BAIL ORDERS LIGHT Buying by Railroads Not Up toiExpectations. BRIDGE MROhf IN DEMAND - - HarHman Company Will Purchase From 15,000 to 30,000 Tons In creasing Activityinathe Pipe Trade Pig Iron Quiet. NEW YORK. Jan. 5. Interest center in the steel trade in . which there K says the. Iron Age, a shade of disappointment from the standpoint of the mills. The railroads have not come forth as liberally with their orders a,s expected. The Vanderbllt line J placed a total tonnage of 80.000 tone, which is below the estimate. The Cincinnati. Hamilton. &. Dayton Road- has ordered 10,000 tons, which may he Increased to 15.000. The Heading system has placed about 15,000 tons. It turns out that the requirements of the Southern Railway were very much larger than was thought at first. The total amount placed was about 120,000 toss. It Is worthy of note that leading sellers of billets now ask J25" for the 'first ha'Uot this year and. 527 for .-the second six months. The' continued buying by the railroad is observed In rolling stock. Some large orders for steel cars have been given out, and nego tiations for additional lots' are pending. This has led to general activity in' the plate and I structural mills. What may be a. very large transaction is the contract for the bridge -ork for the- Har rlman lines. This calls for a- minimum -of 15.000 tone, but lu ?nay. m be expanded to, a maximum of 25,000 to 30,000 tons. Some good work Is coming upon other quarters. Jn Chi cago, structure fa the dry goods district will require about 25000 ton. It Is noted, however, thai sharp competi tion has again developed on fabrics 'of struct ural, locally, and that the bridge shops are quoting what seem inexplicable price In view of the official figures for shapes ma do by the rolling mills. There has been a great deal of activity in the pipe trade. Tho milla have advanced prices on merchant pipe by lowering dis counts half a point, and have promulgated St. readjustment of discounts on boiler tubes. There has been little doing in pig Iron. The European steel manufacturers, notably the Germans, have again advanced prices on steel, while the rolling mills are making higher prices on shapes and bars. HOP MARKET IMPROVING. Better Inquiry and Firmer Prices In New Tork and Abroad. ONEIDA, N. Y.. Dec 28. (To the Editor.) There has been considerable more, inquiry here In the past few days for hops, with SI cents offered and no business resulting. Cables today from Germany and England report a. firmer and somewhat more active market. Wq have already exported nearly 80,000 balrtf, including exports to -Australia end Can ada, which now -makes us short of our own consumption nearly 50.000 bales. The Coast growers never stood In such a strong position to realise 40 to 30-cerit prices as now, providing they sit down on their goods 14s til -Apr-H-' or May. " - Tbtfre are 1 few dealers In New Tork that are still short of the market at 20c to 25c for March delivery, and some for February delivery. Of course these parties are doing all in their power to weaken values. .How ever, without effect, as prices are gradually firming up all around, and by April you will sec very high prices realized. Dealers in New York City never carried as light stocks at this time of the year as they havo now. However, your Coast dealers now control the hop market and Xew York deal ers .follow their moves. New York City is very -aptly called the hop Junkshop, or by some, the cooling station. E. J. SMITH. PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain. Flour. Feed. Etc. Wheat prices In the East and at San Fran cisco hold up firmly at the late advance, which strengthens the situation here and makes it probable that a fair business can be done with these sections. There was some natural reaction from the cumulation, caused by the fall of Port Arthur and the Northern .Securities decision, and the tone of the discussion, both here and abroad, was much lera hopeful of a prompt peace as the result of the surrender of Genera) Stoes teh Rumors of prospective railroad combinations, and absorptions still attracted attention, but there was less confidence in the universal tendency of there prospective changes to har monize the railroad situation as a whole, and the possibility was canvassed of new rivalries being awakened instead. Some effect was produced on sentiment by a rather censorious discussion of some recent episodes in the marking of bank loans for stock market purposes, which havo come to light in the process of liquidation. The crit icism offered by the New York State Con troller in his annual report of some banking and trust company- methods are given addi tional force by such occurrences. Further engagements of gold for export added to the influence of that factor. Money, however, continued extremely easiy and served aa a safeguard against any pressure upon the stock market. The wheat market op ened Arm with May up- a shade to "-iSUc. at $1.14!iiei-14)4. The cash situation in the Northwest was the principal cause of the early strength. News from Minneapolis was quite bullish, a claim.1 being made that 1,500, 000 buehela of wheat had been ordered taken out of store to go to outside mills. In ad dition it was reported that elevator stocks there yesterday Increased 123,000 bushels. Another bullish influence wax a cablegram from Argentina stating that the wheat yield In Buencs Ayres province was considerably below expectations, and that general rains were interfering with late harvesting. Lower prices at Liverpool, however, had a depress ing effect on the market here. Reports of the excellent condition of wheat In the United States alto gave encouragement to bear trade. The volume of trading was rather small during the flrst part of the day. Later the market became more active and a firmer tone developed. During tho 'last hour of trad ing, however, all of the, advance was lost on proAt-taklng. May closed U6?tC lower at $J14ii.
