A pet boarding and groom- ing business in Warren- ton answered. Bay Breeze Boarding and Grooming donated $2,000 and is chal- lenging local businesses to match the contribution or contribute what they can. “I think the food bank is a vital link to many families in this community for having proper nutrition and meals,” said Brandy Gregg, general manager for Bay Breeze. She and owner Liz McKer- ren came up with the idea to challenge other Warrenton businesses for support. “We’re a small business,” Gregg said. She hopes other, larger businesses will see the need for the pantry, too. “Hopefully we can get them a couple years of operating money and also cover some of the expenses that they need help with.” The Warrenton Food Pan- try is a partner organization with the larger regional food bank, and it is the only pan- try providing food to people in the Warrenton and Ham- mond area on a weekly basis. Dusten Martin, chief opera- tions officer for the regional food bank, has been in touch with church leaders about the pantry’s financial woes. Martin is glad to hear the pantry is on better footing than it was in July. “It sounds like (Guien- don) is getting some support and has some leads on hope- fully some more support in the future,” Martin said. “We’re always poised to jump in whenever we have to,” he added. “That is always a mechanism that is there should the community need us. … Right now we’re here to help support the church in any way we can.” Continued from Page 1A with Greater Oregon Behav- ioral Health Inc. “What we want to do is really foster a culture of recovery and a cul- ture of progress.” The project is also a “double win” in that it provides addi- tional housing along with a rep- licable model for rural areas, said Kate Allen, a community development specialist. “Four units at a time or six units at a time are much more achievable,” Allen said. Tenants will be women who have recently completed a treatment program. They typ- ically will spend six months to two years at the complex as they continue to work toward independence, Wheeler said. “They won’t be brand new in recovery,” Wheeler said. “They will have already been done with treatment, and they’ll be on the road to recovery for the long haul.” Women will work with peer mentors and have other services provided by Clatsop Behav- ioral Healthcare, the county’s mental health contractor. Their children will have access to early learning services. One of the first projects in her new position at the mental health organi- zation was identifying afford- able housing opportunities for those recovering from sub- stance abuse. She eventually came in contact with the county, which had recently donated a house in Alderbrook to a non- profit housing organization to fix and sell, with revenue going toward future projects. The move signaled a new tac- tic as the county grapples with low-income housing woes. Like the Alderbrook prop- erty, the Agate Street fourplex was derelict with garbage and deferred maintenance but rife with potential. At the Decem- ber meeting, county commis- sioners passed the property on to the behavioral health organization. “That was a miracle and a nice miracle at that,” Wheeler said. “I was really grateful to the county for having the vision to do that.” In addition to the more than $350,000 from Oregon Hous- ing and Community Services, the behavioral health organi- zation and local fundraising, the Northwest Oregon Hous- ing Authority agreed to offer vouchers to help residents. “I think the connec- tion GOBHI has with CBH is ideal,” Allen said. “With NOHA in the picture, the operational side is very solid.” The remodel of the centu- ry-old building — headed by contractor Randy Stemper — began in July and is expected to be finished by December. You have to start somewhere.” Scott Lee, the chairman of the county commission and the housing authority board, said the project is a good example of organizations working together to solve the county’s housing shortage. “I’m encouraged by this, and I think these are the kind of creative ideas where we can come together and carve out niches and funding sources,” Lee said. “A lot of times we tend to be siloed, and the more we can collaborate, the stronger we can become.” Bridge: Waterfront plans waiting on state Continued from Page 1A is prohibited from doing so, Moore said. On Monday, Moore and Estes asked the City Coun- cil to approve a change order for bridge repair work in case the full replacement project doesn’t go forward this year. The city planned to pay Columbia Dockworks $42,025 for repair work on the Eighth and 10th street bridges and the trolley tres- tle. At the time, other repairs to the rest of the bridges were not deemed necessary since the entire structures were going to be replaced.
