Military members get free admission to
Heritage Museum through Labor Day
ILWACO, WASH. — The
Columbia Pacific Heritage
Museum is participating in
the ninth annual Blue Star
Museums — a collabora-
tion among the National
Endowment for the Arts,
Blue Star Families, the U.S.
Department of Defense and
more than 2,000 museums
across the country — to
offer free admission to the
nation’s active duty military
personnel and their families
through Labor Day, Sept. 3.
This year’s participat-
ing museums represent
not just fine arts museums,
but also science museums,
history museums, zoos,
nature centers and children’s
museums. Museums are
welcome to sign up for Blue
Star Museums throughout
the summer by emailing
bluestarmuseums@arts.gov.
The free-admission
program is available for
people currently serving
in the U.S. military: Army,
Navy, Air Force, Marine
Corps and Coast Guard,
as well as Active Duty
and Reservists, National

The 26-foot Monomoy, located in the Columbia Pacific Heritage
Museum’s Resource Gallery, is one type of surfboat used by the
U.S. Life Saving Service at both Cape Disappointment and Ilwa-
co Beach stations. These sturdy boats were rowed through the
surf to rescue seamen and others in distress along the beach.
Guardsman (regardless of
status), U.S. Public Health
Commissioned Corps,
NOAA Commissioned
Corps and up to five family
members. Qualified mem-
bers must show a Geneva
Convention common access
card (CAC), DD Form 1173
ID card (dependent ID) or
a DD Form 1173-1 ID card
for entrance into a partici-
pating Blue Star Museum.

starmuseums.

‘River rat’ gets his own exhibition
ASTORIA — The Columbia
River Maritime Museum
presents a new exhibit in
the Marine Art Gallery:
“Rolf Klep: Artist, Author,
Museum Founder.”
Before he poured his
energy and passion into
founding the Maritime
Museum, Klep enjoyed a
successful career as a com-
mercial artist and illustrator.
His works appeared promi-
nently in many of the most
popular magazines (News-
week, Colliers, Life, Look,
Women’s Home Compan-
ion, among many others)
during his productive period
of 1927 to ’56.
The museum’s new ex-
hibit will feature examples
of these, as well as his work
as an author and illustrator
of published books.
Born in Portland, Klep
was a self-proclaimed “river
rat” who early on became
fascinated by ships, boats
and water. The family
moved to Astoria when
Klep was 9. By 14, he got
his first summer job as a
deck hand on the Tourist
No. 1 Ferry.
