Artists feature marine-focused works ASTORIA — Astoria Visual Arts will host artist workshops and talks on Saturday. The events will be held in conjunction with the 2020 FisherPoets Gathering. From noon to 2 p.m., artist Shelby Silver will lead an art workshop where attendees will create and decorate buoys. Buoys and marine debris will be provided. At 3:30 p.m., artist Duncan Berry will share a demonstration and history of Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese folk art of taking impressions directly from fi sh and other creatures. Berry will also read “Thanks Be To The Sea,” a poem about the interdependence of humans and the ocean. Afterward, an artist reception will be held until 5 p.m. Silver uses plastic marine debris of all shapes and sizes to create her artwork. With each piece, she aims to showcase a “deep value and appreciation of this earth.” Her exhibit “Ecological Rehabilitation Through Art,” is on display at Astoria Visual Arts through March 7. Berry is a co-founder of the company Fishpeople, and an acting co-organizer of the Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve effort. His creative work also includes poetry Duncan Berry’s ‘Devil Fish.’ and photography. His work is on exhibit at Astoria Visual Arts through March 7. All events will be held at Astoria Visual Arts, 1000 Duane St. in Astoria. The center is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Artist Duncan Berry.
