Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., a former Army helicopter pilot who lost her legs and partial use of her right arm during the Iraq war, called Trump’s announcement discriminatory. “When my Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in Iraq, I didn’t care if the American troops risking their lives to help save me were gay, straight, transgender or anything else,” she said. “All that mattered was they didn’t leave me behind.” Duckworth said if a person’s willing to risk their life as a member of the armed forces “and you can do the job, you should be able to serve — no matter your gender identity, sexual orientation or race.” Rep. Steve Russell, R-Okla., said Trump’s decision is understandable given the mounting concern among members of Congress over the amount of money the Pentagon is required to spend on gender transition surger- ies and hormone therapy. Russell, a retired Army officer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said service members undergoing these medical procedures often aren’t ready to deploy. State fair to open without rides after deadly malfunction COLUMBUS, Ohio — A state fair, where one person was killed and seven others were injured when an “aggressive thrill” ride broke apart, will be open today, officials said, but the rides won’t be running until they all are determined to be safe. Dramatic video captured by a bystander Wednesday eve- ning at the Ohio State Fair shows the Fire Ball ride swing- ing back and forth like a pendulum and spinning in the air when it crashes into something and part of the ride flies off. Screams are heard as passengers are thrown to the ground. “The fair is about the best things in life, and tonight with this accident it becomes a terrible, terrible tragedy,” said Republican Gov. John Kasich. Officials said the man who was killed was one of several people who were thrown to the ground when the ride mal- functioned. They have not released his name. Three of the injured remained in critical condition late Wednesday. Officials did not know what caused the ride to break apart, saying the investigation was ongoing. In US first, Oregon scientists edit genes of human embryos For the first time in the United States, scientists have edited the genes of human embryos, a controversial step toward someday helping babies avoid inherited diseases. According to MIT Technology Review, the experiment was just an exercise in science — the embryos were not allowed to develop for more than a few days and were never intended to be implanted into a womb. The publication first reported the news on Wednesday. Officials at Oregon Health & Science University con- firmed that the work took place there and said results would be published in a journal soon. It is thought to be the first such work in the U.S.; previous experiments like this have been reported from China. The Oregon scientists reportedly used a technique called CRISPR, which allows specific sections of DNA to be altered or replaced. It’s much more precise than some types of gene therapy that cannot ensure that desired changes will take place exactly where and as intended. With gene edit- ing, the changes are permanent and would be passed down to any offspring. The approach holds great potential to avoid many genetic diseases, but has raised fears of “designer babies” if done for less lofty reasons, such as producing desirable traits. Earlier this year, the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine said in a report that altering the genes of embryos might be OK if done under strict crite- ria and aimed at preventing serious disease. And last year, Britain said some of its scientists could edit embryo genes to better understand human development. receiving a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University in criminal jus- tice. And there’s been more than couple where we’re fly- ing down the road with lights and sirens, trying to get to the other end of the peninsula as quickly as possible because there’s an emergency situa- tion. It’s a big mix. Have you had any oppor- tunities to just mingle with the public so far? A little bit. What’s hap- pened more than a cou- ple times is I’ll be talking to someone — usually for better, but sometimes for worse — and whatever business were going over they’ll stop and go, ‘wait a minute, are you Ryley Queener?’ ‘Yeah …’ ‘We played football together!’ ‘What?!’ Oh, this town’s too small. I had wondered if you’d encountered that yet. There’s been few. In fact, while recently patrolling through Ocean Park, Queener spotted a young man he’d been looking for. He pulled his vehicle up and motioned for the man to come over. Queener politely told him he had papers to serve the man and to swing by the sher- iff’s office the next day to pick them up. Then, almost like a magic trick, he reached into the side pocket of his driver door and pulled out a wallet. “This is you right?” Queener asked. What has been your favorite thing about the job so far? That’s a tough one. There’s a lot. I’d say my favorite part was Fourth of July week- end because we had so much coverage. It’s always a busy time, so it’s all hands on deck. You’re not doing anything that week because everyone’s getting all kinds of overtime hours. So if there were calls where normally one person would handle, three people would show up. It was like, “Wow, this is nice. We’re busy, but you’re never alone.” I was thinking this was the perfect situation for me, being new. I’ll be going to call after call after call, but there will be enough people with me that I’m going to be able to relax and learn how to handle the call. Now I get that same kind of call, and that’s not going to be a problem. What kind of situation has been the most stressful? The very first call was just taking a theft report. It was nothing but a conversation. But you have to remember everything, and that’s what I was worried about. But then when I was through it I was like, ‘That wasn’t so bad.’ It’s nothing that I wasn’t prepared for. It was just actually going out there and doing it. What are you looking for when out patrolling? You know, oftentimes, I don’t have to look too hard — stuff finds me. Especially right now, we’re so busy in the summer. So right now I don’t worry so much about looking for stuff. In the fall and winter when our call vol- ume is less, that’s when it’s a lot different. After the residents chose to wait to file a formal complaint, Queener wished them well and headed back to his patrol. “If all my calls were as simple as that, it’d be great. There was a time just a few weeks ago where my head would be spinning, but now I’m a lot more comfortable,” he said. Queener said he has already wondered how it is that he’s the peacemaker between people who are often at least twice his age, but digressed, “If that’s what’s needed, so be it.” He noted that he likes the fact that a big part of the job is in a lot of ways just hang- ing out and talking to people. “That’s one thing that I’ve noticed, a lot of this job is just being myself, doing my thing,” he said. Queener is currently shar- ing a house in Naselle with good friend and fellow new Deputy Dustin Eaton. They will soon be joined in the department by another friend, Nick Zimmerman, who is fin- ishing up at the academy now. “Me and Dustin would meet him at the gym after work and tell him all the fun stuff we’d done on our shifts, and he was like, ‘Yeah, I’ve got to apply.’ And he got picked up,” explained Queener.
