Developing The West 1 he people of the Nest, re trardloss of locality, are united upon one point: they want the natural resources of the West de veloped and people put upon the undeveloped lands. The object of the Public Inds Convention to be held in Denver September 2S-30, is for the purpose of agree ing upon a policy to bring about that result. The future policy of the government in the admin istration of the public domain de ponds upon Congress. The West has the balance of power in Con gress if it can agree upon a pol icy and work unitedly for it re gardless of party political lines, The meeting promises to be the most important ever held in the West NORTHWEST NOTES James J. Hill, Judge Robert S Lovett, Louis W. Hill, Howard Elliott, and other railroad men of prominence throughout the country are expected to attend the sessions of the convention, The lines they represent are pay ing more attention than ever be fore to the Pacific Northwest and what they have to say will be listened to with interest by people of this state. Advices reaching the office of Secretary C. C. Chapman, of the League, indicate there will be a large attendance. Commer cial bodies so far heard from in tend to send big delegations. The fact that the Astoria Cen tennial celebration will be in progress at the same time will undoubtedly add to the atten dance. Believing the women of the state have a direct interest in better roads, the Mothers' Con gress, which is a branch of the national organization, has iden tified itself with the movement and Mrs. George Gerlinger, of Dallas, head of the Good Roads and Rural Schools committee, has taken steps to have the school children aid in the work. Boys are expected to report road conditions to the proper authori ties and if the rising genera tion can be interested in highway improvement, it is thought the future will provide better roads. The Oregon family of commer cial bodies will have a big reun ion August 14, 15, and 16 at As toria, when the annual conven tion of the Oregon Development League will be held. The pro gram, as arranged tentatively, includes a large number of the most prominent publicity men of the country. Notable addresses scheduled that deal with the 'ous phases of community fv 'ding, and a big impetus wi 11 ,,-. 7ven to the development e Jient now so strongly under throughout the state. Oregon may soon have a silk industry. A colony of Italians will settle in Wasco county next month and the immigrants ex pect to raise mulberry trees for silk worms. The newcomers are said to be experienced in this in dustry in their own country and they find on investigation that Oregon is suited to the growth of the industrious worm and the manufacture of its gossamer fibre. Stcrt?tary of the Interior Fisher will visit Oregon next month, inspecting the reclama tion projects under way here. He will learn of conditions pre vailing in resect to forest re serves, vacant government lands and the other matters under his control. He will also visit other Pacific Coast sections and Alas- ka. British Columbia is interested in opening the Columbia River to navigation as far as Ravel stoke, B. C, and then on to Lake Windemere, not far from the source of that stream. Ore gon and Washington are aiding to make the river navigable from its mouth to the Canadian bor der. About two yean ago the people liv ing near Iteil l'.luff, two mlleti north of Stevenson, reported a small crev Ice making Its appearance in the mountain. Thin has widened out in the hint two year from a couple of feet to 2lH) feet, ami In place Ik sever al hundred feet deep. This opening over two aud a half milt and passes beyond the pla':e where the Bridge of the Gods was supposed to have teen located. A hoime located at the bane of the mountain ha been shifted from Its original position In a slow from of locomotion, fences cov ered, sprlbgs that have always given a flow have dried up and new springs in different locations have made their appearance with an abundance of cold mineral water. A small island has made Its appearance fn the i ore ake, growing from a small speck to a space of 20 to SO feet. The general topography of that part of the country Is undergoing a complete change and the Bridge of the iods may become a matter of history Instead of a myth. The rap- Ids are becoming more rugged every year, and It will only be a matter of time when navigation will close at ow water below the locks, unless the channel is blasted out. MOSIER MERCHANTS PLAN ALL-YEAR BOAT LANDING The mtrchunts of Mosier are work ing ou a scheme to get the river boats to build a landing at that point. There Is an excellent place for a dock just west of the railroad sta tion and a crossing has leen granted by the O.-W. 1C. & X. With the river transportation facilities Mosier will enjoy Is-tter service th.in at present d expects to get lower freight rates. When the bowels feel uncomfort able and you miss the exhilarating feeling that always follows a copious morning operation, a dose of II Kllli- INK will set you right In a couple of hours. If taken at bedtime you get ts lieneftclal effect after breakfast next day. Price uUc. Sold by ('has. (larke. Stomach troubles cured. Dr. Sow- erby. Try the Classl fled Column.
