The Coming Election The city election to Ik? hek next Tuesday is one whose im portance can hardly be overesti mated. It is proposed to settle tnu-e for all and in the most ex peuitious manner possible the matter of supplying an adequate sai'ilv of pure water for the city. Time and time again this imiortant matter has been de layed. At last it was confident lv expected that this summer would see the bonds sold, the waterworks purchased and the new distributing system in stalled. But a technical flaw in the bond issue blasted this hope t looked as though another sea son would pass before the much needed, practically imperative improvements could be made- It was as the result of much careful deliberation that the city council finally devised the idea of calling a special election for the purpose of increasing the debt limit of the city for the spe cific purpose of buying the water system and of constructing the distributing system through those streets which it is proposed to improve this summer. The $-$0,000 will be issued for this specific purpose. It will make it possible to at once pay for the waterworks with city warrants and the balance will be available to construct the new system in side the fire district. Included in the proposition is the increase of the debt limit for general pur poses from $5000 to $10,000. The city has long been handicapped by the severe restrictions placed upon it in this respect and the in crease of this debt limit is calcu lated to meet more readily the growing needs of the city. Show Them All the Valley Hood River "has the goods." To see Hood River Valley is to appreciate its many splendid ad vantages. To see and under stand these advantages is to tell others of them and to spread the gospel of Hood River. Hood River is glad of the Opportunity to welcome this week the Port land Commercial Club, an organ ization whose membership in duces the most influential citi zens of the Rose City. There has always existed a strong bond be tween Portland and Hood River, a bond which the future is bound to make still stronger. A visit of the kind which is to be made this week to Hood River is one which should, land doultless will, mean much in still further cementing the ties between the two cities by initiating the Portlanders into the beauties, the wonderful produc tiveness and the hospitality to be found in the Hood River Vailey. In July hundreds of Elks from every corner of the United States will be in Portland to attend the national convention. It is always safe to assume that the Elks are representative citizens in the communities from which they hail. Here Hood River will have another opportunity to spread her gospel. Plans are already being made to show the antlered herd this favored valley and to spread the fame of Hood River, if iKssible, still further. Taft's Defense Americans who admire cour age, whatever their political af filiations may be, will applaud President Taft for his courage in making his defense against the attacks of Colonel Roosevelt. That the President did not make lis counter attack until he had leen pressed bejond a limits of endurance, was evident. It wrung President Taft's heart to be com pelled publicly to assail his form er friend. He did it with the ut most regret, but at the same time with the courage of his con viction that he was fighting, not for personalities, but for princi pies. When President Taft hit he hit straight from the shoulder and those who believe that he told the truth and the whole truth will agree that there is little left for Colonel Roosevelt to say. Friends of President Taft have been pleased with the effect which his trank and courageous statement has had. Those who count themselves among the sup porters of President Taft, and the News has made plain its po sition in this matter, feel that the President's frank and fear less statement will win for him a host of admirers from among the ranks of those who cannot approve the demagogic tactics to which Colonel Roosevelt has re sorted during the present cam paign in his effort to secure the Presidency. The Festival Spirit With the opening of the Blos som Festival only two days away. the festival spirit is already man- festing itself. Of necessity the success ot an occasion ot this kind must depend, not entirely upon the efforts of a few, but up on the co-operation of the many. In this respect the committees which have in charge Hood Riv er's first Blossom Festival have been fortunate. They have not asked for much, but all that they have asked for, and more, has been cheerfully given. The most essential part, the giving to all visitors an opportunity to take the auto trip through the valley, has been supplied through the ocal automobile owners, who will see that nobody lacks this opportunity. At the same time the nominal fee charged will give some recompense, Business men have entered heartily into the spirit of the occasion and have done everything possible in the way of contributions and decora tions. The committees have been indefatigible in their efforts. Let the Weather Clerk do his part and the occasion is bound to be a memorable one for Hood River. As was stated in the News last week, Colonel Roosevelt received strong support in Oregon be cause it was commonly under stood that he represented the cause of the Progressives. In this connection it is significant that Roosevelt has never during the present campaign aligned him self positively with this wing of the Republican party, although he has been willing that this in ference should be drawn. Issues between the Progressives and the standpatters were made upon the tariff question and vt Roosevelt has signally failed to make known in a definite manner his policy as concerns this vital point. It is plain that he is perfectly willing to secure the support of the Pro gressives by default. The day of wonders in the med ical profession has evidently only just begun. One of the latest was performed by a French sur geon, who grafted a cornea upon the eye of a blind man, thereby succeeding in partially restoring sight.
