Protecting the Garden
Just what to use to kill the
bugs and worms which annoy the
gardner of vegetable and sma
fruit tracts at this time of year,
is told in a new bulletin of the
Oregon Agricultural College
which will soon be issued from
the college press.
Plant lice, or aphis, such as
the cucumber aphis, cabbage
aphis, lettuce aphis, strawberry
aphis, rose aphis and others, of
ten become very troublesome in
the garden on various plants,
and some of them are extremely
hard to control, says H. F. Wil
son, entomologist, who is author
of the work. Black Leaf, Black
Leaf 40, or Kerosene Emulsion
applied at any time when the
aphis become troublesome, or
before the leaves curl, is effec
tive.
For worms on cabbage and
cauliflower Paris green or arse
nate of lead should be used. For
cut-worms on onions, a bran ar
senate mash or a Paris green dry
bait.
For the striped cucumber bee
tie, the plants should be dusted
with Paris green or sprayed with
arsenate of lead. It is well to
plant some early squash for trap
plants, and when the beetles are
feeding on them, dust heavily
with Paris green.
For worms on the leaves of
currant bushes, one should spray
with arsenate of lead. For fruit
worms, destroy the infested fruit
and allow the poultry the run of
the bushes when the infested
fruit is falling. For aphis apply
an aphis spray (a black leaf or
emulsion) when the berries are
just coming out Gooseberries
should be given the same treat
ment as currants.
For plant lice on hops, a thor
ough spraying should be given
with Black Leaf or Kerosene
Emulsion at the time the lice are
on the plant, and the treatment
may be repeated in June if nec
esssary. For aphis on peas the
treatment is the same.
To get rid of the striped cu
cumber beetle on muskmelons,
the treatment is the same as on
cucumber vines, a heavy strength
spray of arsenate of lead when
ever the beetles appear, should
be effective. Watermelon pests
are treated as the muskmelons.
When there are cane maggots
on the raspberry bushes, the on
ly thing to do is to cut out the
infested canes and burn them,
For aphis and cane hoppers on
rose bushes, a Kerosene emul
sion or Black Leaf spray should
be used whenever they appear;
for aphis, the kerosene or Black
Leaf spray is good.
Strawberry plants infested
with crown miners and root
borers should be destroyed be
fore May 1. For leaf rollers,
the tops should be burned as soon
as possible after the crop has
been gathered. In addition it is
well to spray the foliage thor
oughly with arsenate of lead
about the first of May, and re
peat the treatment in about two
weeks. For cut-worms a bran
arsenic mash or Paris green dry
bait should be used.
When flea-beetles are found on
augar beets, the plants should be
sprayed at once with arsenate of
lead, and the treatment should
be repeated two or three times
at intervals of about two weeks
or bo.
If the beds of violets have red
spiders or aphis, Black Leaf or
kerosene emulsion should be
used. In case one treats for red
Bpider with the kerosene, the un
der side of the leaf must be
jprayed to be effective.

when W. U. Davidson lost control of
his White automobile while Hearing
the I'oenr d'Alene Avenue corner.
The Ilassam pavement was wet
and the machine skidded badly.
Turning to the left It ran upon the
curb near the Home Klectrle Supply
store.
Mr. Davidson, who was driving:,
was not Injured, and no damage was
done to the car beyond destroying
the rear wheel.
