www.hoodrivernews.com Hood River News, Saturday, May 9, 2015 A5 THIS WEEK AT HRVHS Don Howell becomes Valley Worship pastor On Sunday, April 26, ex- actly 73 years to the day from the date that the church came into being, Rev. Don Howell was voted unanimously to become the permanent pastor of Valley Worship Center, which was formerly called the Mount Hood Assem- bly of God. He and his wife LaRon- na have been serving the church in an interim ca- pacity since the middle of October last year. Don’s grandparents, Daryl and Marie Green, were char- ter members that helped establish the church on April 26, 1942. Howell grew up in the Hood River Valley and has lived in Hood River Coun- ty all of his life other than his time away to attend Bible College at North- west University, in Kirk- N ELLIE Continued from Page A1 from her hometown of Gre- sham to the family home in Hood River — both sets of grandparents came to the valley in 1880. “It was a very stressful job and very demanding,” she said of her Meier & Frank days, where she worked for 30 years, only punctuated by a two-year stint in the Navy. “The first month up here, I was on vacation. The second month, I was getting, ‘what can I do? My lawn is mowed, the weeds are pulled…’ There was an announcement on the radio saying they needed drivers for Meals on Wheels, and I thought, ‘I have a car, I can drive, I can do that.’” She’s seen a lot of need on her routes, both physical and financial. “It saves the older people who don’t drive anymore. It saves them having to go to the grocery store. “How they can get two meals out of that rinky dink TV dinner meal I bring them I don’t know, but a lot of them do,” she added. “A little money here, a little there, it all helps.” Although Meals on Wheels has been widely advertised, she feels that more people could take advantage of the program. “People just don’t know that it’s available,” she said. “That I don’t understand be- cause it’s certainly been ad- ver tised and mentioned enough. But the Meals on Wheels program could be much bigger. There’s a much bigger need … If we had more drivers, even volunteer occasionally drivers, it would help just that much more.” Besides delivering a hot meal, Meals on Wheels also provides a daily check on re- cipients, who are often elder- ly. And that’s the part that land, Wash. He worked for many years with his fa- ther Phil and his brothers in their family construc- tion business, Howell Construction. During those years, he also served as the Christ- ian Education Director for the Hood River Assem- bly of God, now River of Life Assembly, and for four years served as His- panic Ministries Director. From 1996 to 2010, he served as pastor of Cas- cade Chapel Assembly of God in Cascade Locks, until the church merged with Cascade Locks Bible Fellowship in 2010. The past four years, Howell has served as a bible teacher at River of Life Assembly as well as filling the pulpit for other area pastors. most gratified Hjaltalin dur- ing her tenure with the pro- gram. “It’s satisfaction for the drivers, to see the people and know they’re all right — you worry about them if they don’t open the door,” she said. “Most of them you get to know, not on a cozy per- sonal basis, but a friendly personal basis. They’re part of the family.” These visits are also a re- lief to families, especially those out of town who don’t have daily contact with their loved one. “They know that some- body is checking on them and letting them know, back at the center, that they did or did not answer the door,” she said. “I would be greatly re- lieved, I know that. “But mostly, they meet you at the door and tell you where they want their meal left. They can tell you what time you’re coming better than you can tell them what time you’re coming.” Right now, there are 15 dri- vers — three for each day Monday through Friday — who sometimes get called in for extra shifts if a substi- tute is needed to cover a day. “It’s becoming very de- manding on the drivers that we have,” Hjaltalin added. “I’m sure there are people out there that (think), ‘hey, I can do that, it sounds like a good program.’ It is a good program. It’s a very self-sat- isfying program from the driver’s standpoint, as well as the person who’s receiv- ing it. It’s a very much need- ed program. But very under- stated.” Those wishing to volun- teer for the program should stop by HRVAC, located at 2010 Sterling Drive, off of Brookside Drive, in Hood River, to fill out the appropri- ate paperwork. Proof of dri- ver’s license and insurance is also required. Meals on wheels is part of a Federal program, said See NELLI, Page A10 Vineyard hosts choir, orchestra on May 15 The Columbia Gorge Fel- lowship of Churches are hosting the California Bap- tist University’s Collinswor th School of Music’s University choir and orchestra on May 15, 7 p.m. at Vineyard Christian Fellow- ship, 508 Ninth Street, Hood River.
