3TI)c Oregon gVrgiis. W.l.Adstnf, Sdltor. oixoow CITY I 8ATl7KP.tr, AUGUST 18, 18G0. Republican Nomination. For President, A Bit A II AM LINCOLN, Of ILLINOIS. For Vict President, 1IANXIHAL II AMI, IN', or MAINE. For I'lttidtnlial Eltclurt, T.J. Devaa, B. i, Vtnot, W. JL Wmiml Tn Vrs-laU Democrat. TIkto aro io Oregon ut least tliret tliou tml rotor culli'iif tlicmiclveJ Democrat nd hitherto acting aa inch, who regard la f err u au eril, which tlic Oeueml Gov eraiucnt ii not, and ought not to Ik, re quired to protect and extern, Tlicy deem it a local Irntitution, depending for id ex istence ac-lclj upon the legislation of the place where it Ii permitted, and if the hutua were distinctly presented to them, itrippcd of Its Democratic surrounding, of its ex tension or prohibition In free territory, they would, with He ury Clay, declare " that I; no art on their part should it go beyond ita present limits." To all inch, we thin it must now be plain, by the action of the Democratic party, that they are required to tuko a definite ioitiou upon this ques tion. The real issue before this nation tho one suggested: Shall the potrer of the General Government be employed to pro tect unJ vjiholJ ilavtry in the Terrilorittf The Republican parly says it shall nut the leaders, the controlling influence, of the Democratic parly insist that it shall, am the actuul, true fi jjlit in the great campaign now upon us, comes directly to this point, uud to no other. There may be sido is sues occtinyiug tho attention of small fac tion, but after all the only vital ipie.it ion it that which we have stated, and we car ticstly urge upon tho attention of ull such as we address in this article, tho duty of putting themselves in such a position as to bo cnubled to give effect to their honest Kculimeiits. It will not now do to talk ubout having tho mutter to tiiu people of the Territories, for if lircckiuridgo be elect ed, that privilege is foreclosed, and his Ad nvnistrution, like Iliichanan's in the Lc coinpton affuir, will liu so conducted as to force slavery everywhere in spite of tho people. There is but one mode left one only hnpo fur thoso of any party who lie lievo that slavery is not curried by the Constitution everywhere, oud those men professing this belief, who, becuuso they were born Democrats, ' or hnro belonged to that party, voto cither for Dreckiuridge, or, following a rain shudow, support the forlorn hopes of Douglas, even supposing his doctrines to bo correct in tho obstruct, while they are idle and iueffcctusl to save us now such men art) as ccrtuiuly procurer)- as is Ynncey or Davis, or even the smallest and mcnucst of all tho Northern rccrvuuts who obey them, Jo Lane. When a dwelling is in Humes, men do not stand by uud suy let the tcunntri put out the fire, if a mujority of them want the building saved, but every one feels it a duty, so fur us ho has power, to arrest tho conflngra lion; especially would this be so if tho in- cemlinry hd contrived to make its occu pants tho subjects of his will and wicked ness. Tho only furnestar(Tort on tho part of every good citizen would be to stop tho mischief, by prohibiting its further exten sion. Now then there is imminent danger to tho peaco and safety nud freedom or the country, growing out of tho sectional schemes of the democracy for the extension of slavery j as Free Si ute Democrats you know this nud are opposed to it. You canuot support Ilreekeuridgo and Lane be cause you are convinced that they arc pledged to carry out tho plans of those who would sacrifice every other national Interest to iucrense the power of the Slave States that they are bound hand and foot to the odious system of tyranny which tole rates no freedom or independence, but sac rifices every Northern statesman who dures to believo there is a North, full of great and growing Stntes having some rights. You mutt, therefore, support Douglas or liinculn; bat will your vote for the former in any respect effectually restrain the mad ambition of tho scctioaul demagogues who have made the temple of Democracy a den of political thieves! Can you not more di rectly and surely accomplish tho object of your desires by doing as tens and hundreds of thousands of your brother Democrats have done iu all tho Northern and Wes tern States, who, soeing that modern De mocracy was a mere machine for extending slavery aad crushimg freedom, have repu diated its abomination, and now act ear nestly with the Kc-publicans because that thus only can they with certainty control and subdue tho wicked schemes of iU pres ent leaders, and aid iu bringing back the whole country to pence and quiet? In re gard to ull moral and political errors, there are always three nominal parties those who upnoid them, those who oppose them, and those who, professing disapproval, yet stnnd neutral Tor lack of courage or decis ion In making their opposition effective; but in reality there are only two parties,' of pnoonta aud supporters; and among the Inst are all who do not actively remit the error. J est so at this time k Oregon ; ev 7 roter wSe do not decidedly support the IUpublican candidates, is indirectly but certainly aiding and assisliug D ret kin ridge and I-auelu alt their political Lreies. This the nsult will show, sod if unfurl nately the State shall vote (or theui, while at leust two thirds of its citizen are at heart opposed to them, the fault will lie at the doors of those who wasto and Tool away the privilege they have of putting Oregon among the Free States, of Disking her voice beard in the lood chorus of resistance to sections! disunion, to the tyrauny of the pro-slavery party, and to the violation of le gal and Kj)ular rights. We k to you as to wise men. Juforro yourselves thor oughly, aud act calmly, prudently, and as though it deieiidtd upon your individual vote whether a baso recreant to Northern July 3d; HUMlvIrk' rtlla Home of the Douglus organs eptfur to think that the Alabama mau who was on their ticket here about a week lust month, is still a Douglas man, though he would not run but wanted to itani. In the pa- K-rs Jut received, we find a letter from him defining his portion, from which it stems that if he ever was worthy of tho nomination with Douglus, ho has got bravely over it. How in tho uame of common sen, a party could make such a blunder os to nomiuat so strong su opto nent, we cannot conceive. If the managers can't contrive better than they did iu this inntance, they had Utter dry up and go home and play pins. Tho lelt.r Is dated rights and scutimouU and true popular ov- erclgnty, like Jo Lane, shall bo promoted to a position of which he is utterly unwor thy, or be bnnished out of sight as unfit for influence and office among freemen. The rre-Htsvrry SUwIuiUe la lb !( Ia rialMra, Hie News says we "are mistaken in supposii.g that the Douglas Convention adopted the I'ro Slavery resolution," quot- od by us last week. We were correct j the resolution did puss, and is puhlUhcd in the St. Louis organ of Douglus as part of the platform. We cannot see why tho News seeks to conceal the actuul fact; It is not strange that the friends of Douglas, who wish to secure the support of tliote who are opposed to intervention for the protection of Slavery, should try to muke them believe that he is not I'ro Slavery, but certainly nothing can be gained for any body by so gross misrepresentation as seems to be insisted on, by the conceal ment of tho resolution. If the Douglus Democracy is in fuvor of enforcing re. ttrit limit for Sluvery's sake, by every brunch of the General Government, as the resolution imports, it ought to be known, therefore wo publish it again. Douglas himself, in his letter of acceptance, refers to tho resolution, and snys it " is in perfect harmony with the others." Mr. Wickliffo of Louisiana offered the following, which, he suid, would give IJoiicIiis 4,U in his State lletulred, 1 hut it is in accordance with the Cincinnati I'lutform that during the existenco of Territorial Governments the measure of restriction, whatever it may be, imposed by the Federal Constitution on the power of tho Territorial Legislature over the subject of the domestic relation", as the sumo has lieen or shall hereafter la- finally determined by tho Supreme Court of till) I'niteil Stiilen ulinnlil I II 11 t 111 ft I'll br all irood citizens, and enforced ulil, ei lor mo sausiuclioil ol the cliups who promptness and nhilily by every branch of feel so badly we quote tho following from v oruey's paper, ns it shows that there is as much chance of thoir hopes being retil'xcil ns there is that Lincoln will u.-k i .union of Jo Lmic for daring to run against his tick el. Indeed it looks to us as tlioiiL'h Dontr- us wus doing everything in Ins power to secure Kepiiblicati success us the mo.-t cer tain mode of winning his own victory over the tribes of pro-slavery who have defeat ed bis ambition. He tells tho Yankees among whom he is now traveling, thut the "next President will hail from Illinois bc- " I could not accept the nomination with Mr. Douglas, for the reasons set forth In my letter of drcli-tision, aud for others, which I said In that letter, I would not then impose. I differ entirely with him on the Territorial question, as set forth in my letter to Mr. Iludgius Iu4 full, uud as indicated by my vote on the Senate resolu tions, commonly culled the " Davis resolu tions," which passed the Senate at the last scsnion of Congress. Differing as widely ns we do upon tho nutation ot nopuiur. or summer ftovereicn- tr, and the protection of ulave projM-riy in the Territories, I couM not have accepted the nomination with .Mr. Douglas, on t lie platform presented, without siilijccting inv- self to the Imputation of huviug ubandoned well-matured opinions for the hope or ob taining power aud place. I would nave supposed that these opin ions, publicly expressed, and my declension of tho nomination for the Vice Presidency, would have lieen a sufficient riinrnnU-e that, in selecting from the candidates, I would nt least vote for thoso whose politic al senlimenta conform most nearly to my own. I have always been u Democrat, and adhered with fidelity to the principles ami usages of tho party. The divisions and disruptions ol tun Couventioii at l!nl liuioro should be, and I feel assured are, deplored uud regretted by ull Democrats, iird by none, 1 am sure, more than myslf. According iu sentiment witli the plat form upon which fircckiuriilgo aud Lund have been nominated, I shall, as a mutter of course, yield them my support. try respeclltillv, your obedient ser vant, Dfs. rjrzi'ATiiU-K." froT Some of our despairing locofoeos, like drowning men catching ut straws, pro lend to expect thut Douglas, before the election, will withdraw, ami then the party will come together, as though tho separa tion Involved no principle nud was caused simply by personal matters. Though we think so far a Lincoln's election is eon cerned this step would inako no difference, the General Government, Mr. Pnine of Ohio called for the pre vious iiiustion, when tho resolution was adopted. sW Delusion's advice nt Portland was to run one electoral ticket, if tho Legis- ature would pass an act requiring a record to bi kept of each voter's preference, und then tho electoral voto of the State shall be givon to him who is most preferred." Good idea that, if they can nominate trutiij men, like Delazon and Chapman, who would cast the voto for Lane if Douglas yon,i nliy jos.silile doubt," and nobody sup. poses he is quite so 'deep green' ns to c.v ad twice as many friends. And if the plan is adopted ot nil, why not have it pply to all the candidates, and so run only one ticket? Tuke tho Republican candi dates, all honest good men, and Instruct them by every vote in the State, and no more Conventions will be necessary. Or that won't do, take one from each purtv, say Mr. Dryer, Mr. Bush, and Mr O'Menra, ud then ull will bo satisfied, great expense saved, nnd the voico of tho people fairly expressed and made effectual. Hurrah for Union I Goon foii tiik Gkiimans. In Milwnu- ic, is., there has just been an election stilling in a Republican triumph. The ajonty of the voting population is Ger man, Lut heretofore it has gone Democrat- by over 11000. This timo the entire German voto came to the support of the Lincoln candidates and thev were elected y 01)2 ninj. This is a tremendous change a city whose whole voting population is not over 5500, and is significant ofa splen- 1 voto for long Abe iu November. It next to impossiblo to find a German any of the Western Status who has not rushed into tho Republican ranks. The course of the Democracy and of the Ad ministration in defeating tho Homestead Hill" Free Homes for Free Men" has aroused the whole race to the warmest en thusiasm, nnd they seem determined no longer to support the Slave power. Will not their brethren iu Oregon observe and follow their example. Cool Delusion is hard up. He has read Ins eyes sore iu trying to find some gram nintical Haw or political inconsistency in the Anui s. After all his searching ho ac knowledges that the Aaia-s is 'consistent.' but pretends he has found some bad gram mar in our 'McMiuaville correspondence 1 which he quotes as follows; "The lust that waa tate of Shuck and Smith, Ac." When we saw the above in the 'medium' we took down our file, thinking that possibly mis take in the printer bud escaped the uotice of the proof reader, but instead of 'saw' the word teem was there just as it should have been. This is small matter to notice, but it shows the mendacity and meanness of Delusion in a manner that cannot fail to attract the notice of even a Democrat. Ustnr Law.
