Tub Expedition East op tub Mount ains, Last Monday Lieut, MoCull, with 45 sold iors, left hero fur an expedition through the Indian country east of the Cuaoade Mountains. At the Big Prairio they expect to overtake Mr. 1'cDgrn, who will accompany the expedition for tho purpose of exploring the route for the Ore gon Central Military road through tho unex plored region to the eastern lioiintl.iry of the State. Tlie expedition consists of 66 iuu and about ISO mules and horses, 75 or 80 tif them being paoked with provisions for the men, and and about 25 houd of cattle, which are driven along to supply ,Uie company with beef. Messrs. Henry Owen of this county, Fuller ton, of Douglas, furnished the pack animals, or a portion of them at least, and the lutter has charge of tho train. They expect to go aa far eaat aa Owyhee, or in that vioiuity. and will probably be -gono three mouths. Peugra and Odell, with tho surveying party had previously arrived at Fort Klamuth, and waiting fur the arrival of tho Military before venturing into the hostile Indian country. The exploration up to that point hot been very suc cessful, an excellent route for a wagon road having bean found passing from Diamond Peak in a southeasterly direction over a nearly level country to the north end of the lake. Tho road through the Cascade mountains is in pro cess of construction, aud will be oompletvd this Indian Depredations. We will notice this further in tho next Usuo, and give extracts from the News, ' Gen. Grant. Ulvsaes S. Grant was born at Point Pleasant, Clermont oounty, Ohio, on the 27th nf April, 1822. Entered West Point in 183U. he graduated en the 1st nf July, 184U. aud as brevet seoond lieutenant, was assigned to tho fourth infantry, in which he lirst saw ser vice on tho Kio Grande. At Cuumigo, in Kept., 1846, lie was appoint ed regimental quartermaster ; and gallant and meritorious conduct at Palo Alto, liesaua do la Palma and Monterey, he was promoted to ad jutant. Joining Scott's army at Vera Cruz, he paiticipated with great credit in every battle from that place to tho City of Mexioo, , For his gallnntry nt El Molinni del Key, he was nrevetteu tint lieutenant, Hopt. 8, 1847 ; and on the J 3th, Captain, for t'liapultepeo. 1 In 1852, tho 4th Infuntry was ordered to Oregon, where Lieutenant Grant was soon after promo ted to a Captaincy. Id the following year he resigned his commission, and altor a residence of six years in St. Louis, removed to Galena, Illinois, where he. devoted himself to mercan tile pursuits until the breaking out of the great i. ii; .1 ,otyt 1 v.... T . i reueiiiou oi inui, nuuu uruv. lines appointeu him colonel of tho 21st Illinois Volunteers.with which lie wont into active servioe, in Mis souri. Gun Grant ani thb Girls. The girls fairly carried Gen Grant by storm at the Chi cago fair aud forced him to do what he never did before surrender. A correspondent thus tells the story i Mrs Livermore said to him. "Gen Grant, these girls are dying to kiss you but they don't dare to do it." "Well," said the gallant general, "if they want to kiss mo, why don't they ? No one has offered to since I have been here." Instantly about a hundred fairies poun ced upon him. Ho attempted a retreat, but in vaiu ; he essayed to break through the rosy ranks, without suocess. Then, fur the first time, bo confessed himself vanquished, and calmly awaited the eveut. Never was such a man subjected to such an ordeal. On came the maidens by the squads in lile, or singly ; they hit him on the forehead i pelted him on the nose ; smacked him on the elieek, obiu and neok. There must ho dozens of kisses lying around loose hiduen in the general's whiskers. During his ternblo ordeal, tbe bero of a hun dred battlefields blushed till his fuco became almost purple. At last tho girls were partly appeased in their 'noble rage," and he escaped. nTAt the Congregational Counoil, lately in session in Bostou, lie v. Mr Atkinson of Oregon spoke of the peculiar wants of the Pacific coast. Congregationalism is peculiarly adapt ed to tho people there, and ministers are need ed to preach and gather togother churches. The nuning fever kept sweeping off tho men, and he had been left with only the women and children to preach to. He tried to stop it by preaching against making baste to be rich, but it was of no use, and he had siuuo concluded that mining is just as legitimate. Christian works as farming or fishing, He said the southerners were rapidly moving into Oregon and idano.and tlicrelnro was there so much the more need to establish New England ideas there. The Paciflo ooast needs men to preach the gospel and money to build churches, aud needs them now. riTGen Grant goes in strongly for retrench ment iu the army. lie says that of tho 200, 000 horses nnd mules now in possession nf the army, costing nearly a dollar a day each, 150, 000 to 175,000,must bo sold ut auction, realiz ing for the treasury probable eight or teu mill ions, and carrying great benefits to farmers north and south. The thosanda of men taking cum of lliem will also bo relieved and sent home to aid in developing tlie resources nf the country nnd paying the taxes. The army will be reduced to 100,000 men by the 1st nf Jan uary next, and they may be thinned out after ward. The black troops will mostly be retain ed for garrison purposes iu the Gulf states. The veteran reserve corps and regulars aro tho only white troops that are likely to be kept iu servioe beyond this year. The regulars mar be increased to tho maximum of 40.000 men. A few regiments of cavalry will liavo to he re tained for frontier service, to look after tho In dians. Kossuth. Louis Kossuth, iu the course of a private letter at the 28th May to tho editor of the Trtliunt, incidentally says : - How buppy you must feel hi having been spared to see the triumph of thneu grand prin ciples for which you have been contending all your life ! The stain nf slavery is removed from tho fair escutcheon of your nob In land. The curse is dispelled which clouded the bright prospect of her future. The manner iu which the genius ( f your people carried through tlie democratic priuoiple in its first application to a vast community affords a sore guaranty that, to the benefit nf all humanity, you will know how to consolidate by wisdom and ifioderaliou what you have achieved by bravery and admi rable perseverance. What a Prophkt. Jclf. Davis was a worse prophet than he was a woman. In 1861 4 he said : Year brother States will gladly come Into the Southern Confederacy within sixty dnrs. as we will be your only friends. England will rvcoguize as, and a glorious future is beforo us, Tbe grass will grow in the Northern cities where the navemeuts have been worn by tlie trace of commerce. We will carry war where it is easy to advance, where food fur tlie sword and torch await the armies In the densely pop ulated cities. " XT The rebel Brig. Gen. William II.
