“One of our consultants
brought it to my attention
… fi ve years ago that this
is an up-and-coming thing,”
Dave Larson said of adven-
ture parks.
The Larsons, who also
run a construction company,
opened High Life Adven-
tures in 2012 in the family’s
bowl-shaped property cen-
tered around a lake near Fort
Clatsop. Over time, they
built up the zip line course, a
beach, swimming areas and
a full-service restaurant.
At the Warrenton prop-
erty, the Larsons have a
small sawmill supplying
about 50,000 board feet of
timber from Astoria For-
est Products to construct the
central tower in Seaside.
The resort has built a
strong reputation in the tour-
ism industry and is part of
the itinerary of many visit-
ing cruise ships. High Life
Adventures was recently
ranked the most fan-favor-
ite destination in Oregon
by MEDIAmerica, publish-
ers of the magazine Ore-
gon Business, ahead of other
local attractions like the
Columbia River Maritime
Museum.

handcuffed, in effect, by
these potential restrictions of
height and mass, ” he said.
The owner of a state
offi ce building in the Urban
Core section that houses
key services like the Ore-
gon E mployment D epart-
ment and the D epartment of
H uman Services had hoped
to expand the building’s foot-
print to continue providing
services in Astoria.
“The state’s expansion
needs cannot be met under
the proposed new code lan-
guage recommended by the
Planning Commission,” an
attorney representing Marine
Street LLC wrote in a letter to
the City Council in February.
Steve Fick, who owns a
building at the base of Fourth
Street in the Urban Core area,
has urged for fl exibility in the
codes along the riverfront.
The amendments to
Bridge Vista represent a “tak-
ings” from property owners,
he said.
Fick foresees a situation
where a property owner can’t
make the changes necessary
to keep a building or prop-
erty profi table and then can’t
sell it because of the city’s
restrictions .
“If the city wants to
change it so bad, buy the
damn thing,” he said. “Then
you can mow it down, do
whatever you want with it.
Those are options.”
But, he added, “to ask
people to always just lose
your value because some-
body else doesn’t like it, I just
fundamentally don’t think
that’s necessarily right when
you’ve been responsible
stewards of the properties.”
