3A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2017 Food bank: ‘90 percent of my volunteers are not coming back’ Continued from Page 1A mismanagement. It c ould jeopardize Thanksgiving and holiday meals and leave thou- sands of dollars in Christmas gifts undelivered, she said. Late Friday, South County Food Bank board members released a statement that the food bank would close for two weeks for an “internal restructuring.” “With the consistent growth in the number of peo- ple we are serving on a daily basis, we really need to make sure we have the infrastructure in place to continue to feed everyone who comes through the doors,” board president Darren Gooch said. Gooch said the closure pro- vides an opportunity to focus on “future sustainability.” The food bank, located at 2041 N. Roosevelt Drive , is a private nonprofi t serving the hungry in Seaside. It survives on contributions from individ- uals, organizations, founda- tions, businesses and cities. Board member Alan Evans said the food bank will work to guarantee no break in ser- vices. There will be changes to some management and volun- teers, as well as paperwork and internal policies . “We have realized that the need for our services becomes more important daily as more people fi nd themselves in need,” Evans said. “With that increase in need becomes a bigger responsibility for us to be sustainable. We realize that stronger policies are needed to be enforced to our manage- ment, volunteers and the foun- dation of our services to our partnering agencies and the people we serve.” Board members said any delivery changes would be for the purpose of better service. Regional food banks will supplement private food dona- R.J. Marx/The Daily Astorian The South County Food Bank. tions, Evans said. Food dona- tions will be accepted during the restructuring. Board members will also take the time during the clo- sure to clean, organize and deal with inventory. ‘Totally devastated’ The South County Food Bank was launched with dona- tions from a Seaside grocery in 1981 and incorporated as a nonprofi t in 1986. It is associ- ated with Clatsop Community Action and an affi liate of the Oregon Food Bank Network. It was housed in a location in a building provided by the Moose Club for 28 years, until the Moose Club disbanded in 2013. Gann, who is unsalaried, took over as the food pantry’s managing director in 2013, replacing Norm McLaren. From 390 to 470 families use the food bank each month . Gann said changes in the board, including departures of key members, changed its composition. “It’s all a big month, about 100 who need to walk for their food “are going to suffer” because they can’t get to food banks in Gearhart or Cannon Beach, Gann said. “Food is rotting in the fridges because they did this,” she said. Regular donation pickups from North Coast Family Fel- lowship in Seaside — yielding 1,000 pounds of food a month — will be interrupted, she said. Gann does not expect most of the 60 volunteers to return after the food bank’s reopen- ing, she said. “My people are up in arms and 90 percent of my volunteers are not coming back,” she said. “I’m totally devastated. This is the busiest time of the month and there will be a week-and-a-half peo- ple will go hungry. I am so sorry for these people. I am so upset.” The food bank is scheduled to reopen Nov. 7. clique of friends now,” she said. Gann, who said she’d worked 70 to 80 hours a week at the food bank, clashed over a request by board members to provide personal information on food bank patrons. The board cut Christ- mas and Thanksgiving din- ner boxes because of the belief that patrons were “double-dip- ping and getting stuff every- where,” Gann said. “We’ve got a room in the back of my offi ce of Christ- mas presents for kids people already sent in, and they’re going to get rid of it all,” she said. An aisle offering patrons free shoes, clothing, blankets and cookware was also an issue . “They’re getting rid of all that stuff,” she said. ‘Rotting in the fridges’ Of the 240 people to lose service at the food bank this McClure: Much of his job involves teaching students how to access information Continued from Page 1A at the University of North Car- olina in Greensboro. McClure started his career at the Greens- boro Public Library before working at the university. In 2005, he and Noelle moved back to the Pacifi c Northwest, where he held positions at the Fort Vancou- ver Regional Library, Lewis and Clark College’s National Crime Victim Law Institute, law fi rm Miller Nash and the Art Institute of Portland. McClure then spent eight years as the director of library services at the Pacifi c Northwest College of Art before his wife was recruited to Seattle for a job at billion- aire Paul Allen’s Vulcan Inc. He found work at Vulcan and later as an adjunct librarian at Olympic College in Bremer- ton, Washington, but felt underemployed as a seasoned library director. Like so many other people who have moved to the North Coast, McClure remembers visiting as a child and fall- ing in love with the natural beauty, history and architec- ture. He and his wife had a tradition over the past decade of visiting the North Coast each year for his birthday in the dead of winter, wishing they could move. The college had lost its previous library direc- tor and was looking for a replacement at the same time McClure was looking for a better position. After talking it over with Noelle, the two decided to make the move with their two cats and chickens. McClure checks out books, but much of his job involves teaching students how to access information. He oversees seven employees and maintains the library’s paper and digital collections and website while helping develop curriculum and pol- icies. A big focus is help- ing students scrutinize the sources of information they use, especially online. “It’s not always apparent to college students and other people, information consum- ers, where information comes from and why it is produced. Really scrutinizing the pur- pose for the production of information may help people understand the cultural biases and agendas of the informa- tion itself.” A fi lm noir buff, McClure is planning fi lm nights at the library, along with a technol- ogy-free longhand writing club called Freewriters. He is getting to know other local librarians who partner with the college , each with different specialties, such as the college’s art literature collection provided through a New York nonprofi t help- ing underfunded communi- ties. McClure is also trying to advertise the $20 annual pass residents can use at the college . A Celebration of Life For Steve and Kelly Gottesman W A NTED Saturday, October 28 th 2 pm to 8-ish...
