is up to gilt edged excellence. Mr. Dooley himself would feel tickled at the Irish humor displayed by Danny Mann and company in presenting the farce, "Mrs. Grogan's Birthday." Mr. Mann is dressed up as an Irish widow, and says that sbe counts time from the day she got married, as she was not living before. Her daughter has a fine singing voice. Robert WIngato J is one of the kings of minstrelsy, and i as a trick bone soloist he is seen at his I best. Alf Bonner's Illustrated song this I week is: "Good Bye. Little Girl, Good ' Bye." The bill also Includes: Hyde and Heath, in "A Load of Hay": the Sldo- , nias, in a comedy wire act; Clem McGee, crayon artist; Boyle ana Lewis, comedy; and the grandlscope in new 111ms. Star. Seen in what appears to be a naze of flashing Arc, Mademoiselle Llska, in her $1000 spectacular novelty act, is one of the wonders of vaudeville. She Is also a great mirror dancer, and seems to be dancing In six places at once, so complete Is the illusion. "The New Minister," as J played by Mack and Elliott. Is one of the ( best and most refreshing -offerings of the season. Tne lorKe-nerbert trio, acro bats, dancers and singers, have an act of superior merit. The bill also includes: Claude Ranf, novelty juggler and wire artist; Daisy Vernon, who is heard in the charming ballad, "If I could Wish, and My Wish Come True"; Howell and Em erson, In a comedy sketch, and the pro jectoscope. in a laughing hit, "The Chick en Thief." The Lyric. "Rio Grande,' a stirring melodrama of the New Mexican frontier, is being of fered bV the Lyric Stock Company this week. The play contains enough thrills to. satisfy .anybody looking for excitement and the comedy with, which It Is liberally tprlnkled Is" funny enough to set an audi ence into roars of laughter. The mem bers of the company handle their various parts splendidly and the piece goes with a swing and dash which is In keeping with its military character. Each of the sensational situations is well developed and the audiences are wrought up to a high pitch of excitement. Thomas TV. Ray's song is pleasingly ren dered, and the vitascope pictures, as usual, prove Interesting. LOCAL MANAGER OF HALLWOOD CASH-REGISTER COMPANY, MR.
