BIG CELEBRATION AT THE DALLES ON 4TH The committee ' lu charge of the Fourth of July celebration at The Oiille announce a big time. There will be two league, btixebtill game, one Sunday afteruoon and another Monday morning, tctween the team from Hood Klver and the localo. Thene two games will decide the chaiutdoimhip of the Columbia river league nud should be a drawing card as both will be hotly contented. Arrangements are ltelng made for announcing the progress of the Jeffries-Johnson tight by rounds from the grandstand. Monday morning the Fourth will be greeted with the roar of can non. At 11 o'clock the address of the day nud the reading of the Declara tion of Independence will take pluce In the city park. A big automobile parade with at least 75 machines in line Is promised, and a liberal prize has been offered for the most elaborately decorated automobile. At 2 o'clock the firemeu's hose races will take place. Three teams will compete, Hood Itlver, Dufur and The Inlles. There will also be a uumber of foot races. Three bauds, Hood Ulver, The Dalles and Dufur, will furnish the muxic. Two concerts will be given, one In the morning at ID o'clock and the other in the evening at s o'clock. At "J o'clock a grand free ball will le held at the Vogt theatre. Birgfeld's orchestra will furnish the music. URGES APPLE SHIPPERS TO ATTEND CONVENTION A Chicago dlxputch in the Produce News says that W. L. Wagner, presi dent of the Apple Shipper's Ass'n, with his usual energy, Is stirring up the members to keep In mind the nest convention, at Niagara Falls, August 11-5, and to get busy on all association matters and business. In a circular letter of June 11, Presi dent Waguer calls attention to some Important topics for the attention of the members. Some of the Important ones, summarized, are: The newspapers have accomplished much in the way of destroying the demand for apples next fall through their advice to the consuming public that because of frosts In a restricted area, fruit would be scarce and high. They have the grower of the east convinced that there Is no fruit lu the west, and the grower of the west Is sure that there Is no fruit in the east, while the consumer is certain there Is no fruit anywhere. This condition must be overcome. Crop' reports should be made to John . Low, Chicago, chairman of the crop committee. New members are highly desired, and all old memtiers are urged to work to get accessions. J. M. Mc Conch, Huntington, W. Va.. chair man of the committee on grades, wants all the suggestions anyone has to offer. V. H. Balirenburg, New York, likewise Is on the lookout for any one's views relative to short ba rrels. Everybody Is urged to attend the convention and If Mr. Wngner's ef forts are one-fourth rewarded. It will be the l)est convention yet held by the association. MARRIED cautkh-mohtimkk The culmination of a romance of the Hood Klver apple district was solemnized Wednesday afteruoon when Miss Lulu Mortimer and Rob ert Carter were married In the par lors of the Hotel Portland by the Kev. H. M. Hamsey, rector of St. Stephen's church, says the Oregonlan The engagement had beeu anuounced several weeks ago to Hood Klver friends, but the wedding was fixed fur a date In early July. Accompan ied by the bride's mother, the couple came to Portland Wednesday morn ing and preparations for the wed ding were made speedily. Mrs. Carter Is the daughter of Mrs. Doletha Mortimer, of lied wood, Minn., and the bridegroom is the son of Mrs. J. M. Westcott, of Ulchmond, I ml. The ceremony at the Portland was witnessed by Mrs. Mortimer, by the bride's nuut, Mrs. Martha Johnson, of Spring Valley, Minn., Henry Dulla, a boyhood friend of the bridegroom from Ktchmoud, and 11. S. Carter, an easteru theatrical man and brother of the bridegroom. The couple left at midnight for an extend ed tour of Canada and on their re turn will make their home in Hood Klver, where priDr to their marriage each had lived less than a year. Mr. and Mrs. Carter are well known at Hood Klver, the former having been connected with the Stewart Hardware Company for some time and the latter one of the attractive and popular young ladles of the valley. This association Is rep resented In Hood Klver by Dr. M. K. Welch. Improving Valley Christian Church The Valley Christian Church lu the ISarrett district Is being Improved. The church will be raised nud a full basement built under It for Sunday school work and as a meeting place for the ludles' aid society and other organizations connscted with the church. Kev. Isaac Peart, the new pastor, is creating more Interest In church work and the larger quarters are necessary to cure for a larger membership.
