www.hoodrivernews.com Hood River News, Saturday, June 6, 2015 A5 HEART OF HOSPICE ‘It’s amazing what a little butterfly can do’ By CLYDE SANDA On another beautiful spring day at Jackson Park, the Heart of Hospice Foun- dation released butterflies for their 7th Annual Commu- nity Memorial Butterfly Release. The oohs and aahs from over 150 people in attendance were very moving. This year’s May 30 release was one of the best ever. “Warm weather, ca- pacity crowd, and coop- erative butterflies made this day very special,” said Jodi Goatcher, Heart of Hospice Exec- utive Director. “When we’re dealing with weather and butterflies, we never quite know what to expect. But this year, more people than ever commented on how meaningful the entire event was to them. It was a special day, in many ways. “This year we read the names of 190 patients who have passed in our care in the past year,” she said. We also read three more pages of names that were submitted by the local community, including a young girl’s pet lizard. That’s a lot of loss for such a small area. One of our Hospice aides read the name of her own grandfather, who was on HOH service. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Earth Camp comes to Riverside UCC July 13-17 Looking for a summer camp that incorporates art, outdoor activities, music, games and healthy snacks? Sign up for Riverside’s “Earth Camp,” where kids will grow in faith, have fun, and change the world. Riverside Earth Camp is an environmentally focused 5- day experience that inspires kids to make a difference with their own unique approach and gifts to the world. We start each day with gathering music, crafts and skits, then move through four different classrooms, where we use touch, taste, sound, visuals and real-life demonstrations to teach kids an appreciation and respect for this planet that we call home. The program will be based on an earthly story with heavenly meaning — a para- I N ble from the teachings of Jesus. Every day, the kids will be exploring an environ- mental question, such as, “What do seeds need in order to grow?” along with a spiri- tual question, like, “What do I need in order to grow?” Riverside Earth Camp will be held at Riverside Church, 317 State St. Registration is $50 for the week and includes healthy snacks. Grades K-5 (ages 5-11) welcome. To re gister, visit www.riversideucc.com — see “Nurture Your Children” link — and mail to RCC, PO Box 656, Hood River, OR 97031. Extra donations wel- come; scholarships available. Send Vacation Bible School infor mation to tw alk- er@hoodrivernews.com or call 541-386-1234. I always get there early and stay late just so I can visit my families. It’s like a family re- union for me. And I believe it’s good for them also. I have families I’ve seen almost every year at the butterfly re- lease. But it’s always good to reconnect with them again.” We at Heart of Hospice would like to thank the Hood River community for their continued and enthusiastic support of this wonderful and W ORSHIP D IRECTORY ■ BUS I N E S S A T H E “One of my f avorite parts,” said Goatcher, “is when the attendees call out the names of loved ones who have passed that weren’t read by us. You can actually hear the love and sadness in their voices. But the best part is still the release itself,” she said. “From the mo- ment our YoHOHs (Youth Heart of Hos- pice teens from Hood River Valley High School) start passing out the butterflies, you can feel the energy. Everyone holds their butterfly package so carefully, like it’s a part of their loved one. “Then, as we start the countdown, you feel the an- ticipation. On ‘go,’ 150 but- terflies are simultaneously released, and that’s when you hear the oohs and aahs. TUCKER ROAD BAPTIST Pastor Dean E.
