NOVEMBER 1, 2018 // 17 Leap into the holiday season with ‘Nutcracker’ ASTORIA — The Little Ballet Theatre’s “Nutcracker” will be staged at the Astoria High School Auditorium with two performances on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and one performance on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. A cast of 80 dancers, a 55-piece orchestra conducted by Cory Pedersen and a 12-voice choir fuel this com- munity treasure that starts the holiday season. The production has soldiers battling with the King Mouse and his army of mice, a Kingdom of Snow, a fairy tale castle, where many performers charm young Clara as she visits the Kingdom of Sweets, topped by a grande pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Tickets are available online through the Liberty Theatre website and at the Liberty Box Office in Asto- ria. General admission tickets are available at Maddox Dance Studio in Warrenton, and at the Astoria High School Auditorium one hour before each performance. Call the Little Ballet Theatre at 503-861-1971 for more information. ASTORIA — A contra dance will be held at the Astoria Arts and Movement Center the evening of Friday, Nov. 2. The event starts at 7 p.m. with a beginner’s lesson taught by Dave Ambrose. Admission is $5 to $10; chil- dren under 12 are admitted free. You’ll be dancing to live music played by the Clatsop County Stringband. Contra dancing is for people with no experience and those who win dance competi- tions. The dance style dates back to the 1600s in England and Scotland, becoming pop- ular in France in the 1700s ASTORIA — Clatsop Com- munity College Foundation presents “Her, Her, and Him” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Liberty Theatre in Astoria. This afternoon of opera, art songs and musical theater by Fellini, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Richard Strauss and more will feature performances by Deac Guidi and Dr. Claire Hudkins ‘Nutcracker’ by Noel Thomas. The nature photo-show will be accompanied by 70 minutes of solo piano music written by Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi and per- formed by jazz pianist David Robinson, lead pastor at the church. with accompanist Dr. Susan Buehler. This performance is free and open to the public. Stu- dents of all ages are encour- aged to attend. Donations to the Clatsop Community College Foundation are welcome. Guidi is a teacher and performer who lives on the North Coast. Hudkins, soprano, is an enthusiastic teacher of voice and piano and performs regularly as a soloist in the Pacific Northwest. Buehler, a Cannon Beach resident, is a professor emer- itus from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, where she was a member of the voice faculty for 25 years. CANNON BEACH — The sec- ond annual Steinway Piano Concert Series at Cannon Beach Community Church continues with “White Clouds,” a collaborative piano and photography con- cert, 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, during Cannon Beach’s Stormy Weather Arts Fes- tival. This event, held at Cannon Beach Community Church, 132 E. Washington St., is open to the public. Tickets are $10 at the door the day of the show. All proceeds benefit the Cannon Beach Food Pantry.
