JUNE 14, 2018 // 21 COURTESY U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY A boat faces rough waters Cross the Columbia and Tillamook bars safely ILWACO, WASH. — This fishing season, plan to attend a class covering the valuable skills and knowledge nec- essary when crossing the ocean bars here. On Saturday, June 16, the Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a class from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Ilwaco Timberland Library, 151 First Ave. N., Ilwaco. Are you ready and prepared to cross the Columbia or Tillamook Bars during this fishing season? The waves, wind and currents are hazardous for vessels of all sizes. Conditions can change from calm to life-threatening in as little as five minutes. Sign up for this class and learn ways to boat more safely and un- derstand some of the challenges in navigating these ocean bars. Topics include seaworthy vessels, dangers and dangerous areas, reading NOAA tides and currents, tide table charts, how to use nautical charts, un- derstanding weather service forecasts and bar reports, safety equipment for offshore or potentially rough waters, boating in strong waves, distress calls, equipment and protocols. Bring your questions and leave more informed! Be safe this summer! The $10 cost includes class materials and useful websites. Space is limited. Community invited to Picnic at the Barn SEASIDE — Pack a picnic and join supporters of North Coast Land Conservancy at Circle Creek Conserva- tion Center in Seaside on Saturday, June 16, for the third annual Summer Picnic at the Barn. It’s an opportunity to spend time with friends, take a guided tour of the trails and enjoy this large con- served property at the foot of Tillamook Head a few days before the summer solstice. There is no admission fee; everyone is welcome. Guided walks on the trails at Circle Creek will begin at 3 p.m. Bring chairs or a blanket to relax on the lawn outside the big barn and listen to live music beginning at 5 p.m., while a silent auction with lodging, wine, fine art and other offerings is held inside the barn. (In case of rain, pic- nicking will happen inside the barn.) Bring a pie or other dessert for the dessert table. The picnic will wrap up around 7 p.m. Circle Creek Conser- vation Center is at the end of Rippet Road in Seaside; Yachts of fun! ASTORIA — Astoria Yacht Club will again be hosting Downtown Rallies on alter- nate Thursdays this summer. The next rally will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 21. Meet at the AYC club room upstairs in the Chinook building overlooking the Port of Astoria West Moor- ing Basin at 300 Industry St. Skippers will be on hand to provide sailing opportuni- ties to the public, depending on space availability. All boats, power or sail, are wel- come to come enjoy these beautiful summer evenings and views of Astoria from the river with the yacht club. Dress warmly and bring a life preserver if you have one. Boats get underway at 6 p.m. and, though no course is set by the rally committee, boats generally cruise up- stream of the Astoria Bridge, depending on wind and tide conditions. Boats and crew return to the clubroom by 8 p.m. for conversation, awards and light refresh- ments.
