Help clean up beaches Saturday Nutcracker auditions set for Saturday The Daily Astorian The 33rd annual SOLVE Beach & River- side Cleanup, presented by the Oregon Lottery, takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (times may very by site) Saturday. Volunteers of all ages are needed to help remove invasive plants, restore natural areas, and clean up hundreds of miles of beaches, rivers, parks and neighborhoods before fall rains wash litter and debris into storm drains and out to sea. More than 100 projects are available, 46 of which are beach cleanups along the coast, including the Columbia River, Peter Ire- dale beaches, and the Sun- set, Del Rey and Gearhart beach approaches. The auditions are being held at the Maddox Dance Studio, 389 S. Main Ave., and danc- ers must be accompanied by an adult. Girls should have their hair in a bun, wear black leotards, pink tights and ballet shoes, and not wear jewelry. Boys should arrive in black pants and a white T-shirt. Mandatory rehearsals for dancers selected start Oct. 1, and last for nine weeks. Cos- tumes are provided for the per- formances which will be Dec. 3 and 4 at the Astoria High School Auditorium. This local production of the full-length Nutcracker ballet is accompanied by a 50 piece symphony orchestra, conducted by Cory Pedersen.
