CrosswordAnswers Paleontologist to discuss historic Oregon extraction SEASIDE — The Friends of the Seaside Library will host paleontologist David Tay- lor at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Taylor will discuss an excavation of Cape Blanco that occurred in 1987. During the project, Taylor worked with staff to retrieve a 500,000 year old whale specimen. The whale measured to be about 70 feet long and is the largest fossil ever found in Oregon. Taylor’s staff retrieved 20 pieces of the whale’s vertebrae, as well as parts of its rib cage. The extracted specimen is considered extremely rare. Taylor is a professor at Portland State University. He teaches courses on geology and earth sciences. Philosophy talks to focus on slavery, racism ASTORIA — The monthly Philosofari- an’s Wit & Wisdom philosophy talk will be held as a two-day event on Wednesday and Thursday. At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, the group will show the 2016 remake of “Birth of A Nation,” a fi lm which explores the Virgin- ia-based slave rebellion led by Nat Turner in 1831. The fi lm will be used as a discussion topic the following evening. At 7 p.m. on Thursday, the group will dis- cuss the topics of slavery, religion and free- dom. Discussion will be led by Clatsop Com- munity College instructor Seth Tichenor and Ron Craig, executive director and founder of the Astoria International Film Festival. Tichenor and Craig will talk about slavery and racism’s effects in the United States both historically and in present day. Admission to both events is free.
