7A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2016 WORLD IN BRIEF swallowing problems had left him dangerously underweight. Learning how to feed is the baby’s latest struggle as medical problems mount for him and many other infants born with small heads to mothers infected with the Zika virus in Brazil. “It hurts me to see him like this. I didn’t want this for him,” said Jose’s mother, Solange Ferreira, breaking into tears as she cradled her son. A year after a spike in the number of newborns with the defect known as microcephaly, doctors and researchers have seen many of the babies develop swallowing dificulties, epileptic seizures and vision and hearing problems. While more study is needed, Zika-caused microcephaly appears to be causing more severe problems in these infants than in patients born with small heads because of the other infections known to cause microcephaly, such as German measles and herpes. The problems are so particular that doctors are now calling the condi- tion congenital Zika syndrome. Associated Press Trump assails Ryan for ditching him, battles for GOP support WASHINGTON — Four weeks before Election Day, Don- ald Trump battled today to keep the Republican Party in line, leveling fresh criticism at GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan after Ryan effectively abandoned hopes of Trump winning the White House. The GOP nominee said — inaccurately — that every poll declared him the winner of the weekend’s second presidential debate against Democrat Hillary Clinton. Trump complained, however, that he was being held back by Ryan and other congres- sional Republicans who are stepping away from him in hopes of keeping their congressional majorities. “Despite winning the second debate in a landslide (every poll), it is hard to do well when Paul Ryan and others give zero support!” Trump tweeted. And then: “Our very weak and ineffective leader, Paul Ryan, had a bad conference call where his members went wild at his disloyalty.” That was a reference to a telephone conference call on Mon- day in which Ryan made his position clear. He got some pushback from Trump supporters, but other Republicans clearly agree with the speaker. Obama: US working with companies on Mars mission WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says the United States is partnering with commercial companies to build “new hab- itats” to try to send humans safely to Mars within two decades. Obama set a goal in 2010 to send humans to Mars by the 2030s. He says the next step is to “reach beyond the bounds of Earth’s orbit.” Obama says the U.S. is collaborating on missions that will help scientists understand how long humans can live “far from Earth.” He writes in an op-ed on CNN’s website that the ultimate goal is for humans eventually to stay on Mars “for an extended time.” Obama is not elaborating on what it will cost or how the U.S. will pay for it. But he says it will require years of patience, testing and education. Shawn L. Minter via AP Adamaged Samsung Galaxy Note 7 on a table in Rich- mond, Va., after it caught fire Sunday. Cruising past a mortuary, grocery and homes in a looded area of in Lumberton, they joined U.S. Marshals and water rescue teams from as far away as New York and New Jersey on Monday. They were focused on rescuing about 1,500 people who were trapped when the river unexpectedly rushed out of its banks, up their stair- ways and into buildings. The rescue teams were expected to be back at work across east- ern North Carolina today as the deluge rolled downstream toward the Atlantic Ocean. At least three rivers were forecast to reach record levels, some not cresting until Friday. The half-dozen men from the nearby town of Rayham spent about 10 hours Monday aboard their truck — usually used for ighting brush ires in this swampy, rural southeast corner of North Carolina. They ferried to safety the people in inlated din- ghies or bass boats who met the truck on the neighborhood’s main street. “We’ve got it nowhere near this bad,” said Jimmy Hunt Jr., son of the chief of the volunteer ire department in Rayham. SEOUL, South Korea — Samsung Electronics said today that it is discontinuing production of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones per- manently, a day after stopping global sales of the ill-fated devices. The South Korean company said in a regulatory iling that it decided to stop manufacturing Note 7s for the sake of consumer safety. Samsung is struggling to regain consumer trust after a irst round of recalls that prompted criticism both for the faulty devices and for the company’s handling of the problem. After the earlier recall, the company said it had identiied a man- ufacturing defect in the batteries of its top-of-the-line smartphone. It started shipping new Note 7 phones that were supposed to be safer. But reports that even the replacements were catching ire led Samsung to announce it was stopping sales of the devices. Lindstrom: ‘He went out knowing people cared’ the U.S. Navy, he started as the assistant baker at Danish Maid in 1974. The couple bought the Commercial Street shop from Dorothy and Howard Schoen in 1986 and operated it for nearly 30 years. “He did it all,” Jan Lind- strom said of her husband, who did all the baking and worked six days a week throughout his ownership. She said her husband was always a hard worker. “From the time I got together with him, he said that’s what makes a person,” she said. The shop closed a year ago after Lindstrom had a leg amputated. Friends and local businesses came together and raised more than $27,000 in a series of fundraisers to aid in his recovery. “The thing that comforts me is that he went out know- ing people care,” said local Rescuers again retrieving people from loods after Matthew With new problems, Samsung stops making Galaxy Note 7s • • • • Best Baby Costume Best Couples Costume Best Group Costume Best Homemade Costume Evening listings TUESDAY O CTOBER 11 A - Charter Astoria/ Seaside - L - Charter Long Beach 6:30 7 PM 7:30 8 PM 8:30 9 PM W INNER A NNOUNC S ED N OV . 9 TH 9:30 10 PM 10:30 11 PM 11:30 KATU News at 6 ABC World News Jeopardy!
