Written for liia Oregon Statesman. APHORISMS ON INSANITY, And the Management and Treatment of the Jmane ; by A. M. Loryca, M. D., Resident Physician of th Oregon Insane Asylum. ' Of the many thousand i!ls that flcHh is heir to," none are more dreaded by the people, or no little understood by a majority of the medical profession ; as those that impair or destroy the intellect, notwithstanding great improve ments in the management and cure of the insane have been introduced into practice in the last twenty-five years. Reason is that which stamps man a superior to all anima ted creation, man is man because he possesses a reasoning brain and when " Th dome of thought i the palace of the lonl," is dethroned, man is deservedly an object of pity, and enti tled to the compassion and charity of his fellow beings. A majority of the people believe that these unfortunates are, as they were formerly, cruelly treated by their " keep ers." that the "maniacs" are chained, manacled and " straight-waisted," that there is much relating to their management and treatment concealed from tho public, that " mad houses are places where lunatics become " bowed and bent, Wax grey, and withering ere t'mir time, And pariah with tlia reed on which they taut." People have also insane are governed by bad passions, that they are deserv ing of no mercy, that they possess no sensibilities, etc., etc. From whatever errors of mankind disordered minds have become so common, imputations applied to these afflicted ones aro generally unjust and untrue. The good feelings pf the insane are often disturbed, seldom destroyed; control over them and over their propensities can, with time, patience and kindness be obtained. If sickness lays open ail the delusions of life, madness often exhibits all human weakness magnified. Improve ment in all cases, and permanent recovery in a largo major ity are obtainable results of proper management and treat ment, directed to the remains of intellect and affection existing in every lunatic. "What is the true asked, but unfrequentlv legal point of view no one iB justified to endeavor in a court of justice to dofine insanity; it is a rock on which many jurists have become lost. A precise, definition of insanity is impossible; he who attempts it, especially as "an expert ' will became the easy prey of a sharp lawyer who can easily dissect and annihilate all definitions however "expert thev mav be. Insanity can be described so that any one will bo able to to form a proper judgment as to tho mental soundness . of an individual. In general terms we may describe insan ity to be a morbid condition of tho imaginative, reflective or observant taculties of the brain. There are many clarifications of insanity, but it is im possible in any goneral and varieties that this most simple and practical classification is into : 1. Mania, or raving madness ; 2. Monomania, or partial madness ; 8. Dementia, or incoherence ; 4. Amentia, or imbecility ; 6. Epileptic, or insanity from epilepsy. These subdivisions ot dcmarkation in many cases is so taint that it is very dir ficult for one to decido uer mania or monomania, dementia or amentia, etc. Frequently a person will be attacked with monomania. ard if the disease is nia, then into dementia, Imbecility and epileptic insanity aro more frequent in children, mania and monomania, in middle life, dementia, in old age. Insanity predominates in males moro than in females, this may appear strango when we consider the uervous impressionability of females, their delicate organization, their four emotions, all being exciting causes of insanity, yet, on the other hand, take the excesses of man, and as an aphorism, we may put litptor as a sot off against love, in the causes of insanity. Female lunatics are more difficult of management and cure, and more dangerous than those of the other sex. It is difficult to snv. predominate, a Buduen intense moral impression of fear, anger or joy, will, in ono person, produce insanity, whilo on another simnlv act on tho idivsical functions, turn the lmir i whito in a low hours. living, all exercise an ity. lie who studies applies himselt intensely to tho oiitammcnt ot knowledge. frequently at tho very iously striven to enter, mind so burdened that, like tho fair penitent, he prays : " Turn not to t'louirht, mr brain, hut let ma II nd Pome unfritiiit'd shade, there lay nie down. And let forgetful ditllne steal upon me. To (often aud assuage tbia pain of thinking," and only find the "unfrequented shade" in the walls of an asylum ; as also tho excesses, which tempt sordid speculator, the by anticipations rarely realized, disappointed ambition ottenuod prulo and hum hied vanity, unite in producing fearful list of insane in the world. Why are there so many insano porsona on this coast There exists, on this ing ambitions, more want of rest, both of the mental and physical energies, more buniiliatinir disap pointments, more worldly grandeur flows, " whose tide leads on to rum or wealth, than in any other part ot the civilized world.
