Columbia River tempera-
tures over 68 degrees Fahren-
heit. Climate change is mak-
ing that hard to achieve as
the river soars even above 70
degrees for days at a time.
Snake River steelhead
fishermen in Idaho have paid
a high price with seasons
already shortened because
of diminished runs, and then
in 2017 cut even shorter as
returns collapsed, coming
in even below fish manag-
ers’ low projections, forcing
emergency closures.
The ruling comes as the
governor’s task force on orca
recovery is working on rec-
ommendations to help rebuild
the critically endangered pop-
ulation of southern resident
killer whales, which depend
primarily on Chinook for
food. Orca advocates have
joined forces with dam-re-
moval advocates pushing
to breach the Lower Snake
River Dams to improve Chi-
nook runs.
The dams affect Chinook
and steelhead in multiple
ways, by slowing the current
into miles-long lakes, cre-
ating habitat that predators
have thrived in and in which
temperatures climb. Billions
of dollars have been spent to
alter the dams to improve fish
passage with success; how-
ever, each dam still takes its
toll, and the fish runs are not
on track for recovery, partic-
ularly wild fish, the ecolog-
ical mainstay for long-term
recovery.

action,” Shields said. “The

for the lives of the orca, and
to honor the memories of J50
and Tahlequah, two whales
that died this summer. “The
story of the southern resi-
dents will go down in his-
tory,” she said. “What will be

The Mega Millions jackpot
is now up to $900 million.
Lottery
officials
raised the estimated prize
Wednesday, less than a day
after another drawing with-
out a winner increased the
prize to $868 million.
Officials say no tickets
matched all six numbers
to claim the Mega Millions
prize Tuesday night. The
numbers were 3, 45, 49, 61,
69 and Mega Ball 9.
The next drawing will
be Friday. The estimated
jackpot for that drawing
would be the second-larg-
est lottery prize in U.S.
history.
The largest lottery jack-
pot was a $1.6 billion Pow-
erball prize won in January
2016.
The jackpot has been
growing since July, when
some California office
workers won $543 million.
The odds of winning the
jackpot aren’t good, at one
in 302.5 million.
Mega Millions is played
in 44 states — includ-
ing Oregon — along with
Washington, D.C., and the
U.S. Virgin Islands.
