2A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2017 Former crewman sues skipper from ‘Deadliest Catch’ show Associated Press PORTLAND — A for- mer seaman has sued a fisher- man who starred in Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove” show, alleg- ing the man was negligent and caused severe injury. Nolan Dean filed a suit Dec. 6 in federal court against Gary Ripka, nicknamed “The Ripper,” who appeared in the first episode of “Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove” in Sep- tember 2016. Dean claims his arm was bro- ken because Ripka was negli- gent and his ship wasn’t seawor- thy, The Oregonian reported. Dean was working in the back of Ripka’s ship, West- ern Breeze, on May 30, 2015, when Ripka activated a hydraulic control, the com- plaint states. Dean’s arm got caught in a line, and he was hoisted over the deck. Multi- ple bones broke in his arm. Ripka declined to talk about the specifics of the case, but said he has a history of safe fishing expeditions. “Our operation has a rep- utation for being safe. Our crew members know that,” Ripka said. “Guys have no problem coming on our boat because they know it’s safe.” Donna (Layton) Clark Portland Feb. 7, 1946 — Dec. 11, 2017 After a short illness, Donna Clark passed away on Dec. 11.
