10A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2017 CONTACT US FOLLOW US facebook.com/ DailyAstorianSports Gary Henley | Sports Reporter ghenley@dailyastorian.com Valiants defeat No. 1-ranked Seagulls The Daily Astorian BEAVERTON — The last of the state’s unbeaten teams went down to defeat Friday night at Valley Catholic. In a potential state championship matchup, the Valiants knocked off the previously undefeated, No. 1-ranked Seaside Gulls, 68-50, in a Cowapa League boys basketball showdown. Sporting a 17-0 record entering the game, the Gulls were unable to make their usual big scoring run, while the bigger, taller Valiants had their way for much of the game. Six-foot-3 senior Daniel Hardy scored 18 points, Jack Grassberger (6-5) had 13, with Colin Haggerty (6-3) and Andrew Plambeck (6-4) toss- ing in 10 points apiece for the Valiants. It was a huge victory for Valley Catholic, the only team with a chance at catching the Gulls in the league standings. And catch them they did, as the Valiants pulled into a first-place tie atop the Cowapa League. Both teams are now 7-1 in league play, with two games remaining. A pair of early 3-pointers from Chase Januik had Seaside in front, 10-8, but the Valiants answered with four 3-pointers the remainder of the first half, with inside points from Hardy, who had 12 of his 18 in the first half. The Gulls trimmed a 15-point half- time deficit down to nine (36-27) in the opening minute of the third quar- ter, on 3-pointers by Jackson Januik and Hunter Thompson. But the Valiants were able to squash any comeback hopes for the Gulls with a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, highlighted by a dunk by Hardy off a fast break. Thompson and Payton Westerholm both fouled out for Seaside, while Jackson Januik finished with a team- high 19 points for the Gulls. SPORTS IN BRIEF Tillamook tops Astoria The Daily Astorian TILLAMOOK — A fast start by the Tillamook boys basket- ball team resulted in a 76-36 victory over Astoria Friday, in a Cowapa League game at Tillamook. Tillamook’s Chuck Wagner scored eight points in the first quarter, which ended with the Cheesemakers holding a 29-9 lead. Astoria is gradually returning to full strength, as Fridtjof Frem- stad was playing in his second game, and Kyle Strange saw his first action of the year, following an injury in football, suffered at Tillamook. Ian Collett led the Cheesemak- ers with 15 points. The Fishermen return to action Tuesday, when Astoria hosts Banks.
