Developing The West
1 he people of the Nest, re
trardloss of locality, are united
upon one point: they want the
natural resources of the West de
veloped and people put upon the
undeveloped lands. The object
of the Public Inds Convention
to be held in Denver September
2S-30, is for the purpose of agree
ing upon a policy to bring about
that result. The future policy
of the government in the admin
istration of the public domain de
ponds upon Congress. The West
has the balance of power in Con
gress if it can agree upon a pol
icy and work unitedly for it re
gardless of party political lines,
The meeting promises to be the
most important ever held in the
West
NORTHWEST NOTES
James J. Hill, Judge Robert S
Lovett, Louis W. Hill, Howard
Elliott, and other railroad men
of prominence throughout the
country are expected to attend
the sessions of the convention,
The lines they represent are pay
ing more attention than ever be
fore to the Pacific Northwest
and what they have to say will
be listened to with interest by
people of this state.
Advices reaching the office
of Secretary C. C. Chapman, of
the League, indicate there will
be a large attendance. Commer
cial bodies so far heard from in
tend to send big delegations.
The fact that the Astoria Cen
tennial celebration will be in
progress at the same time will
undoubtedly add to the atten
dance.
Believing the women of the
state have a direct interest in
better roads, the Mothers' Con
gress, which is a branch of the
national organization, has iden
tified itself with the movement
and Mrs. George Gerlinger, of
Dallas, head of the Good Roads
and Rural Schools committee,
has taken steps to have the
school children aid in the work.
Boys are expected to report road
conditions to the proper authori
ties and if the rising genera
tion can be interested in highway
improvement, it is thought the
future will provide better roads.
The Oregon family of commer
cial bodies will have a big reun
ion August 14, 15, and 16 at As
toria, when the annual conven
tion of the Oregon Development
League will be held. The pro
gram, as arranged tentatively,
includes a large number of the
most prominent publicity men of
the country. Notable addresses
scheduled that deal with the
'ous phases of community
fv 'ding, and a big impetus wi
11
,,-. 7ven to the development
e Jient now so strongly under
throughout the state.
Oregon may soon have a silk
industry. A colony of Italians
will settle in Wasco county next
month and the immigrants ex
pect to raise mulberry trees for
silk worms. The newcomers are
said to be experienced in this in
dustry in their own country and
they find on investigation that
Oregon is suited to the growth
of the industrious worm and the
manufacture of its gossamer
fibre.
Stcrt?tary of the Interior
Fisher will visit Oregon next
month, inspecting the reclama
tion projects under way here.
He will learn of conditions pre
vailing in resect to forest re
serves, vacant government lands
and the other matters under his
control. He will also visit other
Pacific Coast sections and Alas-
ka.
