Mr. Hill arrived in Hood Klver Frl duy morning and waa accompanied by H. lienson, who waa Hood River's guest of honor for the occasion. In opening the meeting Charles N. Clarke, president of the Commercial Club, first called upon Mr. Benson for a few remarks. The latter respond ed briefly. He expressed bla pleasure at meeting the good roada builders of Hood Klver county and told of bis hope that his gift of $10, (XX) would see such a start made on the con struction of the Columbia Klver road that It would be put Through with out delay. Mr. Hill paid a handsome tribute to Mr. Benson's generosity and term ed him the pioneer good roada phil anthropist In Oregon In that he has set the example In making donations for this laudable purpose. In speaking of the Columbia River road, Mr. Hill said that the benefits which It would bring to this city and valley could hardly be overesti mated. He said that when the road Is first opened It will bring at least I'M) autos to Hood River each day. He also spoke of the tremendous Im . - , ) u COMPANY, portance of such a road from the na tional standpoint. That the road through Central Oregon thus opened up for 1'ortlandera and others to California will have the great ail van tage of being passable every day In the year, while the proposed route of the Pacific Highway through the Willamette Valley will only be pass able 90 days out of tbe entire year, waa emphasized. Tbe Importance of encouraging tbe dweller In tbe country by construct ing good highways over which he can market his products waa brought out by tbe speaker. He alluded to the high character of the farmer In Hood River Valley and said that this county cannot afford to be without good roada. He showed that It Is cheaper to build permanent roada In tbe first place than to pay a large annual cost for tbe maintenance of poor highways. Mi. Hill baa made a number of ex periments la road building on bla place near Maryavllle, Washington, which la not far from Uoldendale, and he Invited Hood River people who are lutcrcsted In roada to make blm a call and benefit from bis ex periments. McCAN, Manager R. F, D, 3 PATRON . MAKESAN APPEAL Kdltor, Hood River News: . Will you kindly allow space for a notice to patrons of Mall Route No. 3? J. E. Mowers, our carrier, baa decided to quit tbe service If bla pay la not forthcoming promptly accord ing to tbe agreement or promise giv en blm when be took charge of the route two years ago. The patrons of the route were to raise f WO a year, $25 to be paid the 10th of each month. F. U. Church, who la trustee of the fund, reports that $106.50 la now due the carrier with no money on hand. It la up' to tbe patrons of tbe route to raise tbe amount at once or the carrier will quit. A great many who put down their names for different amounts bare tailed to pay anything for the past year or two. Good men, too, and well able to pay. Neglect la tbelr only excuse. There are 330 mall boxes on tbe route. Of this number about one-tblrd of tbe owners will refuse to pay anything. To those who will pay I wish to say, send your checks to F. G. Church. It Is not light that the bank should be bothered with small amounts for de posit when one man could present the collections as a whole. Those who failed to pay the com mittees last year should par their for that year and then give for nc. this year, commencing March 10. Promptness In this matter wtll se cure the services of our present effic ient carrier. Otherwise we will do without a carrier or have to suffer the blunders of a new one while breaking In, and whom we will bave to raise money for Just tbe same. No man will cany the route for what there Is In thx government pay. Patko.n of thk Roi tk. A JUMBLED AFFAIR GIVEN AT THE ARNOLD HOME Hospitality ran riot at tbe home of Mr. and Mra. S. W.
