XEAV YORK STOCIC MARKET. Animation Canned by an Upvrnrd Spnrt in Union Pnclfle. NEW YORK. Julj Si Some animation was given to the closing dealings in tho stock ma . ket today by the conflicting movements of prices engendered bj the upward spurt in Union Pacific and" the realizing in Sugar. The break In Sugar proved the more effective in its Influence, and the market closed weak at about the low levri of the day. after having ehewn considerable gains in many stocks at an earlier period. The trading was dull and continued entirely in professional hands. The early Strenrth. was reflected to some extent from the foreign stock market, which showed decided relief over the reliable tenor of the news of the safety of the envoys in Pekln. The rmall commitments on the bear fide put out yestcrdav were closed up, helping the rise. A. number of statements of railroad net earn ings for June, published over night, were factors of strength. This was notably true of the Pennsylvania report on account of the extent of terrltorj covered by Its lines, and the exceedingly varied character of its traffic, which makes its statements valued as accurate reflections of the general conditions in the Ta'.road world. The stock of the company advanced 1H under this influence, and the price was -well held. The large net increase shown Xsy the Atchison system did not avail to 'hold the tock. a4 Barttngten. after rising a sharp fraction, fell below last nlsht's. level in real izing, when Its statement appeared. The 2 per cent semiannual dividend en Union Pa cific has been wanted upen with certainty, en account of the authoritative character of the promises ma&e. Tbe dividend actios was immediately fol lowed by large and aggressive bujlng for FINANCIAL NEWS Inside interests, which carried the stock up IS. This strengtawas ineffective la pulling up the rest of the list, in -which the high level of the morning bad been availed of to renew yesterday's realizing movement. Sugar fell abruptly to" 1234. an extreme decline of 4, and American Tobacco Immediately dropped 3 points In sympathy. Metropolitan showed marked, weakness, and the whole list fell to the lowest, Union Pacific yielding a fraction. There was some evidence of a speculative con test between the friends of Union Pacific and Baltimore & Ohio, on account of attempts on the part of the bulls on Union Pacific and bears on Baltimore & Ohio to draw unfavorable comparisons between the price of Union Pa cific, with -dividends declared at the rate of 4 per cent, and Baltimore & Ohio with dividend action yet to be taken. There was a slightly firmer tone to sterling exchange today, in spite of a. shading of Lon don discount rates. The question of gold ex ports this .week remains undecided, with to day's conditions against the probability. The bond market was -firmer today but very dulL Total sales, par value, $9S2,000. The price soon slid off another small fraction to 74c, then reacted -to 75c, which proved-to -be the high mark for the day. Liverpool was d up, but that had no influence, the main factor In the small decline being' the per fect weather in the Northwest, and the comparative weakness at the markets in that section. Scalpers were moderate sellers, but for some time the market held fairly steady at about 75c on a grad ually decreasing amount of trade, the transactions finally growing so insignifi cant hat the pit was almost deserted. Chiefly from this neglect the September price slowly slipped off. to 74c, but below 75c there appeared to be a fair demand, and the price 'was not allowed to remain at that point long, and during the last hour the market "again assumed some de gree of steadiness, helped somewhat by reports of good export engagements at the seaboard. " Trading throughout the session was almost entirely of a local na ture, 6utslde orders being few and far between. September closed at 7475c Corn was fairly steady within narrow limits.
