Protecting the Garden Just what to use to kill the bugs and worms which annoy the gardner of vegetable and sma fruit tracts at this time of year, is told in a new bulletin of the Oregon Agricultural College which will soon be issued from the college press. Plant lice, or aphis, such as the cucumber aphis, cabbage aphis, lettuce aphis, strawberry aphis, rose aphis and others, of ten become very troublesome in the garden on various plants, and some of them are extremely hard to control, says H. F. Wil son, entomologist, who is author of the work. Black Leaf, Black Leaf 40, or Kerosene Emulsion applied at any time when the aphis become troublesome, or before the leaves curl, is effec tive. For worms on cabbage and cauliflower Paris green or arse nate of lead should be used. For cut-worms on onions, a bran ar senate mash or a Paris green dry bait. For the striped cucumber bee tie, the plants should be dusted with Paris green or sprayed with arsenate of lead. It is well to plant some early squash for trap plants, and when the beetles are feeding on them, dust heavily with Paris green. For worms on the leaves of currant bushes, one should spray with arsenate of lead. For fruit worms, destroy the infested fruit and allow the poultry the run of the bushes when the infested fruit is falling. For aphis apply an aphis spray (a black leaf or emulsion) when the berries are just coming out Gooseberries should be given the same treat ment as currants. For plant lice on hops, a thor ough spraying should be given with Black Leaf or Kerosene Emulsion at the time the lice are on the plant, and the treatment may be repeated in June if nec esssary. For aphis on peas the treatment is the same. To get rid of the striped cu cumber beetle on muskmelons, the treatment is the same as on cucumber vines, a heavy strength spray of arsenate of lead when ever the beetles appear, should be effective. Watermelon pests are treated as the muskmelons. When there are cane maggots on the raspberry bushes, the on ly thing to do is to cut out the infested canes and burn them, For aphis and cane hoppers on rose bushes, a Kerosene emul sion or Black Leaf spray should be used whenever they appear; for aphis, the kerosene or Black Leaf spray is good. Strawberry plants infested with crown miners and root borers should be destroyed be fore May 1. For leaf rollers, the tops should be burned as soon as possible after the crop has been gathered. In addition it is well to spray the foliage thor oughly with arsenate of lead about the first of May, and re peat the treatment in about two weeks. For cut-worms a bran arsenic mash or Paris green dry bait should be used. When flea-beetles are found on augar beets, the plants should be sprayed at once with arsenate of lead, and the treatment should be repeated two or three times at intervals of about two weeks or bo. If the beds of violets have red spiders or aphis, Black Leaf or kerosene emulsion should be used. In case one treats for red Bpider with the kerosene, the un der side of the leaf must be jprayed to be effective. THE MERE MAN'S VIEWPOINT A MAN'S MEMORY BYRON WILLIAMS MICHIGAN woman refuses to erect niouument to her husband mem ory ou the ground that he hudu't any. ueu sue gtive him a letter to ninll he luvarl ably forgot It. lie left the back door unlocked and the water faucet open. He forgot to put out the rat and wind the clock. lie failed not only to mntu a piece of dress goods, but he lost RO MEMORY. the sample, and many a time, she says, he stoutly denied ever promising to bring home the meat for dinner or tele phoning the laundrymau to call around and get the soiled linen. In fact, the woman insists, this man had no more memory than professional borrowers of small sums for dire neces' sltles at the club. Ills forgotter was as marked as a horse fly on the crtinl um of a baldheaded man, and his ob stinacy when confronted with the bare facts In the case was most irritating. Because of all this no monument marks the grave of this benedict who has passed on no headpiece against which in spring one might lay fragrant bunches of violets; no footpiece upon which to set the tomato can vase filled with forgetmenots of the wildwood. You, Mr. Man, with that letter in your pocket, take notice of this. Oo through your clothes and make an in vestlgation among the papers and en velopes. Tosslbly there is an epistle worn through at the edges, a letter to Annt Katie asking her to come out and spend a month. If there is and you don't hike down to the postofflce with it there may be no shaft to mark your last resting place in the quiet corner of the country churchyard. It Is queer how forgetful and trying men are at times. I know a man who forgot to register his wife at the ho tel. It was on b I b honeymoon. and to turn it off as a joke be took the pen and wrote, "Me and my wife," paying in advance for a room and leav ing the place at once. I know another man who took his wife to the theater, went out to see a man be tween the acts, went home sober and forgot every blessed word about his better DID MY half ignomlnlously left lK?liiiid until be found the house deserted. The trouble with a man is that be never doos as be is told. If be would obey wifle when she says, "Now, don't you put that letter in your pocket; Just hold it in your hand all the way to town!" he might not forget, unless be did like another friend of mine who boarded the electric car for the city, holding the letter at arm's length and looking at It much like the man of the cartoon who has a dotted line run ning from his eye to the object in question. I smiled when he muttered something about being sure to mall that letter fur Lucille, and then we got to talking about the sewer. We are building one out in our town, or hope to, and this friend Is very anxious to see the work completed. When Urown got on and began to complain about taxes and Improvements and talk graft and corruption In gen eral my friend became excited. Ills excitement terminated in a lengthy and vig orous disserta tion about tight wads and reputa tion wreckers, in the perturbation of which he twisted and tore that letter into a half dozen pieces, dropping the re mains absent mlndedly into the D spittoon. was such a Joke I kept my counsel, but the truth finally leak HOLM NO I.ETTEB AT ARM'0 I t.lOTH. ed out, und I ascertained from his wife that when he came home at night the ol lowing conversation took place: John, did you tuall my letter this lorningi" "Er why, yes, Lucille. I why, I must have." And he thought be was telling the truth. It was not until I owned up to my duplicity In the matter that he was convinced the letter never had gone to Its destination. Forgetful liinn! If it were not for the fact Hint we know his life often ht filled with worries and strenuoslty we should feel like forgetting to pre pare bl dinner now and then Just to cbool hi in, but we know wli.it be hat to contend with, and we try to be tner- lful that Is, you, tha ladles, do and pet along the beat way we ran with out pouting or crow word. 1 you MAIL LXTTIB?" AUTOMOBILE SKIDS ON WET CEMENT A Well-know n Idaho Man's Machine Damaged on Fourth Street Coeur il'Alene, Ida., May LD. (Special ) Some little excitement was caused on Fourth street a few minutes U'fore ti o'clock last evening;, when W. U.
