16 // COASTWEEKEND.COM Fundraiser for Lummi Nation ASTORIA — A fund- raiser for the Lummi Nation’s annual tribal canoe journey is scheduled for the July 7 Astoria Sunday Market. The event will feature a raffle, native drumming and chanting. Top prizes are an adventure package for two with a zipline tour, a $50 gift certificate to Baked Alaska and a one-night stay in a local vacation rental studio. Other prizes include T-shirts, tea towels and drink coasters featuring tra- ditional tribal motifs like whales, ravens and bears. All proceeds will bene- fit Paddle to Lummi 2019, a gathering of tribes July 24-28 from up and down the Pacific Coast. They will arrive by canoe on the shores of the Lummi reservation near Bellingham, Wash., for feasts and other traditional celebrations. The Lummi will furnish 150,000 free meals to guests; showers, bathrooms and other facili- ties for more than 100 canoe families and create spaces and activities for elders, youth and families. The fundraiser is spon- sored by Astoria’s Pacific Unitarian Universalist Fel- lowship, which is joining with other West Coast con- gregations to honor the Pacific Northwest’s deep connections with native people. CANNON BEACH — Tickets for the annual Cot- tage Tour Sept. 13-15 are now on sale. The Cottage Tour is a weekend-long series of events includ- ing live music, wine tast- ing, tea tasting and tours of vintage homes. Tickets can be purchased at cbhis- tory.org or by calling 503- 436-9301. The event is an annual fundraiser for the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum. Tickets are $20 for a jazz concert featuring Dmi- tri Matheny on Friday, Sept. 13. At noon on Satur- day, Sept. 14, The Orego- nian’s Janet Eastman will present a lecture at Tolo- vana Hall on how homes and cottages on the coast have changed over the years. The lunch is catered by Dough Dough Bakery. Tickets to the lunch and lecture are $30. Tours of the homes takes place in the presi- dential streets of Cannon Beach from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. There will be wine from Cannon Beach Wine Shack, live music and tea from Beach House Teas at the featured homes. Julie Amici gives a concert at 6 p.m. Satur- day at the Cannon Beach Museum and History Cen- ter. Tickets to the concert and tour are $40. An English garden style tea and lecture caps off the weekend at Tolo- vana Hall on Sunday, Sept. 15. English style tea from Beach House Teas will be served with real tea cups and saucers. Master Gar- dener Jennifer Bell will give a presentation on how to plant indigenous plants. The lunch is catered by Dough Dough Bakery. Tickets are $25. These events do sell out. The cost to participate is $35 and includes one glass of wine or other beverage. Participants can register by emailing their first and last name to explorehauntedastoria@ gmail.com. The workshop is limited to 20 participants. Acceptance and instructions for paying the fee will be sent to participants as they register. The goal of the workshop, led by Kate Deeks, is to help writers prepare their short- story submission for Haunted Astoria’s Short Story Writing Contest. “Tarot cards can be powerful tools to har- ness the creative, guiding power of your sub- conscious,” Deeks said. The Haunted Astoria Short Story Writ- ing Contest theme for 2019 is Underground Astoria. This workshop will have both explanation and exploration of tarot, card decks to inspire, one writing prompt activity and a chance for sharing results. Participants receive a $5 discount to the Astoria Underground tours led by Jeff Daley and a free pass to Clatsop County Historical Society Museum, Flavel House and Oregon Film Museum. Short story submissions are due Oct. 6 and should not exceed 1,200 words. Haunted Astoria is a weekend of activities happening Oct. 25 –27. There is a $10 fee to enter the contest and cash prizes of $125 for first place, $85 for second place and $50 for third place will be awarded. Short story submissions will be read by actors from Astor Street Opry Company at a writer’s showcase on Friday, Oct. 25. Winners of the contest will also be announced then.
