The devices ‘can sustain life-saving circulation during prolonged resuscitation attempts,’ Fire Chief Kurt Donaldson said. Members of the fi re district trained on the devices last month. Donaldson and the fi re district requested funding from Columbia Memorial in December. ‘Ensuring that a chest compression device can be available for all cardiac events occurring in the area was an easy decision,’ said Erik Thorsen, Columbia Memorial’s CEO. The fi rst is a roadside cleanup on Friday, Earth Day. Check-in and refreshments are at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. High- way 101 and Hemlock Street at the north edge of Wheeler. Cleanup begins by 9 a.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but par- ticipants are asked to register at nehalemtrust.org/events. Safety vests, garbage bags and grabbers are provided. Gloves are available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own, and to wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. On Saturday, volunteers are needed to help remove Scotch broom from Elk Meadows Park, located in Bayside Gardens on Neptune Way in Manzanita. Ori- entation begins at 9 a.m., and the work begins by 9:30 a.m. Information and directions are at nehalemtrust.org/events. Preregistration is not required. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather for this event as well. 4-H holds Family Bingo Night The 4-H Association is holding a Family Bingo Night fundraiser on Friday on the third fl oor at the Astoria Elks Lodge, 453 11th St. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with bingo starting at 6:30 p.m. Ten bingo games are $10 per per- son or $30 per family. There are prizes for bingo, as well as basket drawings (tickets cost $1 each). Light snacks will be available. The proceeds will help fund the 4-H program.
