4A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2016 Hospice Volunteers Needed In the absence of a cure, care makes all the difference Scott Holmstedt/For The Daily Astorian Lewis and Clark Elementary students assembled to meet the Rip City team Monday. See video by Scott Holmstedt of the event at www.dailyastorian.com. Rip City comes to the coast City oficials, fans welcome Trail Blazers entourage Make a Difference By DAVE NELSON For The Daily Astorian Summer is over, foot- ball has started. NBA training camps begin in the next few weeks, followed by preseason. Fans in Astoria had a taste of the excitement with the new season approaching, as the Port- land Trail Blazers brought the fourth-annual Rip City Relay on Monday, where it kicked off at an assembly at Lewis and Clark School. Principal Brian Ploghoft, introduced a gymna- sium full of excited third- and fourth-graders to Todd Bosma, Blazers team director of game operations and events. Bosma got the kids even more ired up when he introduced mascot Blaze the Trail Cat, who ran in iring confetti at his audience. A few lucky students and administrators were selected to participate in a tricycle race, which starts at one end of the gym, winds through mini cones and back. Dave Nelson/For The Daily Astorian City and team officials watch from inside Astoria City Hall as the Rip City flag is raised. New television announcers Kevin Calabro (play-by-play) and Lamar Hurd (commenta- tor), cheered for each side. Meanwhile later in the after- noon to kick off the “Rip City Fair,” team oficials joined Astoria Councilors Zetty Nem- lowill and Cindy Price and other staff at City Hall, in rais- ing a Rip City lag. A $1,000 donation was given to the Asto- ria Parks, Recreation and Com- munity Foundation. “It’s a huge honor,” Nem- lowill said. “We met the sweet- est people that are broadcast- ers, dancers, ambassadors, the mascot — they’re all super cool. I love that they’re going to local schools, spreading a positive message.” At the fair, fans could visit various booths where they could buy team apparel, spin a wheel for Blazers swag and meet Miss Oregon Alexis Mather of Astoria. One of the attendees, Soot the Kitten, was introduced to Blaze the Trail Cat. Blaze appeared to be eating his new friend, but a source close to mascot said, “He was just cleaning the kitten.” “We love the Rip City Relay,” Bosma said. “It’s a great opportunity for us to get out and see some of those cities we don’t get a chance to see a whole lot.” The whole show moved to Broadway Middle School in Seaside Tuesday.
