5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2016 WORLD IN BRIEF Associated Press Trump off to a strong start in Electoral College votes WASHINGTON — Donald Trump started racking up electoral votes today even as anti-Trump protesters across the country tried to persuade the Electoral College to prevent him from winning the White House. Trump didn’t lose any electors with votes counted in a half dozen states he won Nov. 8: Tennessee, West Virginia, Arkansas, South Carolina, Mississippi and Oklahoma. Initial results gave Trump 44 votes and Democrat Hillary Clin- ton, 10. It takes 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the presi- dency. Electors were voting throughout the day and there was scant evidence many GOP electors would peel away from their Election Day winner. More than three dozen would have to abandon him to complicate his path to the presidency. More than 200 demonstrators braved freezing temperatures at Pennsylvania’s capitol, chanting, “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!” and “No treason, no Trump!” Protesters also gathered in Colorado, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Nebraska and other states. The protesters, however, were unlikely to persuade the Electoral College to dump Trump. An Associated Press survey of electors found very little appetite to vote for alternative candidates. Only one Republican said he would vote for someone else. Trump aides: Democrats’ complaints are sour grapes WASHINGTON — Sour grapes. That’s how Donald Trump’s closest advisers see Democrats’ complaints that Moscow hacked their private emails this election season in a bid to sow discord among their supporters and sway the election toward Republicans. The pushback comes ahead of the Electoral College vote, which was expected to make official Trump’s election win and pave his way to take office on Jan. 20. “Let’s assume it’s true,” Reince Priebus, Trump’s incoming chief of staff, said Sunday of Russian interference in the election. “There’s no evidence that shows that the outcome of the election was changed because of a couple dozen John Podesta emails that were out there.” The number of leaked emails by Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s cam- paign manager, was actually closer to tens of thousands. And it’d be difficult to prove exactly what influenced voters. But Democrats said it was a personal attack and a threat to democracy. Gov-elect: North Carolina will repeal LGBT law on Tuesday RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina legislators will repeal the contentious HB2 law that limited protections for LGBT people and led to an economic backlash, the state’s incoming governor said today. Gov.-elect Roy Cooper made the surprising announcement just weeks before he takes office and shortly after the Charlotte City Council voted to repeal its own local nondiscrimination ordi- nance enacted in early 2016. It was that ordinance that Republicans blamed for the statewide law. “Senate Leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore assured me that as a result of Charlotte’s vote, a special session will be called for Tuesday to repeal HB2 in full. I hope they will keep their word to me and with the help of Democrats in the legislature, HB2 will be repealed in full,” the Democrat said in a statement. Outgoing Republican Gov. Pat McCrory, who narrowly lost the November election to Cooper, issued a statement saying he will call the special session but also accusing Democrats of using the issue for political gain. Repealing the law would be a remarkable sign of cooperation for the incoming governor and the GOP-controlled legislature. Just last week, lawmakers called a special session and stripped Cooper of some of his authority when he takes office next month. Buses resume taking remaining civilians, rebels from Aleppo BEIRUT — A fragile cease-fire was back on in Syria today, as buses resumed evacuating those still remaining in eastern Aleppo following days of delays and others departed with the sick and wounded from two rebel-besieged Shiite villages in the country’s north. At the United Nations, the Security Council was expected to vote within hours on a resolution seeking to deploy U.N. monitors to Aleppo immediately in order to prevent what France has warned could be “mass atrocities” by Syrian forces and allied pro-govern- ment militias as they assume control of all of the rebel enclave. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the pan-Arab Al-Mayadeen TV said that 10 buses left with civilians from the two Shiite villages long besieged by rebels — Foua and Kfarya — and were on their way to government-controlled areas today. According to the deal, more than 2,000 sick and wounded are supposed to leave the villages. The Observatory and the pan-Arab TV said 15 additional buses entered the two villages to bring out more people. The evacuations from the villages were added on as conditions to a Turkey- and Russia-brokered cease-fire deal that paved way for the last rebels and civilians to leave the remainder of the rebel enclave in the eastern half of Aleppo. China disputes US claim it is top source of synthetic drugs BEIJING — U.S. assertions that China is the top source of the synthetic opioids that have killed thousands of drug users in the U.S. and Canada are unsubstantiated, Chinese officials told the Associated Press. Both the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy point to China as the main source of fentanyl, fentanyl analogs and fentanyl precursors that end up in North America. Such statements “lack the support of sufficient numbers of actual, confirmed cases,” China’s National Narcotics Control Com- mission told DEA’s Beijing field office in a fax dated Friday. In its letter to the DEA, which the commission also sent to AP, Chinese officials urged the U.S. to provide more evidence about China’s role as a source country. It’s a point the state-run China Daily newspaper drove home publicly in an article this month stating that made-in-China carfent- anil was not the cause of overdose deaths in the U.S. Gunmen kill 10, including Canadian, in attacks on police KARAK, Jordan — Gunmen assaulted Jordanian police in a series of attacks Sunday, including at a Crusader castle popular with tourists, killing seven officers, two local civilians and a woman visiting from Canada, officials said. Several armed men barricaded themselves inside the castle for hours, hemmed in by special forces soldiers. At least 34 people, including two foreign nationals, were wounded in the day’s violence, which was one of the bloodiest attacks in Jordan in recent memory. Security officials announced late Sunday, several hours after reports of the first shooting, that the operation had ended and that four gunmen were killed. They said troops continued to search the area. Trial starts for confidante of impeached S. Korean president SEOUL, South Korea — The jailed confidante of impeached South Korean President Park Geun-hye denied on the first day of her trial today that she used her ties to Park to extort money from big companies. The hour-long hearing at the Seoul Central District Court was the first public appearance in weeks for the woman at the heart of a scandal that led to Park’s impeachment after millions took to streets in protests. Choi Soon-sil, Park’s friend of 40 years, wore white prison clothes and bowed deeply to the three judges before her lawyer, Lee Kyoung-jae, denied that Choi conspired with Park and her presiden- tial aide to pressure companies to donate tens of millions of dollars last year to foundations controlled by Choi. When directly asked by a judge about the extortion charges, she denied the charges. 1 Buy Get Buy Cremer: ‘I love working outside, even in the rain’ Continued from Page 1A family. I think that’s why I con- tinue it, just the love of it and wanting to continue to help people, to try and make peo- ple’s lives easier.” “Sometimes you have calls that aren’t all roses,” she added. Training Cremer has been the Can- non Beach Fire and Rescue safety officer for seven years. She oversees the scene at car accidents, fires or medical calls to ensure volunteers are wearing personal protective equipment and heads a safety committee, discussing poli- cies each month. Volunteer firefighters par- ticipate in regular Wednes- day trainings. “Sometimes the drills are really exciting,” Cremer said. Trainings might involve “burn to learns,” in which people donate their old homes or motor vehicles for the team of volunteers to burn for a period of time. These drills allow volunteers to gain experience with han- dling actual fires. “We might set up a smoke machine and a ‘body’ in there that we might have to find to keep us in touch with what could honestly happen in a real fire,” Cremer said. “We have mock motor vehicle accidents, and sometimes in the summer we have a mock rescue in the ocean where we deploy our Jet Skis.” Cremer holds certifica- tions in fire fighter II, appa- ratus operator, emergency medical responder and water rescue technician. Cannon Beach volunteer firefighters have access to courses that provide continued education, she said.
