Ren Wait is spending several weeks in Eastern Oregon, work ing in the harvest fields. Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Hutchin son and daughters, Cornelia and Myra Adell, visited relatives in Underwood last week. Miss Wretha Hewitt is visiting Miss Marvel Thomas of Palmer, Fred Ferine spent Sunday here, Miss Jennie Olin was pleasant ly surprised Saturday night by a number of her friends. The party was held at the home of the Misses Vanstrom. Games were played and at a late hour delicious refreshments were served. A good time was enjoy ed by all. Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Adams of Underwood visited here recently Miss Esther Coke has been vis iting Mrs. I). W. Chamberlin in Portland. Wm. Kertcher was in Portland last week. Nelson entertained a number of friends at a birth day dinner last Sunday. II. W. Taylor left Friday for Alaska, where he will supenn tend an exten-ive marble quarry for a Portland concern. A sidewalk from the school- house to connect with the new walk is being considered. Mr. and Mrs. A. Hirscheimer of La Crosse, Wis., who have been spending several weeks witn their daughter, Mrs. H. C, Levy, returned to their home last Friday. Mr. Hirscheimer is the president of the Wind River Lumber Co. Mrs. H. S. Adams and d.ugh ter, nazei, oi underwood are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Hutchinson. The telephone company has been replacing a number of poles along the county road. M. S. Smith of Underwood made a short business visit here last week. The new sidewalk is much ap preciated as far as it is laid, but the completion of the construc tion seems to be badly delayed. Mrs. Ethel Coke has been spending a week in Portland. Miss Vera Olin, who has been spending a couple of weeks with friends at La Center and Port land, returned to her home Tues day. The schoolhouse is undergoing its annual cleaning. The Epworth League held a business meeting and "Penny Social" at the home of Mrs. L. W. Collins on Tuesday evening. Miss Vera O'Neil of Hood River is the guest of Rev. and Mrs. II. C. Clark. A. O. Adams was in Hood River last Sunday attending the Hilly Sunday meeting. Mrs. Ernest Pennock enter tained the business meeting of the Ladies' Aid last Thursday. A "Musical Drawing" contest was a feature of the program, and consisted of each lady being given a familiar song and re quested to illustrate it so that it could be guessed by the rest. Will Gibbons and a friend went bear hunting Ihursday morning, but returned Friday afternoon minus a bear and with but a handful of huckleberries. Miss Emma Richardson of Pendleton is the guest of Miss Vernon Shoemaker for a week or so. Mrs. B. E. Wright entertained informally at a bonfire on Mon day evening the crowd of young people who have just returned from camping at "Dippy's Sum mer Retreat." The evening was spent in popping corn and toast ing marshmallows. Later a dainty luncheon was served camp style. G. H. Robbins, who has been in Oregon City looking after his nursery, returned home Satur day. Miss Beatrice Boyce returned Saturday from a visit in Portland. E. W. Sweaney, J. A. Ben nett, Robt. Smith and Mr. Max well leave Monday for a week's fishing at Trout Lake, Wash. The Ladies' Aid social held on the church lawn Tuesday even ing was a decided success. A pleasant evening was spent and a neat sum was realized. Mrs. J. J. Gibbons is visiting friends in Portland. ' BELMONT" Belmont is almost too busy to speak in taking care of its abund ance. Mrs. Wm. Early is visiting friends in Portland. Mr. Terrey is soon to depart for the East to look after busi ness. Mr. Eyer has secured a posi tion in the planer. One of the crowning events of the season occurred in the form of an ice cream social given by the Young People's Bible class in the M. E. church last Wednes day evening. Results $25. E. E. Rugg is making decided improvements by moving, re modeling and adding to his barn. Mrs. L. W. Bishop gave a re ception to her many friends last Wednesday in honor of Mr. Bishop's mother and niece, who are spending the summer months at the Bishop home. A very pleasant time was had.
