The discussion between the two candidate" for Congress came off hero on Saturday last if Fny'e part of tlio performance is entitled to be called a discussion. Little Cliiv Lano, ion of old Jo and brother to the Confederate Johnny, attempted a speech, but it was so perfectly puerile, infantile, weak, and maudlin, that it is not worthy of no tice. Fay wan fully up to his reputation an a bar room blackguard, using such choice expletives as "you're a damned liar I" in replying to some one in the audience. Ho is certainly the most con. teuiptiblo squirt ever set up as a candidate for Congress. His brains are nil in his mouth, and consist of gabble, gabble, gabble. His public speeches on the stump, like bis private conversa tion, bespeak his vilo instincts anil base associa tions, lu personal appearauce and mental en dowments, Ncsmith's description hits him exact ly " a cross between a rat-torrier and a ring tailed moukey." His candidacy for this high of fice is an insult to every decent, respectable ninu iu Oregon ; and when such professed Christians as Jo Smith will try to make the people of Or egon vote for such a man, we cortninly conclude that they have gono over to the Devil. Fay's speech amounted to just an hour's slang and per sonal vilification. On the other sido, Mr. Mnllory appears like a gentleman, talks like a sensible man, makes an able, logical, and dignified speech, such a oue as people would expect from a candidate for Con gress. On looking at tlio two gentlemen, and hearing their speeches, a stranger would conclude that Fay was the representative of the " Hlood Tubs" and " I'lttg Uglios" of Baltimore, while Mallory represented the quiet, orderly, sober far mers, mechanics, and business men of Oregon. As far as the speeches were concerned, Mallory literally skinned Fay, and exposed him iu all the hideous dofermity of treason aud secession. SIMON PIKE DEMOCRATS. Mr. Shaw, Warden of the Oregon Peniten tiary, trnusferred tlio convicts from tlio old quarters, at Portluml, lo the new prison, east of Salem, on last Wednesday. We under stand that there are sixty of litem now, of which number fifty eight are Democrats. Only ono thirtieth part of the criminals are Uuinu men. Think of that, voters of Oregon. And then think of the fact, tliut this Democratic party in Oregon, the leaden nf this misnamed Democracy, are encouraging the bushwhackers guerrillas aud murderers of Price's army to cnnie bere and rote you tlonn, and dicla'.e laws to you. If theso leading Democrats succeed in their infamous measures to enrry the eleo lions in this State, there will lie a perfect car nival of crime. Talk about taxes now ! Your taxes are not only low, compared with other States, but your property it protected, as well as it ia pnstihle In prutect it, with so many rcli el desperados in the State. Do you want the Idaho style nf laws and protection? vigilance committees and revolvers instituted in Ore gon ? If you do, turn the Stato over to seces ion Democracy. If the Democrats carry Or egon now, it will become the City of Itcfugc to all the desperadoes of tlio Pacific Coast just as Idaho has beeu, since the Democracy ruled up there' Voters of Oregon, rouse yourselves! and put down the schemes of these men who would put too down tir the Votes of rebels. Turn out, as one man, aud labor uncensingly for the tri umpb of the Union ticket in every coouty. Bring out every L'uiun voter, aud let Democ racy be so completely overwhelmed that it w ill shrink bock in dirgrace from the victorious march of the Union army. Thb Cholera. The City Couticil of Sa lem, and the Marion County Medical Society, met in Joint Convention, at the office of Dr. Bos well, latt Tuesday evening, to take the proper steps to save Salem from tl.e scourge of the Asiatic cholera, during tlie coining summer. We acknowledge the receipt nf an invitation to attend the meeting, but other engagements prevented us from so doing. We hope to be oblo lo present the result of their deliberations at an early day. Marion Coi mtt Democracy. Tom. Ca lon has abandoned the concern and emigrated to Idaho, and their county nominations are go ing begging. Tom. was about the only mau of sense in the whole piie. and the prospect re that Marion County Democracy is about ' played out. Retakes. Nelson Ilaaxbarst, who escaped from jail short lime since, was recaptured near Corvallis last week, and brooght back to bis old quarters at this place. Ed. Statkhman Wo propose, very liriclly, to review mill expose some of tlio misrepresen tations and slanders of the dirty scavenger of tlio Lafayette Cuuritr. of Ihu'lfttli inst, On the third page of the. Courier the following flaming head lines to a lending article may ho found : " 7Vic utf iucslion stilled 'i'ie guilty wretch, Gcorie . Woods, aeknotoleilri that it win cut by llepiiblicant, for a " little fun " He implicate! S. C. Adams! and others in the infamous transaction .'" We admit that (he fellow who posted these brazen falsehoods at the head of his conrso di utrihi', is possessed of no largo amount of brains, ami that ho is A suniup of the dirtiest wuler. In tlio admission ol this latter propo sition, is included onr belief that ho positively know, at the time ho wrolo them, mid the arti cle referred to, that he was writing a dozen falsehoods, and that nearly all the old citizens of Yamhill county would detect him in it, and brand him a fool and a lair. lint he is here to do tlio work of the lunlignant secession vil lains who control tlio action of the Democrat ic (?) party in Yamhill, and aslio receives his whisky money from them, his avocation must be industriously plied. Ilnsice, his attack up on Woods and Adams, Why is this? He cause Adams and Woods have been, and arc, leading Union men of (his county and tlio State. One of them is on the State, and the other on tiie county ticket, for responsible of fices. So far as tlio statements of the Courier may affect the results of the election in this county, our friends abroad, and in adjacent counties. need navo no concern. 1 liese gcntlemon are too well known to be put down br any amount of dirty water the Courier may he alilo to throw through his copper-cased squirt gun, from nnw.'till the fourth day nf Juno. Now, a word about flag matters. Pending the war, on the patriots for the life- of the na tion, copperheads In this county luodo a very bad record, as everybody all over tlio Statu knows. A little baud of cowardly ohivs in June 18G4, near Lafayette, snenked into the dooryard ol a couple ol Indies, whose husbands were away on ullioiul business, in Idaho Ter ritory, and tore down the stars and stripes, in the presenoe of those ladies and their children, contrary to their entreaties to desist, und bora it away to a croek, and threw it in. Ihe ringleader ol the gang was arrested, by order nf Gen. Alvnrd, afterwards made his es cape and fled to his relative, Mr. Newby, nf Mcuiunvillc, lor protect inn: was ultcrwards brought before Gen. Alvord, and " reconstruc ted," by tuking a very stringent oath, prepared by the general, especially for his case. Now, in order to get even, the man Newby, above relerred to, tries lo convict mourners ol the Union party of the heinous oll'enoo, ho and scores of Democrats in Yamhill endorsed in 1804, when they threatened to convnlso the State in fire and blood, if Gen. Alvord did not release this democratic scrub from the clutches of the law. On last Thursday, after Kelly and Woods closed their speeches, Mr. Newby must mount the stand and rend an amilavit of ouo Lrnch. of Lane county, who on being oat echized by Mr. Woods, admitted that he might lie mistaken about Its material suhstnnoe if substance it has Lynch had stited in his affi davit that ho had been informed by snnioliody tnnt woods knew who cut down a ling tn Mo- Miunville, some two or three years ago. John linker, of Mc.Minuville, was then called to the stnnd, by Woods, and made his statement A relation to tlio matter ; said he wits present at the time, and saw it out down, and that Woods and Adams should be exonerated of knowing anything about it. Newby was foiled in his attempt to injare these innocent men. Every good man present nil that occasion went away sutished that Mr. N. had made a con temptible ass nf himself ; that ha had totally failed of his object. A leading Democrat tires ent, contrary to the solicitation of a few of tlio mora demagogical nf Ihe " hreethren," mount ed the rostrum, and proclaimed the failure ; but this untiring ingriitu, N'ewliv, must, like Willow Hedott, " cnntinner." lie has, prolnv lily forgotten that Judgo Woods, whom ho new maligns and pursues so meanly, in Ioj5 large ly assisted in raving him from prison, by sign iug and circulating a petition to Gov, Curry asking him to remit the lino and imprisounieut adjudged by the Circuit Court, and that Dr. .Muuride, Woods lather Ill-law. took the peti tion In the Gnrernor, ami plead with him i:i Newhv s behalf. 1 he (Jnvornor listened, and thus this trndnocr was kept out nf the walls of prison. His ntteneo was n grave one, Hut in etriot keeping with his chivalrio (?) antece dents. He bad taken a poor orphan boy, who had no relatives in Oregon, nt that time, and tied mm to a tree mid whipped hun nearly to ath. Ihese lacU are patent; everybody hero is familiar with them. Oat upon such a villain. We have no doubt that Id prompted Ihe tool of the Courier to do the dirty work of the Join. Hu has charged that Judge Woods said, last 1 hursduy, that the ting was cut down by lie publicans for a little fun." 1 he Judge did nothing ol the kind ; and hundreds nf ihe best citizens of Yamhill know it. Then lion can the foolish fellow be so hnse as tn charge what he knows will rebound with telling eltect. (jood and sensible, men of all parties are nut to be gulled by such malignant lolly : As a clincher to tho facts nbnre slated, m relation to the charges of the Courier, here with please append the affidavit of Mr. Baker 1 his communication is extended tn greater length than was intended at Ihe outset, but its importance is my apology.
