Blanche was born Aug. 25, 1923, in B r y s o n C i t y, N. C . , t o Thomas and Haseltine We l c h . S h e attended school at Swain Coun- ty High School and was married t o Wi l l i a m Blanche Cromwell Cookston Cookston in 1940. They resided in Swain County, N.C., until coming to Hood River in 1950. Blanche worked at Dia- mond Fruit in harvest time for 12 years. She liked sewing, cooking, craft work and reading, and was a mem- ber of Odell Baptist Church. After her husband died, Blanche moved to Down Manor in 2000, where she lived 14 years. She was con- sidered “the longest length of residency” there. She was ac- tive as librarian and video li- brarian while there. She loved to play all kinds of cards and bingo with resi- dents on a regular weekly date until she moved to Parkhurst Place in 2014 for more care. Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, William Cromwell Cookston; parents Thomas and Hasel- tine Welch; three sisters: Louise Tabor, Margaret Hig- don and Dess Cogdill, all of Bryson City, N.C.; brother Edward Welch, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and daughter Janice Wallace, of Estacada, Ore. Blanche is survived by eight of her nine children: her sons Howard and Char- lotte Cookston, of Aloha, Ore., Randall and Colleen Cookston, of Prineville, Ore., and Douglas and Diana Cookston, of Hood River; daughters Vivian and Chester Browning, of Gettys- burg, Pa., Jean and Jim Wells, of Hood River, Brenda and Mel Bracken, of Port- land, Ore., Donna and Mike Jones, of Hornbeck, La., and Kathy and Mark Milhauser, of Canby, Ore.; 27 grandchil- dren and numerous great- grandchildren. A service for Blanche is scheduled for 3 p.m. Satur- day, April 11, at Anderson’s Tribute Center. I think some- few weeks ago and one cropped his ears meandered into a Andre super short so he’d nursing home where look mean, but he’s so goofy he made his way around to all and happy all the time, and the residents and got some good cuddles and lovin’ in. But they couldn’t keep him, so here he is with us, and we’re so happy to have him! Andre is excellent on a leash, and likes to dance and sing a bit when he sees you get the leash out, just happy to be getting some fresh air. Andre would love an easy going home, but where he can still get walks in and rides. Andre is current on shots, mi- crochipped and neutered. The adoption fee for Andre is $150.
