y-KyKyy-yiR jagfTw -y v- THE MORNING OREGONI AN, SATURDAY. JUNE 22, 1901. 11 COMMERCIAL . AND The. advancing egy -market apparently ha spent Us forco for the present, for yesterday's j,tiotatlons steadied at"l71ici. There has b.t an apprehension that prices might go -up loo high, but so- far they seem to mark an actuul equilibrium between supply and demand- ttlgh prices have stimulated receipts considerably. Consumption has been contracted somewhat by hot weather and price, and this also makes the market bltuatldn-easler. It was supposed that hen" the present price was reached, eggs would be taken but of storage, but receipts have been suftlclettt to make, this unnecessary. It Is expected thai steady prices and continued warm Heather will cause country merchants to Increase their fshlpmentsCuJ market. Poultry is. perhaps, even more depressed, and drag, with very low pldces. Ducks, geese and tur keys are 'slow of 'sale. Dressed meats exhibit so change. ' Butter continues on an even course, cream ery being Inn and store weak. Warm weath er may caused more firmness, but Immediate advance is not expected. A rlso would stop cold storage and shut out dealers from North ern markets, and probably creato u surplus. Outside orders for cheese are lessening, and th product, Js dull. On account of gradual diminution In supply of strawberries, the fruit Is stiffening'' In urlce. This has taken many by surprise. especially cannerynitjn. Orrguti potatoes are not so scarce u- they were, und are regarded even a. little weak. .Fruit Is In creasing 'in quantity and arlety, and ege tables are abundant. Supply ot fruit from California continues large und In guod mar ket. Clcarlng-lluuac Statement. Clearings. Balances. The wheat market was dull jnsterday, und no Important sales were it-farted. The crrol has been made .somcwhat..jwaker of late by reports of full crops both, in the Northwebt and the world's producing Ufstrlcts, In the "face of the fact that freights ate regarde'd less stiff than they "were. The weakness In the local market was rendered more, prominent yester day by the Katern situation. ' whirr -a. sharp relapse was suffered fronj.jlomcstltf crop re ports and adverse foreign cables. As there are no ships for Immediate loading, buyers are disposed to hold back on the weak market. A fairly authenticated announcement . yesterday that a ship had been engagel "at San Fran clsco loading nt 37 shillings, or thereabout. It true, would make It appear that freights are vtaker. NEtV YORK STOCK MARKET. Dealing: Afrnln Rose Over the Half Million Mark. NEW TORK. June 21. The prospect of a better bank statement tomorrow than has' been expected caused a more cheerful feeling In the stock .xnarket.today. Advances were quit wide In some quarters of tho market, and there was an appreciable Increase In the Interest In tb FINANCIAL NEWS market, the dealings again rising over the half-million mark. The apprehension which have- been, felt regarding the effect of the week's gold exports -wets . alleviated by the publica tion of the preliminary estimates of the cash movement of the week, which showed that sev eral factors had co-operated to offset the outgo of gold. The roost Important of these was a large Influx of cash attracted from the Interior by the harder money rates -here. This move ment has apparently served to offset the drain to the Subtreasury, and left a margin of gains for the banks" of about $1,000,000. The Sub treasury operations, although they Include the payments for alnwst I3.QOO.000 pf gold export ed, showed an actual withdrawal from the market of only $2,201,000. The month's high level of pension payments, the repayments of bonds redeemed under the offer of the Secre tary of the Treasury, and the redemption of checks Issued against deposits of gold !ft San Francisco and Seattle, are the offsetting fac tors. The changes In the loan Item are. of course, problematical. Humors wero rife of the liquida tion of some heavy corporate loans. The com pletion of the subscription payments on the new Pennsylvania stock, which was Issued to reimburse the "company for recent purchases of stocks In other companies, affords means for the liquidation -of tho large loans Incurred, while the purchases were being made. The Pcnnnsylvanla collateral, loans on the Account were slated at over $30,000,000 In the annual report, and this admittedly had been added to since the explicit statement was TOade. today that these' loans had been repaid this week, but no authentic Information could be ob tained on the subject. Motier Market Warn Ennler. The tone ct the money market, was easier today. A new version of tho St. Paul deal had It that the block of 230.000 shares of St. Paul stock recently reported sold to Union Pacific interests were In fact to 'be exchanged for an amount of Union Pacific stock estimated at an equal value, thus furthering the establishment of community of Interest. There was renewod buying by some ot the large speculative op erators, who have been quiescent this wenk. Union Pacific was carried 3 points over last night, and St. Paul, at one lime. 2. although the latter stock reacted. Reports that a work ing agreement had been arranged between Pennsylvania and the Wabash paused the Wa bash securities to jump, the common stock ris ing 1. the preferred 3, and the debenture "B" bonds, 4.' Missouri Pacific also rose 2VS later In the day. Cnnadtnn Pacific rose 1&. followed by lome of Its "subsidiary lines, ap parently" on the hope of a strike settlement. The strength of New York Central seemed to be associated with the dividend meetings of the Vanderbllt companies. People's Gas was marked up over 2 points on the prospect of a contract with the Chicago authorities. Amer ican Linseed preferred rose 4 points on the advance In the price of the product. Local traction stocks were strong, led by Manhattan, nnd Sugar showed a good gain, but without ex planation. Colorado Fuel, selling ex-dlvldend, showed a gain nt one time of 4. but saved only 2 points net gain. There was an unusu ally largo number of low-priced railroad and Industrial stocks, which are not usually active, that rose from liffl points without explanation. The market closed quiet and steady, and with some stocks selling at the top. Amalgamated Copper; during1 the latter part of the day, fully recovered Its declVie. which had extended to lfc. The ipeculntlve railroad bonds were quite generally nctlve and strong. Total sales, par value, $4,185,000 United Stated bonds were all unchanged on the last call. BONDS. U. S. "h. ref. rcg.lOOlilN. TRADE WILL HA.VE TO SAY. Committee to Change New York Ex change Utiles Calls Meeting:. NEW YORK, June 21. The Journal of Com merce says: Tho special committee which has charge of tho preparation of rules of the New York Produce Exchange, with a view of preventing corners, or, at any rate, of making the ma nipulation ot a corner a much more difficult matter than It Is at present, have decided to call a public meeting of tho grain trade be fore jlnally submitting its report. This meet ing is announced for June 25. Its purpose Is to allow the trade to submit suggestions in order that all Interests may be carefully con sidered beforu the new regulations are finally drafted. The plan of those responsible for the current agitation In favor of a change is to increase tho number of grades deliverable upon con tracts by establishing arbitrary differences in prices, so that If the present contract graders are "cornered" buyers may deliver other legit imate grades by paying the difference In price as originally promulgated. These differences are not to represent the actual differences In the usual selling prlco -ot the various grades. They axe, in fact, to represent grades lower tha"h the present contract grade. In this way, it Is argued, the legltlmato buyer, instead of being a-sufferer under the proposed conditions, will be benefited In that he will receive some thing whlchv he can immediately J resell at a profit, if nces"ary. t It Is estlmaled that less than 2 per cent of the entfro exports of grain from this port are official contract grades. -The legitimate use. It in asserted, of the practice-ot trading In future deliveries is to allow shippers .and other dcal eri.Uv -actual .grain, to proi est, themselves and to "hedge" against grain In tranRlt or agaln&t orders that they themselves contract to fill for fttture shipment, it Is a system whereby they can, without delay, secure themselves against 'serious loss as soon as an order Is' taken, or as soon as grain Is purchased which is still In the' Interior and must be transported to a sea port fcr shipment abroad. - Perhaps 76 per crnt of the grain tjiey pur chase or qell and against which lhey desire to "hedge," Is off graue, but the only'wny In which they may protect themselves Is to buy and sell contract grades, whlrh, so far as New York Is concerned, It fortlOed. by about 314,000 bushels, representing tho-' total of the stock of contract grades of wheat; 246,108 bushel's, representing corn nnd 2O7.401 bushels, representing oats. In view of these figure, tho stiiblllty ot tho market to be cornered is apparent. The system proposed Is that wheat and oats, and, with the exception of the hot weather months, corn also, shall he sold on u standard hauls, and that all legitimate grades below that basis shall be deliverable on pay ment of the differences In price. This Is altnnpt Identically the system pursued on the cotton exchange, where contracts are based upon tho price of middling and sellers may deliver above or below middling nt prices arranged period ically by a committee on revlilons. Tho object of the propoied change Is, of course, to Increase tho bu-ilness ot the ex change by rendering It safer to trade In grain. In other words, traders may know that manip ulation Is not the controlling Influence. EASTERN' LIVESTOCK. CHICAGO. June 21. Cattle Receipts, 2500, Including 500 Tcxans.
