www.hoodrivernews.com Hood River News, Saturday, April 11, 2015 L ETTERS Continued from Page A4 future. Kris has a science background which I believe lends to analyzing facts before making decisions. She would be a great asset for all of our children. Debra King Hood River For Reitz Throwing your hat into the public service ring should always be commended. The payouts are time away from your family, dealing with divisive issues in the community and most often no pay for your efforts. So let’s always remember to thank all of our public servants/ volunteers ... a community cannot exist without them! A friend and consistent community volunteer, Chrissy Reitz, is throwing her hat (probably a Pistil) into the ring yet again ... this time for the Position 1 School Board seat. Always with a smile on her face, Chrissy has been a part of many local groups that make our little world a better place. A co-founder and com- mittee member of the Gorge Kids Triathlon, Providence Child Center Foundation Board Member, Westside Elementary School PTO member and vice president and school site council mem- ber, Hood River Warming Shelter volunteer, SMART reader, Wa- terfront Park Adopt-a-plot committee member and New Parent Services of Hood River County advisory board member. We are pretty sure Chrissy doesn’t want a real job (a former nurse be- fore having kids and spending all of her free time volunteering) but is dedicated to working hard at making our community a better place. Isn’t that the kind of person we want making the This Week at HRVHS Monday, April 13 No school for students — teacher inservice/work day Softball vs LaSalle Prep, 5 p.m. @ Westside Elem Festival concert, 7 p.m. @ Bowe Theatre Tuesday, April 14 — First day of the fourth quarter Girls Tennis vs The Dalles, 4 p.m. @ Tsuruta Courts Boys JV Lacrosse vs Centu- ry, 5 p.m. @ Westside Elem Boys Varsity Lacrosse vs Century, 7 p.m. @ HRVHS Field Wednesday, April 15 Aspire Field Trip to Oregon State Univ., 6 am from HRV Girls Golf vs The Dalles, TBD @ Indian Creek GC Thursday, April 16 Boys Tennis vs Hermiston, 4 pm@ Tsuruta Courts Frosh Baseball vs Colum- bia, 4:30 p.m. @Traner JV Field Girls JV Lacrosse vs Cen- tral Catholic, 5 p.m. @ West- side Elem Girls Varsity Lacrosse vs Central Catholic, 7 p.m. @ HRVHS Field Mandatory Cheerleader Parent Meeting, 7 p.m. @ HRVHS Library Fashion Show, 7 p.m. @ Bowe Theatre Friday, April 17 Blossom Invite Track Meet, TBA@HRVHS Student Directed One Act Plays, 7 p.m. @ Bowe Theatre Saturday, April 18 Girls JV Lacrosse vs West- view, 1 p.m. @ HRVHS Field Girls Varsity Lacrosse vs Westview, 3 p.m. @ HRVHS Field EA Project- Youth Poetry Night, 4 p.m. @ Bowe Theatre Student Directed One Act Plays, 6 p.m. @ Bowe Theatre Sadies Dance, 9 p.m. @ HRVHS Sunday, April 19 No Activities Scheduled All games and activities (home and away) can be found at www.HRVHS.com. YOUNG VOICES Girls ask the boys to HRVHS ‘Sadie’ dance By PAYTON RIGERT News intern “The Sadie Hawkins Dance in my khaki pants. There’s nothing better. The girls ask the guys, it’s always a sur- prise,” goes the song by Re- lient K. The Sadie Hawkins Dance has long been a tradition in the United States. It gives girls a chance to be picky and in- vite whoever they want. The first known such event was held on Nov. 9, 1938. Within a year, hundreds of similar events followed suit. By 1952, the event was reportedly cele- brated at 40,000 known venues. It became a woman- empowering rite at high schools and college campuses, and the tradition continues to this day in American culture. Some say that the Sadie Hawkins Dance started from a comic strip called Li’l Abner written by Al Capp. The comic strip designated one day a year when unmarried women could chase bachelors around the town in hopes of catching them for marriage. Unlike the comic strip, the girls at HRVHS won’t be catching guys for marriage; they’re just looking for a nice guy to go to the dance! Some couples celebrate by wearing coordinating outfits Payton Rigert so everyone at the dance can tell they are together or just for fun. This year’s theme is Arabian Nights, but you can wear any costume you want, just so long as you match. Cou- ples have gone as salt and pep- per, Curious Gorge and the Man in the Yellow Hat, and many other ideas. Hood River Valley High School will be celebrating their Sadie Hawkins Dance on April 18 at HRVHS. ■ Editor’s note: Intern Pay- ton Rigert, like lots of her peers, has been working hard and deserves to have some fun. The Oregon Folklife Network pre- sents “Folklife in your com- munity” by Nancy Nusz, Folk- lorist, at the Hood River Li- brary on Tuesday, April 21, be- ginning at 6 p.m. A veteran folklorist, Nancy Nusz was previously the Di- rector of the Oregon Folklife Program, which was part of the Oregon Historical Society until 2009. She is known for her stellar fieldwork, public programming, exhibits, and curriculum development. Since leaving the Oregon Folk- life Program, she has done some contract work for UN- ESCO in Paris, France, and is very excited to be meeting old friends and interviewing new ones in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge region. The presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Hood River County Li- brary District at 541-386-2535. Chrissy likes hugs, good jokes, talking, making friends, kids, wine and throws a mean corn-hole bag. Feel free to approach her if you hear her laugh (cackle) out on the streets. She’s a good egg and will be getting our vote. Matt and Dawn Rankin Hood River Reitz is right Chris Reitz is running for Hood River County School Board Position 1. Chris has been an asset to Hood River County since relocating here with her family in 2002. She has given countless hours to volunteer service in our schools and the greater com- munity. Her resume includes Gorge Kids Triathalon co-founder, Westside Elementary PTO vice-president, Hood River Warming Shelter volunteer, SMART reading volunteer, Waterfront Park Adopt-a-Plot committee member, Westside Elementary Site Council member, New Parent Services Advisory Board member, and Providence Child Center Foundation Board member. This past winter, it was not unusual to find Chris volunteering in her child’s classroom at Westside Elementary after awakening at 4 a.m. for the morning shift at the warming shelter. She is truly an inspiration in her commitment to supporting and improving life in the Gorge for our children and those in need. Chris is a critical thinker. She approaches problems and chal- lenges with an open mind, considering all angles and solutions before making decisions that affect herself and others. She’s an active listener, open to considering opinions and ideas that may be very different from her own. Our schools will continue to thrive only when parents, students, and the greater community feel their voices are heard, nd that every individual can be an in- tegral part of the system. As a member of the Board, Chris hopes to improve communication with the public, increasing awareness of School Board issues throughout the district to fa- W ORSHIP D IRECTORY ASSEMBLIES OF GOD RIVER OF LIFE ASSEMBLY Pastor Terry Abbott 979 Tucker Rd. On Wednesday, my poem about the logging of Hood River Mountain was included in the Letters to the Editor. The origi- nal title was “Hood River Mountain Elegy.” It was changed to “Mountain Elegy” for the paper. I want people to know Hood River Mountain is the place I was talking about. It was one of my favorite hiking trails and now it has been logged. This hike was so beautiful, and so close to town. It will be missed by many people who used to hike there. Venka Payne Hood River Human trafficking bill needed It is shocking that any form of slavery still exists, especially in our country. Senators should be working together to pass a bill that allows survivors of trafficking to make their own re- productive health care decisions. This is not a platform for per- sonal politics. These women and girls should be treated fairly and have the best opportunity to get their lives back on track. They have already been victims; they should not be used as ploys in someone’s ideological agenda.
