THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, MAY 9, 2017 SPORTS 11A Seagull boy golfers Lady Warriors: ‘We hit the ball hard’ in title contention Continued from Page 12A The Daily Astorian CORNELIUS — The Seaside boys golf team is in great shape after one round of play in the Special District 1 Regional Boys Golf Cham- pionships, which opened Monday at Forest Hills Golf Course in Cornelius. Seaside is fourth in the team standings, but just 13 strokes behind defend- ing state champion Crook County, and well within state-qualifying contention with one round remaining. Today’s second round will take place at Quail Val- ley Golf Course in Banks. Scappoose is the current team leader with a 312, fol- lowed by Valley Catholic (325), Crook County (343) and Seaside (356). The top three teams advance to the state tournament. Junior Jackson Kunde led the Gulls with an 84, after shooting a3-over par 38 on the front nine. Sophomore Samson Sibony shot a 42 on the back nine to finish at 89, while fellow sophomores Connor Merrell and Mason Shamion added a 91 and 92, respectively. Sophomore John Whittle rounded out the Seaside scoring with a 105. Crook County’s Mayson Tibbs shot an even-par 72 to lead the tournament, with Scappoose golfers Jake Gray (73) and Nathan Mapes (74) in the next two spots. Til- lamook’s Carter Lee was fourth with a 77 and four players are tied at 80. “We are sitting in great shape,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “We are a few strokes out, but we get to sleep in our own beds tonight, and Crook County is spending their second night in a motel. The guys are feel- ing confident and I look for- ward to giving it our best shot (today).” Astoria is in eighth in the team standings with a 400 on Day 1. Kirk Fausett paced the Fishermen Monday with a 93, followed by Brian Wilder (95), Taylor Palmberg (100), Dylan Altheide-Niel- son (112) and Trevor Altheide-Nielson (117). And catcher Landree Miethe celebrated with three hits, three steals and three runs scored, and also gunned down a base runner on a stolen base attempt. Eight different War- renton players had hits. “We hit the ball hard,” coach Miethe said. “The mid- dle of the lineup is just produc- ing over and over. They laid some bunts down when they needed to. Our base running was a little sketchy, and I want to fix that, because we can’t end games, because we’re not doing the right things on the bases. “Those three runs in the first inning was key,” she said. “We were able to get a little cushion.” For Landree, her daughter, Miethe said “it was an emo- tional day. She was excited, and she lives for moments like this. She’s kind of a gamer. She picked it up and wanted to win. I just hope she can bring that emotion to every game from here on out.” Meanwhile, when Blodgett wasn’t striking out batters (seven), she was fielding slow-rollers back to the circle, as she fielded seven grounders NBA Playoffs: Competition will get tougher Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian Niqui Blodgett delivers a pitch to the plate for the War- renton Warriors during a game Monday against Portland Adventist Academy. for seven outs, and also caught an infield pop-up for an eighth out. She was directly responsi- ble for 15 of the 21 outs. “She’s gotten better,” Miethe said of Blodgett. “She was actually struggling at the beginning of the season, when she averaged about six walks per game. But since then, she’s limited the amount and type of pitches she throws. Instead of throwing six different pitches, we limit her to three, told her to hit her spots, and she’s doing that.” In Warrenton’s three-run first inning, Miethe led off with an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on a sin- gle to right by Blodgett. Melia Kapua followed with a single to right, with an error allowing courtesy runner Lilly Thomas to score. One out later, Natalie Dun- can drove another single to right, scoring Kapua. The Cougars committed six errors in the field, three in the fourth inning. Blodgett had one rough inning, as she allowed two hits to start the bottom of the fourth, but came back with two strikeouts and fielded a grounder for the third out. Duncan finished with two hits, and Tyla Little had a dou- ble for Warrenton. A TTENTION A LL F AMILY , F RIENDS AND L OCAL B USINESSES The Daily Astorian is creating a graduation publication for our local high schools to honor and congratulate the Class 2017 of This will publish on each other. For the most part, they want to make the pass to somebody as opposed to mak- ing the shot. They get some sort of satisfaction out of it. “It doesn’t matter if Steph comes down, crosses half-court and launches it. At least we got a shot at the rim. We feel like most of those are going to go in at the end of the day, so we’re good with it.” The Warriors have been without coach Steve Kerr since Game 3 of the first round and haven’t missed a beat. He remains out after having a spi- nal cord leak procedure at Duke University on Friday, and there is no timetable for his return. He and Brown speak regu- larly, but that’s an obstacle to overcome. Jazz coach Quin Snyder raved about the culture Kerr has created. “They demonstrate it in everything that they do,” Sny- der said. “When a team kind of lives who they are, that is a unique group. They all believe in each other and they are will- ing to sacrifice for one another. “Just the unselfishness that that group plays with and the care they have for one another on the court. They’ve got each other’s backs.” So far, the Warriors have only been slowed during self-created lulls, like when the Jazz cut a 26-point sec- ond-quarter lead down to five before Golden State got back in gear. The competition will get tougher, though. In the con- ference finals, they’ll have to deal with either San Anto- nio’s Kawhi Leonard or Hous- ton’s James Harden, and both players are better than any the Warriors have seen so far this postseason. And then there’s LeBron James, likely waiting in the finals. “They’re a historically great team,” Jazz forward Gordon Hayward said. “They make you pay for mistakes.” Legal Notices Legal Notices Legal Notices Legal Notices Legal Notices AB6259 Knappa-Svensen-Burnside RFPD Notice of Budget Committee Meeting A public meeting of the Budget Committee of the Knappa- Svensen-Burnside RFPD, Clatsop County, State of Oregon, to discuss the Budget for fiscal year July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 will be held at the Knappa Fire Station, 43114 Hillcrest Loop, Knappa, Oregon. Published: May 2nd, 9th, and 16th, 2017 AB6296 Notice of Application and Pending Planning Department Decision The Seaside Planning Department has received the following request: 17-025V: A request by Tom Spitznagel for a variance to the minimum lot size allowing a minor partition (file 17-024MP) that will divide the property at 455 11th Avenue (6-10-16DA-TL16900) into two smaller parcels. The existing dwelling is located on the eastern portion of the property and it would remain on a parcel approximately 3,195 sq. ft. The applicant plans to build on the newly created vacant parcel to the west that would be approximately 3,794 sq. ft. The property is zoned high density residential (R-3) and the zone would permit attached townhomes on 3000 square foot parcels; however, the applicant's request would maintain detached single family dwellings more in keeping with the current development pattern in the area. The R-3 zone would allow three units and a building height of 45 ft. The applicant is proposing to further restrict future development to one unit on each parcel and limit the building height to 35 ft. 17-026V: A request by Stephen Gentner for a variance to the 15 ft. wetland setback in the rear yard of the existing dwelling at 2977 Sunset Blvd. (6-10-29DA-TL2900). The applicant plans to build a retaining wall and level a portion of the rear yard. Although a portion of the wall will encroach within the setback, an area that exceeds the setback will be protected in a portion of the rear yard that currently exhibits native riparian vegetation. The review will be conducted in accordance with Article 7 and Article 10 of the Seaside Zoning Ordinance, which establishes the review criteria and procedures for a variance. The subsequent land division must conform to the criteria in Sections 26-31 of the Seaside Subdivision & Land Partition Ordinance #74-36. A copy of the applications, applicable criteria, documents, and evidence relied upon by the applicants are available for review at no charge. These materials can be reviewed at the Community Development Department, 1387 Avenue U in Seaside. Copies of these materials will be provided at a reasonable cost. All interested persons are invited to submit written testimony in favor or in opposition to the request. Written testimony submitted by 9:00 a.m., Monday, May 29, 2017; will be considered by the Planning Director in rendering a decision on the application. Comments received after this date will not be considered. Comments may be delivered to the Community Development Department located at 1387 Avenue U or mailed to 989 Broadway, Seaside, Oregon 97138. Failure to raise an issue in writing, or failure to provide sufficient specificity to allow the Planning Director the opportunity to respond to the issue may preclude appeal to the Planning Commission based on that issue.
