More pauses, filler words and other verbal changes might be an early sign of mental decline, which can lead to Alzheimer’s disease, a study suggests. Researchers had people describe a picture they were shown in taped sessions two years apart. Those with early-stage mild cog- nitive impairment slid much faster on certain verbal skills than those who didn’t develop thinking problems. “What we’ve discovered here is there are aspects of language that are affected earlier than we thought,” before or at the same time that memory problems emerge, said one study leader, Ster- ling Johnson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This was the largest study ever done of speech analysis for this purpose, and if more testing confirms its value, it might offer a simple, cheap way to help screen people for very early signs of mental decline. Some killed in flash flood were part of extended family TONTO NATIONAL FOREST, Ariz. — Some of the nine people who died in a flash flood at a swimming hole in cen- tral Arizona were members of an extended family, said author- ities who resumed the search today for one person who remains missing. Officials had previously said the last missing person was a 13-year-old boy, but have since realized that his body was recov- ered Sunday. They say the missing person is a 27-year-old man and attributed the error to miscommunications due to having such a large number of victims. The victims were swept away by a torrent of water Satur- day while at a swimming hole in the Tonto National Forest near Payson, about 100 miles northeast of Phoenix. The flood was the result of a thunderstorm that dumped heavy rainfall just upstream. The storm unleashed 6-foot-high floodwaters, dark with ash from a summer wildfire. While authorities haven’t released the names of those who died, they gave more detail on the relationship between them. “It was an extended family — brothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, a grandmother,” said Detective David Hornung of the Gila County Sheriff’s Office. It’s unclear how many of the victims were part of the extended family. About 40 volunteer workers and four search dogs were search- ing for the missing man in debris piles near the swimming hole. Portland International Airport eyes possible improvements PORTLAND — Authorities want a $1.3 billion upgrade at Portland International Airport that will take five years to complete. Port of Portland Executive Director Curtis Robinhold tells the Oregonian that the improvements are needed due to more travel- ers and the increased security put in place following the 9/11 ter- rorist attacks. But the plan will have to be approved by airlines that operate at the airport and will pay for the work. Port of Portland officials have been working with the airlines on a plan before a vote on the project this fall. One of the objectives would be to improve the flow of crowds in the terminal by limiting the mixing of arriving and departing passengers. About 18 million travelers went through the airport last year. If approved, construction would begin in 2020. Maduro foes: Over 7 million vote in Venezuelan referendum CARACAS, Venezuela — Foes of President Nicolas Maduro said more than 7 million Venezuelans cast symbolic votes reject- ing his plan to retool the constitution in a strong but not over- whelming showing that left the opposition facing tough choices two weeks before the socialist leader seeks to reshape the polit- ical system. Oscar-winning actor Martin Landau dies at 89 LOS ANGELES — Martin Landau, the chameleon-like actor who gained fame as the crafty master of disguise in the 1960s TV show “Mission: Impossible,” then capped a long and versa- tile career with an Oscar for his poignant portrayal of aging hor- ror movie star Bela Lugosi in 1994’s “Ed Wood,” has died. He was 89. Landau died Saturday of unexpected complications during a short stay at UCLA Medical Center, his publicist Dick Guttman said. “Mission: Impossible,” which also starred Landau’s wife, Barbara Bain, became an immediate hit upon its debut in 1966. It remained on the air until 1973, but Landau and Bain left at the end of the show’s third season amid a financial dispute with the producers. They starred in the British-made sci-fi series “Space: 1999” from 1975 to 1977. Landau might have been a superstar but for a role he didn’t play — the pointy-eared starship Enterprise science officer, Mr. Spock. “Star Trek” creator Gene Rodenberry had offered him the half-Vulcan, half-human who attempts to rid his life of all emo- tion. Landau turned it down. “A character without emotions would have driven me crazy; I would have had to be lobotomized,” he explained in 2001.
