The Astoria girls will send four swimmers to state, after Sunday wild- card entries were named. Christie qualified in the 50 free- style, as did the girls’ 200 freestyle relay team. “We did OK,” said Astoria coach Amy Emmett. “We had seven kids who had never swam before make it back for their second swims today. But we had kids swimming sick all year. It’s probably the worst winter I can remember for sickness. But for the most part, we toughed it out. “I’m pretty happy with where the kids are going to start the season next year. It’s going to be a lot better than where we started this year.” Loggers crush the ’Cats, 63-44 Loggers will likely host either Nestucca or Gaston in a league playoff this week. Three Knappa players — Kaitlyn Landwehr, Devin Van- dergriff and Madelynn Weaver — scored nine points each in the loss. Landwehr also had eight rebounds and four steals, while Weaver and Aiko Miller each had six rebounds. Juniors Jaykayla Jackson and Dakota Logan had nine points apiece for Nestucca. 70 Help Wanted that’s an awesome performance,” said first-year Seaside coach Shane Spell. “A lot of really great swims.” In addition to Garvin, “Bradley Rzewnicki had an excellent 200 IM and breaststroke (fourth in both),” he said. “The two boys’ relays have a chance as well (both qualified). For the girls, Kendy Lin swam a good 200 freestyle, and Maya McGill had a good, solid swim in the 500 free.” The lone individual state quali- fier for the Seaside girls was Lin, the sophomore whose 2:13.90 (nearly a four-second drop) in the 200 freestyle was good enough for second behind Newport’s Allison Bachart (2:03.38). The highest individual finish for Astoria was a third-place showing for senior Shannon Christie in the 50-yard freestyle (27.44). Christie also placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle The Daily Astorian CLOVERDALE — Knappa scored a must-win 63-44 victory Saturday night at Nestucca, as Dale Takalo and Colton Weirup combined for 39 points to lead the Loggers. The win over the Bobcats snapped a three-game Knappa losing streak, and moved the Loggers into second place in the Northwest League standings at 14-3, a half-game ahead of Life Christian and Vernonia (both 13-3). The Lady Gulls took a big step toward locking up the Cow- apa League title, with two games remaining. Seaside improves to 8-0 (15-2 overall), still a game ahead of Banks (7-1). Maddi Utti had four fouls after three quarters, but played the fourth and still finished with 20 points to lead all scorers. The Gulls made it tougher than it should have been, missing three straight free throws in the final 47 seconds, before Utti made 1-of-2 with nine seconds left. The Valiants were unable to score in the final minute. “(The Valiants) needed it badly, and we needed to keep our little margin, and to keep getting better at finishing tight games,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “Four quar- ters, make plays, poise. Emy Kiser again came off the bench in the first half and gave us a spark. Gretchen (Hoekstre) is playing better and bet- ter for us, Maddi and Syd (Villegas) just played great, though we didn’t shoot particularly well. A good, good win on the road. We’ll take it.” Valley Catholic’s only lead came in the first quarter, as the third of three 3-pointers by Noelle Man- nen had the Valiants in front, 12-10. Kiser answered with a 3-pointer, and the Gulls never trailed again. The Valiants still managed to rally from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter, tying the game early in the fourth, 40-40. Seaside responded with key baskets by Utti, Sydney Villegas and Lucy Bodner, pushing the lead to 46-42. Kate Nguyen drained a 3-pointer for the Valiants with 1:40 left, but those would be the final points for No. 7-ranked Valley Catholic, which falls to 4-4 in league. Utti had nine of Seaside’s 12 assists, with eight steals and six rebounds.
