2A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2017 Astoria graduate featured in Promise of Oregon video Roger Guy Welty Salem Sept. 20, 1949 — Nov. 3, 2017 Roger Guy Welty passed away on Nov. 3, and, being lovingly invested in his children’s lives, served as an assistant scoutmaster and Cub 2017, at Salem Hospital in Salem, Oregon. He was born to Roger Raymond and Jane Scout pack leader. Giving guidance and support Welty in Iowa City, Iowa, on Sept. 20, 1949, when he could, it was his greatest desire that his children learn the meaning of strength, the oldest of four children. The Daily Astorian A senior who graduated from Astoria High School in June was featured in a new short documentary by The Promise of Oregon, a campaign by the Oregon School Boards Association to improve the state’s flagging graduation rates. The documentary, “Grad- uation is Victory,” follows students from the Class of 2017 as they prepare for grad- uation and talk about chal- lenges they have overcome. Maryann Mandujano from Astoria was featured, along with students from Eugene, Portland and Eagle Point. The state posted a 75 percent graduation rate for the Class of 2016, one of the lowest in the country. Statewide grad- uation rates for the Class of 2017 will be released in late January. William Aarnio Mary Louise (Paetow) Hale Astoria Oct. 8, 1941 — Nov. 5, 2017 William Aarnio, 76, passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, after suffering a fall. William was born Oct. 8, 1941, to Sherman and Mary Hartman, and later adopted by Walter Aarnio of Svensen, Oregon. William is survived by his wife of 45 years, Della Aarnio; daughters Judi Caceros (Roger) and Tammi Benthin (Don); and sons Eric Aar- nio (Anita) and Jeffrey Aarnio Everett, Washington June 2, 1941 — Nov. 1, 2017 (Tonia). He had 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. William worked at the Wauna Mill for nearly 24 years before retiring. William was an avid motor- cycle rider, and had many friends in the United Motorcycle Club International.
