BISHOP EXPERTS REPORT ON WINTER INJURY Tin- tuiiiJtH't of winter Injury of fruit tret-H, wlih-h In beliix Htm I led In the Hood Itlver ViilU'y, hint hIho Ihh'D un lvr lnvcHtlnatlon by the horticulture lata In Wellington (ln( the follow ing report hatt len mailt: "During the pant winter reportn have lee n received by the Vunhlnjf ton State Horticultural Ex perl men t Station of a great many young or chardM that have been more or 1ihh Injured by winterkilling of the young treex. Thin haH not been due In euch cae to exceHMlve cold, but more fre quently tu the treeu being permitted to grow mpldly and finally checked by front. The wood wan not prop erly matured and rliened before the trees went Into winter quartern. In Home catted the temperature In the winter hux tluctuated rapidly from fieveral degrees Ik-Iow freezing to above fret-zing, and UiIh conditio n, working In comtilnatlon with the fall weather, ban produced the wluter killing. "The wlnti-r killing of young trees In iiHiinlly Indicated by dark colored splotches on the bark and sap wood. Itls most common near the tips of the young shoots, but In many cases It Is found In Irregular splotches over the entire tree top and trunk. "Trees thnt hnve been severely winter killed should be severely pruned, cutting away as much as much as possible of the Injured wood and leaving only fresh, clean wood. Improve the process of cultivation and tillage the following season and usually the plants will, to a large extent, overcome the Injury within a year or so. If the trunk of the tree Is severely Injured It can be cut back and permitted to send up the sprout which cau take the place of the origi nal top. In the case of a few lso lated trees In an orchard, the sprout renewing the top may come from be low the union of the scion and the stalk, and In this case It will be nec essary to bud or graft this stalk at the point where It Is desired to have the framework of the trees devel oped. This Is a successful method If carefully practiced and will produce results In less time than could be ac complished by digging out a three-year-old tree and re planting. There Is no treatment In the form of a fer tilizer, or special application, that can be given that will In more bene ficial to the trees than simply good tillage with a go.xl supply of water. In order that the trees may make n full normal growth during the sum mer." RAILROAD GRANTS THE RIGHT OF WAY The last obstacle In the building of the I'ortland-Hood Klver road around shell Hock was re.noved this week when the ). It. & N. Company accepted the right-of-way surveyed by County Surveyor Murray Kay. Only one change was asked by Chief Engineer Boschkeof the railroad and the county court Is prepared to ac quiesce In making this change. County Judge Culbertson, Mr. Kay and W. I,, Clarke returned the last of the week from Portland, where they attended n conference with the rail road otliclals. The only point at which the route of the road must be changed Is at the sibling rock just east of Shell Itock. Here the railroad Insists that the county's road must be constructed above their retaining walls, which were constructed at large expense to hold back the masses of loose rock. This change will en tail an additional expense on the county of about $'MH). The matter has been referred to Superintendent O'lSrlen of the O. V. K. &. N. for final approval. It Is ex pected that this will !' received this week, when the main body of con victs will nt once be brought to Shell Kock and work started.
