5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, JULY 17, 2017 WORLD IN BRIEF The defendant had pleaded “not guilty,” saying he opened fire because he feared the base was coming under attack. As he was led out of the courtroom, 1st Sgt. Marik al-Tu- wayha said: “I have all the respect for the king, but I was doing my job.” The parents of one of the slain U.S. soldiers and the father and sister of another sat quietly as the judge announced his ruling to a crowded courtroom. The three U.S. Army Green Berets were killed Nov. 4, as their convoy waited at the gate to the base. Jordan initially said the Americans triggered the shooting by disobeying entry rules, a claim that was later withdrawn. Associated Press Hearing is believing: Speech may be a clue to mental decline Your speech may, um, help reveal if you’re uh … developing thinking problems. More pauses, filler words and other verbal changes might be an early sign of mental decline, which can lead to Alzheimer’s disease, a study suggests. Researchers had people describe a picture they were shown in taped sessions two years apart. Those with early-stage mild cog- nitive impairment slid much faster on certain verbal skills than those who didn’t develop thinking problems. “What we’ve discovered here is there are aspects of language that are affected earlier than we thought,” before or at the same time that memory problems emerge, said one study leader, Ster- ling Johnson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This was the largest study ever done of speech analysis for this purpose, and if more testing confirms its value, it might offer a simple, cheap way to help screen people for very early signs of mental decline. Don’t panic: Lots of people say “um” and have trouble quickly recalling names as they age, and that doesn’t mean trouble is on the way. Some killed in flash flood were part of extended family TONTO NATIONAL FOREST, Ariz. — Some of the nine people who died in a flash flood at a swimming hole in cen- tral Arizona were members of an extended family, said author- ities who resumed the search today for one person who remains missing. Officials had previously said the last missing person was a 13-year-old boy, but have since realized that his body was recov- ered Sunday. They say the missing person is a 27-year-old man and attributed the error to miscommunications due to having such a large number of victims. The victims were swept away by a torrent of water Satur- day while at a swimming hole in the Tonto National Forest near Payson, about 100 miles northeast of Phoenix. The flood was the result of a thunderstorm that dumped heavy rainfall just upstream. The storm unleashed 6-foot-high floodwaters, dark with ash from a summer wildfire. While authorities haven’t released the names of those who died, they gave more detail on the relationship between them. “It was an extended family — brothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, a grandmother,” said Detective David Hornung of the Gila County Sheriff’s Office. It’s unclear how many of the victims were part of the extended family. About 40 volunteer workers and four search dogs were search- ing for the missing man in debris piles near the swimming hole. Portland International Airport eyes possible improvements PORTLAND — Authorities want a $1.3 billion upgrade at Portland International Airport that will take five years to complete. Port of Portland Executive Director Curtis Robinhold tells the Oregonian that the improvements are needed due to more travel- ers and the increased security put in place following the 9/11 ter- rorist attacks. But the plan will have to be approved by airlines that operate at the airport and will pay for the work. Port of Portland officials have been working with the airlines on a plan before a vote on the project this fall. One of the objectives would be to improve the flow of crowds in the terminal by limiting the mixing of arriving and departing passengers. About 18 million travelers went through the airport last year. If approved, construction would begin in 2020. Maduro foes: Over 7 million vote in Venezuelan referendum CARACAS, Venezuela — Foes of President Nicolas Maduro said more than 7 million Venezuelans cast symbolic votes reject- ing his plan to retool the constitution in a strong but not over- whelming showing that left the opposition facing tough choices two weeks before the socialist leader seeks to reshape the polit- ical system. The vote was marred by violence when a 61-year-old woman was killed and four people wounded by gunfire after government supporters on motorcycles swarmed an opposition polling site in a church in western Caracas. Analysts said the 7,186,170 ballots the opposition says were cast across Venezuela and around the world on Sunday was an US-Syrian woman sets up model school in al-Qaida-run region AP Photo/Ralph Freso Members of the Tonto Rim Search and Rescue team exit a section of forest after searching along the banks of the East Verde River for victims of a flash flood, Sunday in Payson, Ariz. Search and rescue crews, including 40 people on foot and others in a helicopter, have recovered bodies of children and adults, some as far as two miles down the river after Saturday’s flash flooding poured over a popular swimming area inside the Tonto National Forest in central Arizona. impressive show of support. However, it fell short of the oppo- sition’s 7.7 million-vote showing in 2015 legislative elections and the 7.5 million votes that brought Maduro to power in 2013. Opposition leaders said that was because it was only able to set up 2,000 polling places in a symbolic exercise the government labeled as illegitimate. Still, some supporters said they were disappointed. “I thought it was going to be more,” said Mariela Arana, a 56-year-old school counselor. “But these seven million people spoke and it was plenty.” Flynn returns to hometown, surfing in respite from scandal MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — Former national security adviser Michael Flynn, at the center of multiple probes into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, seeks sanctu- ary from the swirling eddy of news coverage in the beach town where he grew up surfing and skateboarding, one of nine siblings crammed into a 1,200-square foot house. Middletown is his refuge and the ocean is his therapy, and he’s spent recent weeks here surfing and figuring out his path forward, according to friends and family members. They say the man they have known since his childhood here in the 1960s and 1970s — the student body president who rose from a start in Army ROTC to the rank of lieutenant general — isn’t the same man they see portrayed in news reports. “Have you seen that in the news? They talk about Mike as a traitor? The thought of that is absolutely insane to me,” said older brother Jack. Forced from government service into retirement in 2014 by the Obama administration, Flynn went on to set up a company that accepted speaking fees from Russian entities and later did consulting work for a Turkish-owned business. He joined the Trump campaign and then the administration, but the Trump White House ousted him after saying he mischaracterized con- versations with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. A wide range of his actions — including foreign contracts and payments, and whether he lied to officials — are under scrutiny by investigators. Thomas A. Heaney Jr., a retired Army colonel who has known Flynn since they were 9 years old, said Flynn has been doing well and has begun work again as a consultant after shutting down his old firm. ISTANBUL — Running a school in the enclave controlled by Syria’s al-Qaida affiliate, Syrian-American Rania Kisar has become skilled in getting her way, either by negotiating with the militants or by pushing back against them. When she was preparing for the students’ graduation, the mil- itant group sent an inspector who told her not to play music at the ceremony. She argued back. Then on graduation day, she invited the group. The ceremony started with a nod to tradition with a Quranic recital in line with the inspector’s wishes. But then as the stu- dents filed out in front of an audience of relatives and local offi- cials, as well as representatives from the militant group, Kisar played “Pomp and Circumstance” — the anthem used at Ameri- can graduations. It was a calculated gamble: she was betting the militants would not make a scene. “It was matter-of-fact. They did nothing,” she said. But she knew why they had intervened in the first place. “If they don’t interfere, they won’t be considered powerful,” she said. Oscar-winning actor Martin Landau dies at 89 LOS ANGELES — Martin Landau, the chameleon-like actor who gained fame as the crafty master of disguise in the 1960s TV show “Mission: Impossible,” then capped a long and versa- tile career with an Oscar for his poignant portrayal of aging hor- ror movie star Bela Lugosi in 1994’s “Ed Wood,” has died. He was 89. Landau died Saturday of unexpected complications during a short stay at UCLA Medical Center, his publicist Dick Guttman said. “Mission: Impossible,” which also starred Landau’s wife, Barbara Bain, became an immediate hit upon its debut in 1966. It remained on the air until 1973, but Landau and Bain left at the end of the show’s third season amid a financial dispute with the producers. They starred in the British-made sci-fi series “Space: 1999” from 1975 to 1977. Landau might have been a superstar but for a role he didn’t play — the pointy-eared starship Enterprise science officer, Mr. Spock. “Star Trek” creator Gene Rodenberry had offered him the half-Vulcan, half-human who attempts to rid his life of all emo- tion. Landau turned it down. “A character without emotions would have driven me crazy; I would have had to be lobotomized,” he explained in 2001. Instead, he chose “Mission: Impossible,” and Leonard Nimoy went on to everlasting fame as Spock. clatsop care FU N D R A I S E R SUGGESTED DONATION $5 Jordanian soldier convicted in killing of three American troops AMMAN, Jordan — A military court convicted a Jordanian soldier today in the shooting deaths of three U.S. military train- ers at a Jordanian air base and sentenced him to life in prison with hard labor.
