Associated Press Kim vows North Korea’s nukes are not on negotiation table SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed today his nation will “demonstrate its mettle to the U.S.” and never put its weapons programs up for negotiations, a day after test-launching its first intercontinental ballistic missile. The hard line suggests more tests are being prepared as the country tries to perfect nuclear-armed missiles capable of striking anywhere in the United States. Tuesday’s ICBM launch, confirmed by U.S. and South Korean officials, is a milestone in North Korea’s efforts to develop long-range missiles with nuclear warheads. It isn’t there yet — some analysts suggest it will take several more years and many more tests to perfect such an arsenal — but a successful launch of an ICBM has long been seen as a red line after which it would only be a matter of time if North Korea isn’t stopped. Worry spread in Washington and at the United Nations, where the United States, Japan and South Korea requested an emergency U.N. Security Council session today. U.S. Sec- retary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed that the missile was an ICBM and said the U.S. response would include “stronger measures to hold the DPRK accountable,” using the acronym for the nation’s formal name, the Democratic People’s Repub- lic of Korea. The uproar only seemed to inspire North Korea, whose pro- paganda machine rarely fails to aggrandize its leader and its military or to thumb its nose at rivals Seoul and Washington. A report in its state media today described leader Kim as “feasting his eyes” on the ICBM, which was said to be capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead, before its launch. “With a broad smile on his face,” Kim urged his scientists to “fre- quently send big and small ‘gift packages’ to the Yankees,” it said, an apparent reference to continuing the stream of nuclear and missile tests Kim has ordered since taking power in late 2011. Trump looks for friendlier European welcome in Poland WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is headed back to Europe hoping to receive a friendly welcome in Poland despite lingering skepticism across the continent over his commitment to NATO, his past praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his decision to pull the U.S. out of a major climate agreement. Trump arrives in Warsaw, Poland, today for a brief visit that will include a speech in Krasinski Square, near the site of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis. He’ll also meet with the leaders of Poland and Croatia and hold a joint news conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda. Before moving on to an international summit in Ger- many, the president will also hold meetings with the leaders of a dozen countries located between the Baltic, Adriatic and Black seas at a summit of the Three Seas Initiative, which aims to expand and modernize energy and trade. One of the initiative’s goals is to make the region less dependent on Rus- sian energy. “Even if he doesn’t mention Putin or Russia outright, just stepping foot in Poland sends a powerful statement,” said Jim Carafano, a foreign policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. “Europe is working for energy inde- pendence — looking for free market solutions — and Poland is in the middle of that energy corridor, so it makes so much sense that the president would go there and talk about energy policy.” At the same time, Trump will have to balance his visit to Europe with escalating tensions with North Korea, after the U.S. concluded Tuesday that North Korea had test-launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile. The U.S., South Korea and Japan responded to the provocation by requesting an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council, sched- uled this afternoon. They look small enough to tuck into the gleaming blue flight hel- mets their fathers hold under their free arms. All six mothers and fathers knew each other before the pregnancies. If they weren’t all close friends, they were at least in the same friend group. For the women, the pregnancies brought them closer together, said new mother Erin Cooley. For the men, the immi- nent arrival of a pack of babies made for a busy five months at the air station. Pilots and pregnancy Air Station Astoria usually has about 17 pilots, includ- ing officers. When six of those pilots found out they were going to be fathers last year, some for the first time, the scheduling headaches began. The air station is staffed in such a way that the pilots are able to cover for each other, but only to a point. May, June and July is a busy time at the station. This is transfer season, a time when many members of the Coast Guard are changing bases. Familiar faces leave, new faces arrive. This year, it felt like trans- fer season started early. Being away from family also takes a toll, say three of the women whose newborns were part of the air station baby boom. “The things I grew up with, I’d love for my kids to expe- rience,” said Sarah Murphy. “But, they’re also having this whole other new experience being out here.” It was something Caroline Wright, a dance instructor at Maddox Dance Studio, says she hadn’t factored in when she gave birth to her son this spring. “We always planned to have children, but I never planned to have children in these circumstances,” she said. “It’s a very emotional pro- cess, you know,” she added. “When you leave the house, you’re a family of two and when you come back your entire life has changed. Now there are three of you.” Erin Cooley and her hus- band chose to spend the first two weeks after son Calvin’s birth alone with him — no family, no friends. “We just wanted that time to adjust on our own,” Cooley said. Wright and Cooley worked before their sons arrived; Wright was back at work soon after. Cooley, an academic psychologist, plans to continue working when summer break ends. By the time August hits, her husband, Lt. Cmdr. Jim Cooley, will be at home more, taking time off regular duty to pursue a master’s degree online. They have talked about how they will juggle differ- ent roles, taking turns at being Calvin’s at-home parent, so that each can invest in their career. Up until Calvin’s birth, Cooley commuted nearly every other week from the West Coast to her East Coast tenure-track job at The City University of New York. “I can’t opt out of my career for several years and just step back in again and be at the same place,” Cooley said. Challenges Three-month-old James is Murphy’s second child. She also has a 2 1/2-year-old daughter. Everything, she said, is simultaneously easier and more difficult with two, She hasn’t had a full night’s sleep in a very long time. But lack of sleep for her is one thing, she said. It’s a different kind of equation to manage, but so are many things in a Coast Guard family. Take the relatively simple question of finding a babysit- ter. If you are never in any one community long, how do you build those local con- nections that help you find a trustworthy, regular babysit- ter? Before the babies came, the six women pooled together to help babysit for the women like Murphy who already had children. Now, all have infants on their hands. Still, the women — more through text and phone calls than face-to-face meetings these days — have talked about meeting up, taking turns watching each others’ babies. And in Coast Guard com- munities, word-of-mouth rec- ommendations for all sorts of things abound. Murphy expects one of the women will eventually find that trust- worthy babysitter at some point — likely recommended to her by someone else. Then she’ll recommend that babysit- ter to the other five women. “I’d imagine it’s very lucra- tive to get in with the military families,” Murphy laughed.
