Black oystercatcher survey training May 4 ASTORIA — The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a class covering the skills and knowledge necessary for crossing the bar Satur- day, May 12, at Englund Marine & Industrial Supply, 95 Hamburg Ave., in their conference room. Attendees can choose the 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. class or the 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. class. Are you prepared to cross the Columbia Bar, known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific,” this fishing season? Sign up for this class and learn ways to boat more safely when crossing the Columbia and Tillamook bars. Topics include seaworthy vessels, dangers and danger- ous areas, reading NOAA tides and currents, tide table charts and how to use nautical charts, understand- ing weather service fore- casts and bar reports, safety CANNON BEACH — Beach and bird lovers mark your calendar! In early May, a handful of local groups will host an opportunity to learn and get involved in research around the iconic black oyster- catcher. Along with commu- nity partners, The Audubon Society of Portland coordi- nates this great program to help everyone learn more about this beloved coastal bird every year. Join the Audubon Society of Portland, in partnership with the Haystack Rock Awareness Program, Friends of Cape Falcon Marine Reserve, Oregon Marine Reserve Partnership, U.S. Geologic Survey and U.S. Fish and Wildlife for training on black oystercatcher moni- toring. Black oystercatchers are an iconic, easily recog- nizable bird of the coast. It is also a species of conser- vation concern because of its small population size and vulnerability to habitat impacts. If you would like to learn more about this amazing bird and are interested in helping with Audubon Portland’s com- munity science effort to monitor oystercatchers on the coast, consider attend- ing this training. The training will cover the black oystercatcher’s life history, conservation challenges and instructions on how to participate in our abundance and nest monitoring program.
