Cathy Blair and Ruth Tsu stand in silence for an hour in the
weekly vigil by Women in Black – the local expression of an
international effort. “We invite other women who share our
values of hope for a more compassionate humankind and
for a world where violence is not considered a solution to
conflict to come and stand with us,” Tsu said. Go to

Lindberg is teaching mosaic work to Bell, an expert painter, and the
two forms are being blended in new murals at Parkdale and Mid
Valley schools, in addition to the one finished last month at the new

On May 5, the community dedicated the Cascade Locks mural,
spearheaded by principal Kim Vogel, who is retiring this year. Kids
work last month on a new mural at Cascade Locks School, done in
conjunction with Arts in Education of the Gorge. It’s now in place
in the entry way adjacent to the playground. “Sherry Holloway, who
runs after school Excel program, spoke to the kids, and asked them
‘what makes Cascade Locks unique,?’ and they came up with the
mural images,” said Shelley Toon Lindberg of the arts program. Stu-
dents worked with artist in residence Allison Bell Fox after school,
and parents and grandparents along with community members got
to come in and help with the mosaic. Lindberg and Fox have col-
laborated on a variety of local murals.

The mission of Outdoor Adventures with Military He-
roes (OAMH) is to provide an opportunity to introduce
wounded combat veterans to the outdoors. Over the
past two years the organization made up largely of
local fire and law enforcement personnel provided

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, local land
owners and others the necessary recourses to pro-
vide outdoor hunting, camping and fishing experiences to wounded veterans from The Gorge.
