Trump’s transgender troops ban
divides veterans in Congress
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s
decision to ban transgender service in the armed forces
drove a wedge through military veterans in Congress, with
one camp standing squarely behind the commander in chief
and the other decrying his order as an ugly attack on dedi-
cated troops.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., a former Army
helicopter pilot who lost her legs and partial use of her right
arm during the Iraq war, called Trump’s announcement
discriminatory.
“When my Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in
Iraq, I didn’t care if the American troops risking their lives
to help save me were gay, straight, transgender or anything
else,” she said. “All that mattered was they didn’t leave me
behind.”
Duckworth said if a person’s willing to risk their life as
a member of the armed forces “and you can do the job, you
should be able to serve — no matter your gender identity,
sexual orientation or race.”
Rep. Steve Russell, R-Okla., said Trump’s decision
is understandable given the mounting concern among
members of Congress over the amount of money the
Pentagon is required to spend on gender transition surger-
ies and hormone therapy. Russell, a retired Army officer
who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said service members
undergoing these medical procedures often aren’t ready to
deploy.
State fair to open without
rides after deadly malfunction
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A state fair, where one person was
killed and seven others were injured when an “aggressive
thrill” ride broke apart, will be open today, officials said, but
the rides won’t be running until they all are determined to
be safe.
Dramatic video captured by a bystander Wednesday eve-
ning at the Ohio State Fair shows the Fire Ball ride swing-
ing back and forth like a pendulum and spinning in the air
when it crashes into something and part of the ride flies off.
Screams are heard as passengers are thrown to the ground.
“The fair is about the best things in life, and tonight with
this accident it becomes a terrible, terrible tragedy,” said
Republican Gov. John Kasich.
Officials said the man who was killed was one of several
people who were thrown to the ground when the ride mal-
functioned. They have not released his name. Three of the
injured remained in critical condition late Wednesday.
Officials did not know what caused the ride to break
apart, saying the investigation was ongoing.
In US first, Oregon scientists
edit genes of human embryos
For the first time in the United States, scientists have
edited the genes of human embryos, a controversial step
toward someday helping babies avoid inherited diseases.
According to MIT Technology Review, the experiment
was just an exercise in science — the embryos were not
allowed to develop for more than a few days and were never
intended to be implanted into a womb. The publication first
reported the news on Wednesday.
Officials at Oregon Health & Science University con-
firmed that the work took place there and said results would
be published in a journal soon. It is thought to be the first
such work in the U.S.; previous experiments like this have
been reported from China.
The Oregon scientists reportedly used a technique called
CRISPR, which allows specific sections of DNA to be
altered or replaced. It’s much more precise than some types
of gene therapy that cannot ensure that desired changes will
take place exactly where and as intended. With gene edit-
ing, the changes are permanent and would be passed down
to any offspring.
The approach holds great potential to avoid many genetic
diseases, but has raised fears of “designer babies” if done for
less lofty reasons, such as producing desirable traits.
Earlier this year, the National Academy of Sciences and
National Academy of Medicine said in a report that altering
the genes of embryos might be OK if done under strict crite-
ria and aimed at preventing serious disease.
And last year, Britain said some of its scientists
could edit embryo genes to better understand human
development.
receiving a bachelor’s degree
from Eastern Washington
University in criminal jus-
tice. He was quickly hired by
the Naselle Youth Camp as
an overnight security guard.
During the day, he was free
to help coach middle and high
school football.
It wasn’t long before
he was hired by the Pacific
County Sheriff’s Department
and sent to the police acad-
emy in Burien. He graduated
from the academy on May 24,
the next day he worked his
first shift in a patrol vehicle
What is an average day
like for you right now?
My shift is usually noon to
8. And the way it works for us
is, if we’re in our car, we’re
at work. So my commute is
walking from my front door
to my driveway. I usually
take my time to drive through
Naselle. It’s at the edge of
south county. And it’s home.
I like driving around there.
Then I make my way through
Chinook, and then the penin-
sula where work usually finds
me.
What have you been
doing a lot of so far?
There’s been everything.
Every day is different. Some
days are busier than others.
Some days are super slow,
like today, but I’ve still got
time. There’s everything
imaginable. Smaller calls that
can be satisfied with a phone
call. And there’s been more
than couple where we’re fly-
ing down the road with lights
and sirens, trying to get to the
other end of the peninsula as
quickly as possible because
there’s an emergency situa-
tion. It’s a big mix.
Have you had any oppor-
tunities to just mingle with
the public so far?
A little bit. What’s hap-
pened more than a cou-
ple times is I’ll be talking to
someone — usually for better,
but sometimes for worse —
and whatever business were
going over they’ll stop and
go, ‘wait a minute, are you
Ryley Queener?’ ‘Yeah …’
‘We played football together!’
‘What?!’ Oh, this town’s too
small.
I had wondered if you’d
encountered that yet.
There’s been few.
In fact, while recently
patrolling through Ocean
Park, Queener spotted a young
man he’d been looking for.
He pulled his vehicle up and
motioned for the man to come
over. Queener politely told
him he had papers to serve the
man and to swing by the sher-
iff’s office the next day to pick
them up. Then, almost like a
magic trick, he reached into
the side pocket of his driver
door and pulled out a wallet.
“This is you right?”
Queener asked.
The man looked it over in
astonishment.
“It was found on the beach
on Fourth of July,” he tells

him.
“I wasn’t even on the
beach on Fourth of July!” the
man replied.
What has been your
favorite thing about the job
so far?
That’s a tough one. There’s
a lot. I’d say my favorite part
was Fourth of July week-
end because we had so much
coverage. It’s always a busy
time, so it’s all hands on deck.
You’re not doing anything
that week because everyone’s
getting all kinds of overtime
hours. So if there were calls
where normally one person
would handle, three people
would show up. It was like,
“Wow, this is nice. We’re
busy, but you’re never alone.”
I was thinking this was the
perfect situation for me, being
new. I’ll be going to call after
call after call, but there will be
enough people with me that
I’m going to be able to relax
and learn how to handle the
call. Now I get that same kind
of call, and that’s not going to
be a problem.
What kind of situation
has been the most stressful?
The very first call was just
taking a theft report. It was
nothing but a conversation.
But you have to remember
everything, and that’s what I
was worried about. But then
when I was through it I was
like, ‘That wasn’t so bad.’ It’s
nothing that I wasn’t prepared
for. It was just actually going
out there and doing it.
What are you looking for
when out patrolling?
You know, oftentimes, I
don’t have to look too hard
— stuff finds me. Especially
right now, we’re so busy in
the summer. So right now I
don’t worry so much about
looking for stuff. In the fall
and winter when our call vol-
ume is less, that’s when it’s a
lot different.
Working with people
Responding to a harass-
ment call in Ocean Park, dep-
uty Queener arrived at a home
with a yard sale set out in
front of the house. As the ten-
ants detailed their situation —
they explained that someone
in their neighborhood was
removing or damaging their
yard sale and “no trespass-
ing” signs — Queener stood

I’ve almost always been pleased with my
experiences at Leinassar. Everyone treats
me with respect and usually explains
everything that’s being done, especially “Dr.
Jeff .” Th e offi ce uses the latest techniques
and technology, making my dental care
the most comfortable it’s ever been. A big
positive about this offi ce is the view
of the river that I enjoy during my
dental visits. I do recommend this
dental practice.

and listened, taking down a
few notes and only interrupt-
ing them to ask clarifying
questions. After the residents
chose to wait to file a formal
complaint, Queener wished
them well and headed back to
his patrol.
“If all my calls were as
simple as that, it’d be great.
There was a time just a few
weeks ago where my head
would be spinning, but now
I’m a lot more comfortable,”
he said.
Queener said he has
already wondered how it
is that he’s the peacemaker
between people who are often
at least twice his age, but
digressed, “If that’s what’s
needed, so be it.”
He noted that he likes the
fact that a big part of the job
is in a lot of ways just hang-
ing out and talking to people.
“That’s one thing that I’ve
noticed, a lot of this job is
just being myself, doing my
thing,” he said.
Queener is currently shar-
ing a house in Naselle with
good friend and fellow new
Deputy Dustin Eaton. They
will soon be joined in the
department by another friend,
Nick Zimmerman, who is fin-
ishing up at the academy
now.
“Me and Dustin would
meet him at the gym after
work and tell him all the
fun stuff we’d done on our
shifts, and he was like, ‘Yeah,
I’ve got to apply.’ And he
got picked up,” explained
Queener.
To have three new depu-
ties, who grew up in the same
small town, went to the same
school and played on the
same football team is a pretty
rare thing.
“Yeah, but I’m so happy
about it,” said Queener.
“Because
the
academy
sucked, but at least I was there
with one of my best friends.”
