On Thursday, May 3, the college celebrates Dr. Julie Brown’s recent Fulbright Scholar trip to Scotland, where she studied and compared Astoria’s mari- time culture with that of the Scottish Highlands and Is- lands. Her presentation will share pictures and stories comparing the two coastal cultures. Doors open with food and beverage service at 6 p.m. Seasonal beers are on tap, food and other bev- erages are available for purchase, but no purchase is required. Minors are welcome. The Fort George Lovell Showroom is located at Duane and 14th streets. “The men went out in twos and fours to fish in wooden boats — weather permitting, they hauled their catch to the shore where women waiting in canneries butchered, cleaned and preserved the silver darlings.” Sound familiar? Brown visited the Scottish High- lands from March 5 through 23 as a Fulbright Specialist Scholar hosted by the Uni- versity of the Highlands and Islands Centre for History in Dornoch. She visited universities, museums and public schools, giving talks on Chinook Indians, maritime crime in Astoria, Scandinavian immigrants, labor on the Columbia River, the Lady Washington and Astoria’s beloved Fish- erPoets Gathering. Brown teaches a variety of classes at CCC, including courses in maritime culture and literature of the sea. Get your garden off to a quick, healthy start this season. Always a favor- ite with local gardeners, the Lower Nehalem Community Trust’s annual plant sale at Alder Creek Farm is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28. The event raises funds for the community gar- den in its effort to grow, learn and share with the community. The garden is a program of the Low- er Nehalem Community Trust, which aims to preserve land and nurture conservation values in the Nehalem region. The Trust’s annual vegetable plant sale has everything you need to start your veggie garden. Plan to arrive early for the best selection of favorites, like tomatoes, broccoli, squash, lettuce, basil, herbs and flowers. All plant varieties are selected to thrive in our cool coastal gardens. Come see what we have to offer for your home landscape. Native plants do more than please the eye, they attract pollinators to your garden, are perfectly adapted to withstand our climate and increase diver- sity of birds and insects. The Trust’s communi- ty garden program grows food for the Food Bank, Senior Center and commu- nity garden members. Now beginning the 13th growing season, the program is en- couraging new community members to join — those who want to learn how to garden and share in the bounty with fellow garden- ers.
